A lone figure stood on the porch to the white home as metallic eyes searched the reaches of the night for anyone or anything. After her short talk with Alex, Ebony had immediately called Aphismet as well, the only other person she trusted enough with something of this magnitude. She already knew from the incident with Lazarus that her and the Italian woman could easily take care of things if they needed, but since she had no idea where Cordelia could be, the more people looking the better. Besides, she wasn't feeling particularly strong right then and didn't need to let Alex down more than she already had.
Thus she stood and stared blankly into the night, awaiting her rushed search party, yet also praying that the black scaled girl would suddenly appear and make the need for such moot. But that never happened and Ebony only got more and more worried by the minute. She hoped they would arrive soon. Every minute felt like an eternity and who knows how far the Snake could have traveled by then. That was, if Cordelia had indeed gone somewhere and hadn't..."Don't think like that." she barked to herself, but a shiver ran down her spine anyhow at the thought.

As if Zul's sickness wasn't enough...they really are all infected.
Alex drove like a woman possessed. Her hair was pulled back only into a ponytail to keep it out of her face, a light hoodie over her lean frame and zipped to her chest, her pants lightly spattered with dots of clay. She'd been using the pottery wheel to try and focus and not panic over Zul so much that the call of someone else's upset was almost welcome, in a sick and twisted way - it meant she could put her energy towards solving another problem that wasn't her own, and thus, her focus was returned. Her green eyes flicked only briefly to Zul as they pulled up to the designated address - he'd insisted on coming - before she jumped out of the truck and jogged over to meet with Ebony.
The first thing she did was embrace the woman like an old friend. She'd worry about the niceties of it all later. "Hey, are you okay?" she asked, looking over the violet-haired woman's face with concern. Yes, Cordelia needed to be found, but Ebony also needed to be shown some care in all this. Alex was beginning to understand that very well; dealing with Zul's illness by herself was harrowing.
Any other given time, Zul would have clung to the door and stuck his head out the window with glee at his woman's decidedly racecar-esque driving. His sickness had sapped most of the life from him, keeping the Frei listless against the seat as they came into Gambino. He felt awful, but Cordelia was in trouble. The demon was not going to stay at home and feel bad for himself when his black-scaled friend was in danger, no matter what!
Zul slid out of the truck several moments after Alex did, his ribbon seeming to droop with the effort. The door closed lightly in his wake, his approach to Ebony not quite as grandoise as he would have liked, but he was content with being able to float upright at all. The episode on his birthday had made him feel slightly off-kilter, but he wasn't ready to divulge that information to anyone but Alex, either by word or show. That meant he had a show to put on, and damned if he wouldn't try.
His wings tucked against his back, the heat of his body a bit higher than usual, giving his short hair a life of its own in the heat that rolled off of him; for all intents and purposes, he looked healthy despite what he'd been through. The only ill-looking bit about him was that his orange rune had taken on a darker, sick palor, as if the glow was from within a rock sediment now. "Miss Shade," he greeted Ebony cordially, although his voice was less smoke-like and more a steam-like rumble, akin to a volcano's first threat of life. "We'll find her." No preambles here; they would find Cordelia. There was no other option in the demon's addled mind.

Aphismet should not have mentioned that Alex was also going. That had been the deciding factor for Rivener, who'd bullied the chef into letting him come. The chef kept glancing at the Sigel as though he was a timebomb, riding there in the passenger's seat and ready to explode into violence at any moment. Riv, thankfully, was too wrapped up in seeing Zul to pose much of a threat at the moment.
The car pulled into Ebony's driveway, both men holding their breath to note that Alex's truck was already here. Before Aphi had even completely stopped the car, Rivener had shoved open the door and leapt out, zooming over the driveway and seeking- Ah, there! Rivener spotted Zul and instantly hurried over, slipping both arms around the demon from behind and hugging tightly, mindful of Zul's sharp spines. "Mmmmnhh... hey, are you warmer than usual?" the Scorpion asked, ignoring the humans for the moment.
Aphi followed soon after, long legs taking him straight over to the two females. He scooped them both into a hug, eyes closed in worry. "Are you okay, Ebs? I didn't even know your Raevan was born, congratulations... although I'd wished we could have learned of it under better circumstances. Erm..." He released his hug and glanced over at the Scorpion, who was still cuddling up to Zul, kissing at his neck.
"We, ah... Rivener's been acting weird lately, very aggressive, so let's just be careful around him, okay? I'm sure he'll help us look if that's what Zul's doing, but uhm... Watch your backs around him." Even though Riv's stingers were both wrapped up with bandages lately (Aphi had no idea why, having gotten yelled at when he asked), they were both still VERY capable of stinging through that thin cloth... "So where do we start looking?" Aphi asked, eager to change the topic and get to the real reason they were all assembled.

