as you may know, Earthbound was an RPG for the SNES way back in 1995. i heard they might never bring it to VC because of copyright reasons (the most noticeable one being the "yellow submarine") but that doesn't mean i cant review it!

graphics: 9/10
the graphics look great in this game. in every battle, you get a cool background, and the bosses have there own background.
wahmbulance SPOILER ALERT! SPOILER ALERT! the final boss IS the background! wahmbulance end spoiler

sound: 10/10
the music in this game is very catchy,(i DARE you to get the shop music out of your head) and the final boss music has 3 parts; an awesome sounding one, a disturbing sounding one, and an OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL AM I LISTENING TO THIS IS FREAKIER THAN THE MAJORA'S INCARNATION MUSIC FROM MAJORA'S MASK!

story: 8/10

in the beginning of the game, a meteor crashes into a nearby hill, waking your main character up, who is a seemingly average kid named Ness. after a bit of wandering around and investigating (apparently Onett it famous for putting up roadblocks), your quest, which is to destroy Giygas (basically some creepy a**....thing) begins! nothing too original here

gameplay: 10/10
granted, i haven't played many RPG's (maybe about 5, not counting pokemon) but this is one of my favorites. your characters can learn magic spells (called PSI). your 4 characters are...

#1: Ness
Ness is your main character in the game. he is the strongest offensive-wise, and can learn one of the strongest spells
#2 Paula
Paula is the team's main PSI user, but she lacks in physical attacks
#3 Jeff
Jeff is the only team member that cant use PSI, but he has good attacks, and he can shoot bottle rockets at his opponents and fix broken items to turn them into weapons
#4 Poo (thats REALLY his name, if you hit Dont Care at the naming screen)
Poo is probably my least favorite of the 4. he can only equip 4 items in the entire game, and he can only eat certain food items in the game. he learns 1 good spell though and he can copy the enemy sometimes, resulting in Poo turning into the enemy.

this game's fight encounters are different from other RPG's in that you can see your enemies in the overworld. if you approach them head on, its a normal fight. if you sneak up on them, you get to attack first. if they sneak up on you, they attack first. if you run into a weak enemy, you dont even have to fight, you just get the experience.

overall: 10/10

this is a very fun RPG, and i dare you to name another RPG where one of the enemies is called a "New Age Retro Hippie"

The ending is kind of a mind screw eeven before the whole... you know... thing.

I mean, where the hell did this whole "Apple of " deal come from?

At least when Nintendo does pure evil, they know exactly what is pure evil suposed to be. Unlike others who make it look like a joke.

Apple of Enlightment. Comes from the most known book of all time : <

They make pure evil boss from a pure traumatic experience from childhood. :3

Also the secret nature on the battle of Giygass is evil to some :3

Still, even if Mr(s). Big Bad did eat that exact apple and become that... "concept", it doesn't explain why we don't hear about the whole apple deal until, well, it has already eaten the apple. Which is to say, a few minutes before the final boss fights.

That's what I meant by "Where did the whole thing come from?" It came literally out of nowhere!

I call the appearence of that sub plot a Diabolos Ex Machina to the main characters if you ask me.

Well, not that the plots are much sensical troughout the entirity of the game, anyways. I think it might be better that way.

The apple is mentioned at the begining and at the very end. : < It's a way to mark the begining and end.

What I can see is these posible thing.s

1) Following it literatly, it's something that can predict the future; so at the begining you read it; and at the end - even by knowing the future PORKY doesn't gives a damn, since he think that Giygas will win that outecome regardless.
2) Ness and his friends finally realize the plot - ergo, they ate the apple and know that they have a chance to beat him.
3) Giygas is already consumed by all evil; but seeing at the subliminal theme of abortion - the entrance to the cave, utherus, cervix, and the backround baby, along with what Giygass says - he hasn't yet taken the apple: it's an inocent child. Once he does, bam, evil emerges and destroys all world on hte future (Ness timeline).
4) A long time ago, I read an article at Starman.net (?) and it compared the story and the story of Genesis - and I recall that there were a lot of references to it ... Can't redirect tho... xd Dunno the article.

This is starting to go on the Wild Guessing bandwagon. There's too many theories on the meaning of the game('s ending) (and the abortion one seems to be a prevalent one).
And to be fair, I kinda pull myself out of the loop on this one. Its understandable that everyone tries to give some meaning to the game. I mean, it litterally screws our mind over, anyone would try to give it a meaning.
But if there's something Yumme Nikki thaught me, is to stop listening past some point. Most theories are... a shirt to wear faithully for a week only. They are too much trouble to keep and then one day see it all crumble apart or never getting an conclusion.

I'll just be happy that the apple is also mentioned in the beggining. As long as it was mentioned and not an asspull that's all I care.

Hmmm... Speaking of Yumme Nikki... *goes watch some videos again*

its too bad that they wont release on VC, due to the "yellow submarine"
and used copies are rare and i have never seen one, so your best bet would be to play it on an emulator
