After their moderately successful run to the sporting goods store, Astan and the twins now collectively possessed a backpack for the protos to ride around in. Between the new bag and Rahk and Ro's ability to remain almost completely still in public, Astan looked less like he was harboring illegal life forms and more like... a grown man with a knapsack full of dolls.
Today they were wandering the streets near Astan's apartment, looking for something to do together on his last day as a free man. Tomorrow night he was out of sick days and it was back to work as a bouncer at Forty-Five. It was to be the first time the Essentics would be left alone since they had arrived. Astan was understandably more than a little concerned.
At the moment, he had the backpack on the wrong way and the protos had popped their heads out of the top. They still weren't moving more than their eyes, but at least they could see everything he could. And smell everything. Some sort of delicious smell was coming out of a building up ahead.
"Can we go in there?" Rahk whispered.
Astan attempted to place a hand over its mouth, but his palm managed to cover not only Rahk's tiny mouth, but its whole face. He replied in as soft a voice as he could manage. "Yeah. I was going to. Shh."

Five burnt brownies later, Dreamer was taking out her first perfectly cooked plate of brownies. With a satisfied grin, she placed it atop the stove and glanced around the shop. No one was left, everyone had successfully been able to make triple chocolate fudge brownies on their first attempt then gone out for a few hours; Dreamer had not and was renting out the little place for a few more practice rounds. Zelia walked around the counter to inspect the brownies, hands behind her back she leaned over and smirked.
" Well, finally some progress can be seen. You still have three hours and thirty minutes left within the building, I suggest you prepare lunch and dinner for tonight to save yourself some time. " The blinds on the windows had been brought down so no one could see inside, and the door was partially covered. I'd be rare if anyone came in, and even so Zelia had been told to stand still like a doll. Dreamer sighed, the fridges were plenty enough to make a nice little dinner and probably something for the rest of the week. Martha was forcing her after all to practice her cooking, no better way to learn if she doesn't try out things by herself. Dreamer took off the cooking gloves and threw them casually beside the brownies. Bending down she took out the largest recipe book and dropped it onto the counter.
" I saw catfish in the fridge, I think I'll try finding a recipe for it. " Walking over to the edge of the counter, Zelia sat down with her legs dangling on the side of the counter and watched Dreamer read through the numerous recipes. Zelia of course, was only thinking about keeping Dreamer in good health if she wanted to keep up with her night life; so when the crispy catfish green mango salad came up and Dreamer seemed to have skipped it, Zelia pointed it out.
" I think nice combination of fruits, nuts and fish would be good for keeping your stamina up at night when you are managing the club. " Dreamer made a face, the recipe looked rather a little difficult to make. Zelia glanced up at her owner with a blank face, a slight irritation passing over her features once as she spotted the face Dreamer was making.
" Alright, you don't have to give me that look. " Zelia almost smiled, the corners of her mouth twitched slightly. If anyone was going to put Dreamer on the right path, it was going to be her.

Astan pushed at the shop's door, meeting a bit of resistance but not enough to discourage him from continuing. When he saw Dreamer standing there, alone, he held up an apologetic hand. "Sorry. Thought this was just a shop shop. For selling things." He chuckled, then started to duck back outside again. Ro reached out a hand and poked Astan in the arm.
"Wait," Rahk whispered. Ro gestured toward Zelia as Rahk continued to speak. "It's like Misha. Or Uzi. Or us." It smiled.
"Oh. Um. On second thought, can w... I come in?" Whether or not the man seemed crazy probably hinged on how loud he and Rahk had been whispering and whether or not Zelia recognized the twins as her peers.

Dreamer glanced up from the book, and immediately grabbed onto Zelia as if she were an actual toy and hide her behind her back as quick as she could. "Dreamer! Release me, I cannot breath!" Dreamer ignored Zelia's resistance against her back and tried smiling.
"Sure come on in! I just took out some brownies. I need someone to test taste them." Zelia tried moving away from Dreamer, that man did not want to taste her brownies.
" No don't --" Zelia yelled out, but was soon muffled by Dreamer's hand over her mouth. Zelia had watched her owner make the brownies and knew there was far to much baking soda in them, that Dreamer hadn't even notice that something was different about the man, much less heard them was really starting to annoy the proto. Dreamer needed to get out more. "Shush Zelia."