She'd been so consumed with her worries that the Brit hadn't saw the car pull up nor had she heard their approach until Alex was wrapping her arms around her in a tight hug. At any other time, Ebony would have winced at such a display of affection directed to her, but now she found it was exactly what she needed. Uncharacteristically, she hugged the woman back and whispered, "Alex, Zul, I...thank you..."
It was a surprise when suddenly another pair of arms came out of nowhere and embraced the already hugging women. She blinked back tears and looked up at the all too familiar face of her student. No, he was much more than a pupil, Aphismet was her friend. His quick presence here only strengthening that fact. A touch of bittersweet warmth touched her heart then, but it was soon drowned under the crushing prospect of their reality.
Pulling back from the others, "I honestly don't know. I was painting her room when she screamed. I came running down and she-she was shaking so badly. Alex, that hickie Laz gave her it-it never got better and tonight it seemed to just erupt around her skin like a rash. Then..." For once in a long, long time, Ebony couldn't hold that carefully crafted facade together. Right there in front of Alex and Aphismet, the purple haired woman's normally stoic mask crumbled to dust and she sobbed uncontrollably. "She just burst! Into smoke! I looked all around the house, but she doesn't talk so I don't know...you don't thinks she's...?" Again she couldn't finish the morbid thought.

"Thank you for calling us," Alex murmured before the other vehicle pulled up. Aphismet's arms around them was an immediate and welcome warmth, closing her eyes for a moment to hug and be hugged, drawing strength from the brief show of affection. When the man spoke of Rivener 'acting weird,' it occured to the Italian that she never went into details of what had happened that fateful day...and that her lack of professionalism had lead to Rivener's - and, oh god, Eiry? - infection. Alex mentally kicked herself so hard that she nearly wanted to cry herself, but they were there for Ebony and Cordelia, and she would refrain from going into a panic attack until it was resolved. How was she going to tell Aphismet...?
"Okay," she said quietly to her boyfriend, turning her eyes back to Ebony as the woman began to speak. Alex had no claim of knowing Ebony outside of being a strong-willed woman with a hell of a grip, so she did not know the cost of what the violet-haired woman was showing them. All she did know was that she felt the same way, and that the new Guadian's concern for her Raevan was doubled by her own heart. The Italian immediately embraced Ebony again, cursing herself for not carrying any tissues on her like a normal woman should.
Shaking her head, Alex spoke softly. "The infection got her then," she surmised, trying to rely on her training and teachings and not her emotions for the moment. "She's just a newborn, so I imagine that much power, so suddenly, her essence just reacted." At least it wasn't her soul, Alex thought inwardly, recalling Cordelia's information. "She's here," came the firm conviction, determined to chase off any doubt of the newborn's life disappearing, "I promise, I swear we'll find her." How the hell were they going to catch smoke? Keeping an arm around Ebony - just in case - she looked around the area, then back to the house. "Maybe Zul and Rivener will help just by being here. Do you want to start in the house?"
"Yesss," Zul almost genuinely purred in response, although if it was to the question posed or Rivener's attention to his warm skin, it was hard to say. His wings freeded themselves from the Sigel's chest, the claw-like tips drawing the round curve of bone over the Scorpion's shoulders and neck, as if touching him with his hands wasn't enough. The demon draped his arms around the ones holding him so tightly, doing his best to press against Rivener in return. This was his cure-all, no matter how bad he felt.
The demon's head lolled backwards to look at his Scorpion, his smile all languid satisfaction and a deeper, heated pride. Blue eyes caught the strange whiteness against the crimson and onyx of Rivener's wings, giving the stingers a most curious look. "Is my Rivener hurt?" he asked, although there was another faint rumble of threat in his voice. If someone had hurt him, there would be no lengths, no depths of Hell that he wouldn't release onto--!
Zul closed his eyes for a moment, struck by another dizzy spell. The rage seemed to bring on his bouts of awareness of words and actions, but he wouldn't lose himself in front of Rivener. Instead, he tried to float even closer, as if his exposed spine could become a part of the Scorpion's body, the heat of his body flickering momentarily hotter before dimming back to the abnormal warmth.

