So, I went to see a Met HD Broadcast today and the tenor, Marcello Giordani was SOOOO adorable! During intermission, someone backstage interviewed him and he was just so fun to watch. He seemed so modest and down to earth.

And he was so nervous! It was really endearing that he didn't take success for granted. The opera we went to see was "Turandot". And in Turandot no one cares about the soprano, to be perfectly blunt. EVERYONE goes to hear the tenor sing this ONE aria. And if THAT aria isn't FANTASTIC, everyone's disappointed. And Marcello Giordani KNEW that everyone was just waiting for his big aria.

So, during the interview, he was complaining that Puccini should have put the aria in the beginning of the opera. That way it would have already been done and he wouldn't have to worry about it through the entire performance. Which he sang beautifully, by the way.

And then it came time for his BIG aria, "Nessun Dorma". And he did a pretty good job of it. A little shakey in the lower register, but that was only two notes. The rest of the aria is up high, and he sounded fantastic. The rise and fall of the phrases was so beautiful and sweeping. And that "Vincero" (the climax of the aria) was just stunning. The high B was great.

But what was just so ADORABLE was the way he looked after the aria. When everyone applauded like crazy, he just looked so relieved. But he also looked so tired. He kind of closed his eyes for a moment and looked like he was just trying to catch his breath. Because that's one HELL of an exhausting piece to sing. I felt bad that he had to go on singing right after the applause was over. Because after having sung the majority of the opera AND that song, I couldn't even begin to imagine how absolutely wiped he must have been.

I certainly don't envy him. If I were a tenor, I would be far, far too intimidated to take on that role.

But he was just so likable! Great acting, marvelous singing, and such a warm, friendly personality, too! Backstage I was watching the way he interacted with the soprano singing the role of Turandot, and they both looked so easy to be around. And so humble, too!

All the cast members I saw in interviews seemed so modest. And it seemed like the cast was just one big family.

And Marcello was so CUTE! I wanted to go give him a big hug. heart