Astan cast a sidelong look at Dreamer. What was she doing? "Sure," he said warily, stepping fully into the shop. He was always up for brownies, but if there was something wrong with this woman, maybe he didn't want any of her baked goods.
Upon hearing the door click softly shut behind Astan, Ro began climbing out of the backpack immediately. It had scrambled halfway down his leg before he realized what was going on. "Rrrrr..." he said, dragging out the consonant until he was able to discern which of the twins was making a getaway. When the other tried to escape as well, he was ready. He grabbed Rahk around its middle, shoved it back in the bag and zipped the top closed.
"Hey!" it said, voice muffled.
Now certain that the proto racing across the floor was Ro, Astan reached his hands out in front of him briefly but didn't otherwise move. It was too late now. Ro skittered off in an attempt to get behind Dreamer and get a better look at the proto she held.
"I...uh." Still unable to see Zelia, Astan didn't quite know how to explain himself. He hoped this woman wasn't a cop.

'Dreamer... Your brownies don't taste good, do you want to kill him?' The owner restrained herself from narrowing her eyes, plus that man was extremely tall, and Dreamer would be lying if she didn't say she was slightly intimidated by his bulk. Zelia pushed herself slightly off, enough to take in a deep breath of air, her owner was sometimes far to rash. She needed to pay attention to details more often. 'Dreamer, watch and listen carefully and you might notice something.' And then it slowly clicked in when she spotted something jumping off of the man's bag, and run towards her. Surprised, she released Zelia who landed on on the ground with a light thud. While Dreamer took a step back, Zelia pushed and brushed herself off. The purple proto leaned down at the other proto and stuck her hand out at it for a greeting.
" I'm Zelia. " She said casually, a smiling curling up on her lips.
" So you also own an essentic? " Dreamer glanced at the man, a growing smile on her own lips.

Ro smiled as well, its enthusiastic open-mouthed grin transforming its expression into one any overexcited anime character would be proud of. It held out a hand as well, but didn't say anything at all.
Well then. This was new. Astan had met so many humanish essentics lately that he was starting to wonder if anyone still had protos. Funny that he hadn't even known essentics grew into beings that could pass for human mere weeks ago, and now he was somehow thinking poor protos inferior. "Yes," he said, subdued by the young woman's professional demeanor. Not a cop, then. He felt Rahk's fists pounding his chest through the bag and unzipped it again, pulling out the second essentic and placing it gently on the floor. "Two of them."
Rahk wasted no time. It raced over to join its sibling and this Zelia. "That is Ro," it said, surprisingly helpful for a change. Ro nodded.

Zelia observed them curiously. 'Twins, how interesting' she thought pleasantly. Then she turned to the second one, and extended her hand to this one as well.
"And you are?" Dreamer watched the exchange from the corner of her eye, she wondered if Zelia would ever get soft. Deciding she may as well follow Zelia's lead, Dreamer moved around the counters to introduce herself.
" I'm Dreamer and that's Zelia over there talking to your proto's. It's always a pleasure meeting someone else who owns essentics. " She extended her hand.
" As for the brownies... Well they are apparently inedible... Again. " She sighed softly, she'd have to restart... Again.

"I am Rahk. Pleased to meet you." Not only helpful, but polite as well. Today must have been a special day. Truthfully, Rahk was just intrigued by this comparatively small essentic. So many of their kind were unnecessarily large. "You are Zelia. That is a good name." It held out its hand and shook the other proto's.
Astan held out a hand to Dreamer near-simultaneously. "Astan," he said. "And those two are Rahk and Ro. Sorry for barging in like this." He glared at the brownies. "Ah well, that kinda sucks. They don't look so bad. How many batches have you made?"