Aphismet, unlike Alex, very well knew how uncharacteristic it was for Ebony to break down like that. The white-haired chef blinked wide-open eyes as his own throat closed up in sympathy. For Ebs to sob like that, she must be worried out of her mind! "Aw, Ebony, Sh... We'll find her, just like Alex said, she's probably fine." Slipping his long sleeve over a hand, Aphi wiped at Ebony's cheeks lightly with the fabric, offering a soft smile while the purple-haired woman was wrapped up in the Italian's arms.
Aphi had no idea what Alex meant by infection, but it might have something to do with the Lab lately. Hadn't Laz been acting strangely too? Sighing, hoping this wasn't going to be the start of a very BAD day, Aphismet stood near the two other women as Alex suggested they begin in the house.
"Everything's going to be okay, Ebs. C'mon, Alex is right, let's go look inside, okay?" Aphi shared Alex's unspoken worries: how did you catch smoke? How would they even find it? He wouldn't say any of that out loud, however. He'd stay positive and helpful no matter what.
Rivener ignored the humans easily even despite the ruckus over there. It was much too easy to be engrossed completely in Zul, the demon melting back against him so perfectly, purring like that. Riv had to admit he enjoyed the warmer-than-usual skin, letting his eyes slip shut and basking in it like a sunning lizard. "Sooo comfortable, my Zuuul."
Rivener's praise was shortlived, as a moment later the demon had asked about his wings and then proceeded to wobble worryingly in the Sigel's arms, as though dizzy. Riv tightened his hold on Zul and gasped, frowning. Was Zul alright? "...My wings are not hurt, Zul. They're just spilling too much poison lately and I don't wanna make a mess, that's all." Riv hadn't even told Aphismet, but it was so much easier to tell Zul. Zul wasn't a stupid waste of space like Aphi was. "What about you, why are you here if you're so sick you're dizzy? Why ARE you here? Aphi told me something but I wasn't paying attention..."

Feebly, Ebony nodded to the others suggestions of searching the house again. It hadn't occurred to her to tell them it was useless to check in there since she'd check the place a million times already it seemed. A smaller part of her mind worrying about the locked door that lead to the basement of which no one needed to see, least of all them.
Leading the way, she rubbed furiously at the rest of her tears, mumbling weakly about something getting stuck in her eyes. "Cordelia likes to be warm. So maybe if I re-light the fireplace it'll draw her back?" She couldn't be absolutely sure about this, but it was worth a try right? What would it mean if the girl wasn't drawn back by that sort of heat source? No, she had to stop thinking the girl was dead or something like it. They would find her. They had to!
Squaring her shoulders and summoning back up her inner strength, "Aphismet, could you help me with gathering the logs? They're out back by the greenhouse."
While the two Raevans conversed, joying in their reunion, a wispy dark cloud slithered after them. The smaller of the two was giving off such delicious heat and the scent...heavenly. Or perhaps hellish depending on how one saw it. Nevertheless, the black tendrils snaked through the grass after the others.

"That is a fantastic idea," Alex agreed to Ebony's suggestion of the fireplace. "She did seem to like the heat." The woman's green eyes momentarily flicked towards the two Raevans, knowing well that Zul's body heat had been slowly increasing over the past few days. Maybe something good can come of this, after all, she mused inwardly in a dry contemplation.
When the other woman asked Aphismet about helping with logs, Alex decided to stay back. She had no idea of the friendship between them, but assumed it must have been great if Ebony chose to call him during her dire time. "I'll look around here," she offered up, finally letting the woman go, "and guys? If you smell smoke, say something immediately." Would Cordelia leave a scent? She had no idea, but her logical mind seemed to think so. It was worth mentioning, at the very least. The Italian stuck her hands into the shallow pockets of her hoodie, giving an encouraging smile to Ebony and a bit of a sweeter one to Aphismet before she broke away from the two, looking around the porch area of the white house.
The demon nodded a slow understanding to Rivener's words, his eyes opening again; the blue was almost lost for a few moments, as if it had faded out, or as though his pupils might swallow the blue itself. "Sorry," he murmured lightly, having some idea that he might have been responsible for the Sigel's predicament. Zul hadn't thought he was infected all this time, but finally had to agree with Alex's claims in the past few days. Something was wrong.
At the question, the demon could only chuckle, the sound not unlike the rumble in his voice. "Stormy," he replied, not having enough presence of mind to know that Rivener would not know his nickname for the femme fatale. One of Zul's bone wing tips lifted to lightly touch the Sigel's face, a weak show of affection in his heat to be near the Scorpion, "Get to see you. Can't be all bad." He would not tell Rivener the extent of his sickness. He couldn't. He didn't even understand it himself, nor would he know how to explain pain when it was the first time he'd truly felt it.
"You?" he inquired in return, still not grasping that the Scorpion would come all the way to Gambino on the chance of seeing him. "Why is..." What as that smell? "...my Rivener here?" Zul momentarily looked away, but did not see anything, and the scent disappeared just as quickly as he'd thought he'd smelled it.

