I'm posting the lists that Neko and I received by the deadline, with the words grouped alphabetically. If anyone is willing to double-check my counting and/or the spellings and actual existence of the words on the lists, please feel free to do so and PM any corrections/comments to me or Neko. It is encouraging that the Gaia Spellcheck thinks most of them are fine. (Ironic note: the spellchecker doesn't think "Gaia" is correct!)
WInners will be announced as soon as I have time to get them all verified! When I was a kid, our teachers tried to improve our language skills by having us make as many words as we could from the phrases "Happy Thanksgiving" or "Merry Christmas". Liatha says she did the same thing with her chemistry classes, only they had to use symbols from the Periodic Table of Elements. (Fluorine, Uranium, Carbon and Potassium were NOT permitted in the same word ... get a Periodic Table to see why.) blaugh
In an effort to be politically correct and maintain our Guild theme, we are having a contest to see who can list the most words derived from the phrase "Vash the Stampede"Rules: 1. Only the letters from the phrase may be used. (AADEEEHHMPSSTTV) You can only use multiples of a letter if the phrase has multiples. (see above list) 2. Words must be at least 4 letters long. ("the" is too short. "them" is fine.) 3. Singular and plural of the same word count as ONE word. (Adding "s" doesn't give you another word.) 4. Proper names are allowed as long as they are from "Trigun". 5. Slang is okay, swear words are not. 6. You may use non-English words, but please tell us the language(s) in case we don't recognize it. 7. Misspelled words (in any language) will not be counted.
Entrants so far:
[ . CoCoa Puffs . ] - 395 <-- first place! Haxor Vash - 227 Kirameki Toguro - 40 kridnor - 48 methuselah.alchemist - 37 Saiyana2 - 340 <-- second place! Silvery the Alchemist - 145
PM your completed list to pseudoVash or NekoNyah before December 1st. All entrants will receive a Holographic Eyepiece (any color):
The list with the most words wins their choice of Autumn Glory or Autumn Wings (both worth 30,000+ gold) Other prizes will be added depending upon the number of entries received.

what if adding an s at the end doesn't pluralize a word? It changes a passive verb to an active one? Also what about archaic or obscure spellings?

Saiyana2 what if adding an s at the end doesn't pluralize a word? It changes a passive verb to an active one? Also what about archaic or obscure spellings? Like "run" and "runs"? Those two can be a noun/plural noun pair, too. The biggest reason for banning plurals is that someone who keeps adding "s" to words shouldn't have an advantage over someone who is reading an entire dictionary to find more individual words. Archaic or regional spellings are fine as long as there is evidence of the spelling. We certainly aren't going to quibble about "grey" vs "gray" or whether or not "color" has a "u". If you can find it in the OED (Oxford English Dictionary), it should be okay. I don't own an OED (it has 20 volumes, each of which is the size of a regular dictionary, and costs just under $1000) but I'm sure I could check on specific words. In the end, we'll probably take the top 3-5 lists and peruse them carefully, then make any judgement calls about the validity of the words. Sound fair?

Sounds good I will try to limit the obsure archaic to rcongnizable words. But if there are questions I assume we will be able to site our sources.
