[ORP] This is why I hate firelizards in the morning.

Ngaran was certainly in a pleasant mood today--sarcasm sarcasm. He had been woken up early by some Sharding firelizard that had no idea what it meant to sleep, and had thus been sitting there crowing its little Blue heart out until Ngaran had thrown something at it. After that, the firelizard ceased his serenade with an indignant huff and had disappeared between, probably to go complain to somebody. He didn't mind, though--it was a little more quiet. Rolling over him his bed, Ngaran clapped the pillow over his head and tried one more time to fall back to sleep, to no avail. With a groan, the tousled Candidate rose sluggishly out of bed and got dressed before going to check on the small grapevine that he had brought.

He really didn't want to walk out of the Candidate Barracks, especially not this early, but hey, he had to check up on the thing. Still, it would put Ngaran in a better mood, something that was desperately needed right now.

Hilena was woken more by the sudden cessation of the firelizard's song than by its cheerful crowing. It was still early, she realised - early enough, maybe, to snatch some exploring time to herself before she was called on for more candidate-drudging.

She dressed quickly and headed outside, trying to finger-comb a knot out of her unruly hair as she went. Concentrating on the wayward strands in front of her eyes, she didn't notice the boy until she'd almost bumped into him. She pushed the hair out of the way hurriedly, and recognising him as another candidate, gave him a bright, apologetic smile.

"Good morning, isn't it looking like a nice day, I hope we have some outside chores, did you hear the firelizards before, they're so pretty, what are you doing up so early? I'm Hilena," she added, finally taking a breath.

Ngaran blinked sleepily, totally whipped off guard by the stream of words that came out of the girl's mouth. Geez, she could talk a dragonlength a minute! The only thing that made sense on the initial delivery was her name--Hilena. "Ngaran." he grumbled, rubbing his eyes with one hand. How could she be so cheery and perky when it was this early? Shouldn't be possible, nope, especially not by his standards.

It took another second for the rest of Hilena's words to sink in, and he merely responded with a grunt. Ngaran wasn't very sociable in the morning, nope.

"Ngaran? Pleased to meet you."

Hilena held out her hand in greeting, noting the boy's tired eyes and terse response. Strange how some people just couldn't cope with mornings. Every single day had one, so where was the point in making a fuss about it?

"You look like you could use some klah," she told him.

Instead of something intelligible, Ngaran ended up saying something that only sounded vaguely like 'yeah, klah'd be nice.' He shook Hilena's hand before lumbering off into the direction of the kitchens, not even noticing the fact that he only had one sandal on.

After a bit of sleep-impaired trundling, Ngaran remembered that he was going to go check the vine. So he made a slow turn over to the little niche where he had placed it, realizing somewhere along the way that his other sandal was back in the barracks. Not that he cared much at the moment, that is.

Hilena started to follow Ngaran kitchenwards, but paused when he unexpectedly changed directions. It was very deliberately done for someone so obviously in need of more sleep, but though she stared after him, she couldn't spot anything that might have drawn his attention.

Curiosity stirred, Hilena took note of his direction, then continued on to the kitchens at a run. She snagged a klah pitcher and a couple of mugs, waving cheerily to the kitchen worker who was pulling fresh meat rolls out of an oven, and therefore couldn't stop her flying off again before chores were assigned.

She headed back outside at only a slightly more circumspect pace, the klah sloshing at the rim of the jug, but the strong smell was invigorating. She caught up with the shambling Ngaran with hardly any spillage.

"Klah!" she announced, holding up the pitcher invitingly.

"Hn? Uh, thanks." Ngaran took a mug and the pitcher from her with a nod, filling his mug and just barely avoiding spilling the hot liquid all over himself. After taking a swig of it, he looked a little bit less sleepy and felt somewhat more alert, and he filled Hilena's mug as an afterthought. Why he was being somewhat decent this morning he didn't know, but eh, whatever.

He turned back to the little shelf where he had stashed his vine, only to come face to face with that same warbling Blue flitt from earlier. The little upstart was curled around the pot, and Ngaran did not look amused. The Blue was sleeping, quite soundly in fact, and it was all Ngaran could do not to completely strangle the Sharding thing in front of Hilena and anybody else who could be watching. Instead, he took another long sip of klah and waited, hoping the flitt would wake up and leave before he had to make it.

Hilena raised her mug in a little thank-you salute when Ngaran filled it for her. Lovely manners under that gruff and groggy exterior, she thought, blowing on the hot liquid as she watched him. Not many people bothered to serve her food and drink, here or back at the Hold. It was a nice change.

She had intended to ask why Ngaran was up so early, now he had some klah in him, but he shifted and she finally caught sight of what he was looking at. She nearly dropped the mug.

"Ohh! Oh, how lovely, is he yours? What a little darling! You should have told me, I'd have grabbed some meat scraps as well!"

She quickly set her drink down next to the pitcher and moved closer to stand beside Ngaran, cooing in delight at the blue firelizard, oblivious to the pot and to her companion's annoyance.