Aphismet nodded at his teacher's command to fetch firewood. The chef didn't know the first thing about Ebony's Raevan, but by the sound of things she would enjoy a nice cozy fire? If Aphi could help by fetching wood, then by golly that's what he'd do. He recalled easily the greenhouse in the back yard, and grinned before he set off. "I'll bring it to the fireplace right now! Won't be long."
Aphi smiled at both women and took a few skipping side-steps as he finished talking, getting a head start on his chore before he turned and ran full-tilt around the house.
Finding the pile of wood was easy enough, and Aphismet picked an armful of logs. He carried them up to the porch and put them down, returning a short while later with another armful. That should be more than enough... Without knocking, figuring it was assumed that he'd be invited in, Aphismet opened the back door and began ferrying the wood to the fireplace. He was no boyscout so starting a fire was rather alien to him, so he waited until the others were near. "All set!" he called, hoping Ebony or Alex would hear him.
Rivener lifted an eyebrow in confusion. Something about storms? What the hell was Zul talking about? The Scorpion's short temper was flaring already, thinking that his question was being avoided, but the Demon quelled that fire instantly by stroking at Riv's cheek, offering those sweet little words of affection.
When Zul asked what Riv was doing here in turn, the Sigel didn't even think to mention that the Demon hadn't given a reply. He just smirked. "I came because Aphi said he was going to meet Alex about something. I figured you'd be around too, so I wanted to come. To see you. ...Do you smell something?" Riv hugged Zul closer, holding the Demon up and willingly bearing almost all the floating torso's weight. He frowned and looked around. "Smells like something's on fire or something."
A small voice reminded him of something Alex had said, but Rivener hadn't been paying all that much attention to the humans prattling. He shrugged, figuring it wasn't important anyway.

Before she could move further towards the back patio or even acknowledge the chef's words, Aphismet had gone and returned with the wood already. Grey eyes blinked at him blankly. Did he get faster or was she just slower due to all the worry and guilt she was feeling right then? Guilt because she was letting all of the Lab down, not just these two guardians. They'd entrusted her with something valuable and precious. Yet, in less than a month she'd allowed her newborn to become a victim of sexual harassment and now she'd lost her. Ebony's mind wracked with how horrible a guardian she was and she grimaced slight as she began piling the logs into the hearth.
"Thanks mate." The Brit flashed him a soft, but grateful smile. It was a good thing she'd called him. When she didn't know how to be strong in a situation or was too muddle to think, Aphi always took the lead and reminded her how she needed to think and act. "I'll take care of the rest. You should go help Alex and I'll follow when I'm done."
The smoke was gradually starting to build in volume, circling just below the twin ribbons above it. Lightly it curled up, gently caressing along the trails as it moved its way up. Mmmm, so warm and smoky was the demon. The other, though slightly warm too, wasn't as appetizing and was just in the way. And that red! That horrible, horrible shade that plagued her dreams as well as her waking moments. Images of the fire Sigel interrupted her thought process as she snaked upwards. Suddenly Rivener wasn't Rivener anymore. And rather than gently hugging Zul, he was attacking the Raevan! Unforgivable! That was her warmth! Her sun! She wouldn't allow him to endanger it! The dark cloud billowed higher, looking to suffocate that insufferable enemy.

Alex kept herself busy on the porch, breathing in the chilled air with seared lungs. She didn't know if she could smell smoke or if the smell was just lingering in her sinus passage, which made her slightly useless for subtle scents. It had been a rather difficult couple of days - or had it been a week now? - and every whisper of leaves on the ground, every groan of empty branches made her jump or look twice over her shoulder.
Her green eyes rested briefly on the two Raevans canoodling, wondering what they were talking about. She was grateful they didn't really have any sense of urgency or worry yet, even if she was a bit jealous that they could just hang on each other with abandon. Alex gave a small smile at that, shaking her head and peering around the corner of the house - missing the sudden plume of smoke at her charge's base. "Need he--wow, done already? Jeez, Aphi, way to be efficient," she teased the white-haired man, pushing her errant ponytail back over her shoulder, trying to keep the atmosphere light and hopeful.
The demon's face slowly lit at the Sigel's words, expression settling back into the content possession of being the one Rivener desired to be with. There was no greater pleasure to him, to be wanted by his Scorpion. Zul reveled in his ownership, letting himself relax in the strong arms. He felt like a king--
He could feel the strange sensation of something cool on his ribbon about the time Rivener mentioned smoke. He caught the scent again, and he knew it well - the cold, brittle smell of smoke that he associated with Cordelia. "Stormy," came the purr of contentment, looking around, and finally downwards. He was surprised to find himself nearly consumed by a plume of smoke.
"There she is," he murmured plainly, as if to see the smoke of what should have been a Raevan was perfectly acceptable. One of his hands lowered, fingers ghosting over a portion of the smoke as though he were lightly touching his friend. "Stormy. Why are you hiding?" Zul looked into the smoke as if he could see the black-framed orbs of the same color - and maybe, in his sick mind, he could.

