[It should be widely known by now (to any interested parties) that the show Degrassi: The Next Generation is a re-make of the shows Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High, which aired in the 80's. The shows are Canadian creations. Now, Nickelodeon's "special interest" channel, The-N, (geared toward toddlers in the morning and early afternoon, then teens from late afternoon into the early morning), is showing many new teen dramas and is planning for the release of a slew of others in 2006, some of them products of America and some from Canada.
-Do you think these shows are really helpful to tweens and teens?
-Do you think parents watch these shows to try to make some sense out of what their kids are going through? (Why do they show debt-management/consolidation commercials during breaks in the show after midnight?)
-Have you ever watched these shows for guidance?
-Do you think they are realistic as far as characters, acting, scenarios, outcomes, consequences, etc?
-Do they do a good job of prtraying teens today?
-Which of the shows currently on do you like the most? (Degrassi: The Next Generation, South of Nowhere, Instant Star, etc.)
-Discuss anything else related.]

[I do watch Degrassi (the new chapter and the "old school" episodes). One of the things I don't like in the newer series is that in some of the characters' lowest moments, the show starts to seem fake. For example, when Manny gets drunk and decides to take off her top on-camera: she portrayed a drunken teen very badly. For one thing, after sitting at the bar drinking something (with no chaser) for what was made out to be a long time, she just hopped up out of the chair and skipped off with Peter (?), no wabbly legs or trying to balance herself or anything. rolleyes And while on the subject of this character, it seems like most of the main characters have had sex. What's up with that? I'm sure it could happen, but showing that no one seems to be a virgin is a sure way to make young viewers feel more alienated and less like the makers of the show know how they feel. neutral ]

I freakin' hate Degrassi!! i am so disgusted by the behavior of those damned kids, and i shudder to think that somewhere there are actual teens acting that way. damn whores and assholes, every one of them. the very few who aren't are so ineffectual, they might as well not be on the show.

[I think they meant well, the creators of the new show. Did you not like the original Degrassi either? I think the "old school" episodes are more realistic than the ones for the new generation, ironically. I know that there are kids out there that are like them in some ways; who behave like them and talk like them to an extent. I think they emphasize the "whores and assholes" part because it's still a show, and shows need good ratings. To get good ratings these days, most shows throw in as much drama as they can. Promiscuity and haughtiness are at the height of drama. 3nodding ]

Eh, I used to watch it. Lately, it's been getting...raunchy. I mean, JT and Liberty having a baby? I stopped watching when they started focusing on Marco, and seeing what had happened in such a short time was surprising.

heart [JT and Liberty were a wierd choice...but they wanted to show that it could happen to anyone; the smart kid that no one suspected was even sexually active is now having to choose whether or not to give up her child for adoption. I think it's important that they focus on Marco at least a little. I see huge amounts of young male and female Gaians claiming to be homosexual; whether it's because it's the "cool" or "rebellious" or "expressive" thing to do, or whether they truly believe they were born that way, they need to be able to have a glance into what such a choice can entail. 3nodding ]
[@ Kenai: I wish they took that into consideration, too. Not all the audience is going to fall into their definition of what the "target audience" should be. Just like Seventeen Magazine: most of the readers are between 11 and 14, even though the content is still geared toward 16 and 17 year olds. Last I saw, they were even printing the words "b***h" and "a**" in that magazine.
I think the makers of anything geared toward teens overestimate the protectiveness of a lot of parents. They expect the parents to "allow" their kids to watch/read this media at the parent's discretion. Not alway the case of course.]

Ack, I despise that show. It's so un realistic to teen life. Then again, i'm pretty well behaved and have great friends, none of them do drugs or anything so I might not be very up to date with how bad teens these days are. The only show I watch on Noggin is the Fresh Prince, love that show biggrin

The only show I watch on Noggin is the Fresh Prince, love that show biggrin [In my opinion it's not as "unrealistic" as it may be "exaggerrated." 3nodding Degrassi only has a half hour each Friday (for new episodes) to show you the cause and effect of one choice. So they try to stuff the show full of as many trials and tribulations as they can. I think thought that sometimes the show is too gloomy. No one seems to ever have a good day or a good time, unless of course there is something bad tied to it.
Example: Sure, Jimmy had a good time touring the art exhibit with Ellie, BUT as a result, he was late to his basketball tryouts and the coach and his father were pissed.
Sure, teens make mistakes. But that's not all life is. Getting busted doing this or that, having the trial of your life, making a fool of yourself....that's not all there is to life, and it gets a little depressing how DeGrassi seems to show the bad side of everything all the time. Those kids, their lives SUCK. Existing is difficult, but most of the time, the nerdiest, sluttiest, stupidest, rudest kid is going to have a good day at least once...! 3nodding
PS I love the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. I've watched the series from the first episode to the last at least 3 times. xd (Not all at once, and just by watching it on regular TV, because I never recorded it or bought videos or DVDs.)]

If they stopped all the constant drama people would lose interest in the show though, that's just what kids want these days.

Eh... I've watched it a few times... one were Marco told his parents he was gay... and then another when the boy pushed his girlfriend or whatever down and she hit her head on a rock. rolleyes It just seemed like there was too much drama in one school... then I look at mine... ha. It seems like they are trying to touch on every barrier a teenager might face in high school... I don't know... it doesn't appeal to me as much as it does to my friends.

[That's what I was saying...Sometimes in the effort to make the show as real as possible it becomes unreal that so much drama goes down. But I bet if you took an intimate look at the lives of a small group of kids who stand out in the school, it would be similar to a degree. surprised ]

It's quite natural to want to beat some sense into people when they seem to act so ignorant...But I give the writers credit: I haven't seen one character who doesn't have a "redeeming" quality. None of the characters are bad to the core; so unspeakably evil that there's no way that a normal person could relate to them. 3nodding ]