Aphismet grinned over at Alex, shrugging his shoulders. "It was just bringing in some wood, you girls make it sound like I was hiking eight miles for it!" With a final pat of his hand on Ebony's back, Aphismet got to his feet and joined Alex near the front porch. "We should look around some more, Ebs said. She'll be out as soon as the fire's going."
The chef lifted a hand to caress Alex's cheek briefly, smiling. "Let's look, then!" He straightened his back and harrumphed like he meant business, took the first step down... and frowned at the two Raevans in the driveway. "...Hey, what's that swirling around Riv and Zul?" Aphi's voice had a half-hopeful tone to it.
Rivener felt something tickle at his ribbon and he glanced down when Zul muttered something else about "Stormy". The Demon pulled free of Rivener's hold to bend down and caress the weird smoke that was swirling there... Confused, Riv tilted his head and raised an eyebrow. What the hell was going on?
Before the Sigel could formulate any questions, lips already parted to do so, the smoke billowed up. It seemed to be trying to crawl up his body or something, heading for his face. Riv flailed, backing away from Zul so both strong leathery wings could beat down in an effort to create enough wind to dispell the weird stuff. "HEY! Hey, what the ********> Riv tried pushing away at it with his hands as well, turning his head this way and that to keep his mouth free.
Him and smoke apparently did not mix!
"Zul, Jeez, if this is your pet Stormy or whatever, call it offa me! Get OFF me!!" All the wind seemed to be doing was creating swirls and eddies in the smoke: it was surprisingly resilient, sticking together in one mostly-coherent form. The Scorpion swore and flapped his wings, dashing around the driveway in tight, fast circles to try and lose the damn stuff.

The purr of her nickname and the gentle way Zul tried to touch her vaporous form was somewhat comforting, enough to distract the smoke momentarily from her true target. A grayish black tendrils twisted towards his outstretched hand and curling around it as if she was reaching her own hand out to him in answer. He was always so good to her, so warm and caring.
Cordelia would have gone to the demon completely had Rivener not brought her attention back to him. But she couldn't see the scorpion, the virus effectively blinding her eyes to his true form. All she saw was a scarlet white Sigel laughing menacingly like her efforts were pathetic. That flared her anger and the fumes drew away from Zul, pooling together around and before the Raevan. It was beginning to take some sort of logical form, but not that of the normally gentle femme. In a shape resembling more of a giant snake, the cloud gave a loud hiss before launching itself at her presumed danger. She would not allow him to hurt anyone else! Most especially Zul!
If Ebony had been paying more attention to the two male Raevans cuddling in her driveway then she probably would have wondered why the hell they were just standing around wasting space and not helping. And she would have most definitely spied the billowing smoke slowly swirling around them. But no, the violaceous woman was too busy worrying about her poor ward and also wondering where the hell the matches were.
Suddenly the scent of smoke was overwhelming and Ebony couldn't help, but frown at the logs in front of her. She hadn't even lit the match yet, so the smell shouldn't be so strong. It wasn't until a familiar hiss graced her ears did she understand. "Cordelia?!" she shouted before dashing back outside, the logs in the fireplace forgotten.

The laughter that returned Aphismet's grin was good-humored, shrugging her shoulders and winking at the white-haired man. "Take it with a grain of salt, maybe we just like having a big, strong guy around." Alex tilted her head against his cool fingers, her smile softening beneath her gentle gaze. He really was good to her - to everyone, it seemed, and it only made her heart swell that much more for the chef.
"Let's," she agreed with a nod, walking around to his opposite side and preparing to descend the stairs with him. At his remark, her head snapped up, pupils suddenly constricted to small pricks of black in the pools of green. "Cordelia!" she called at the same time as Ebony, turning around in time to see Ebony vaulting out of the house. By her side, the woman ran with the distressed Guardian, not sure what the hell they were going to do, but damnit if they wouldn't try everything in their power! "How can we stop her?" she asked Ebony as they approached the wildly flying Scorpion. What would stop a Basilisk?!
His first reaction cued him in that the 'something bad' was getting worse - he wanted to laugh. Watching the Sigel flee from smoke was almost hysterical to the ill-tempered demon. Zul bit the inside of his mouth to keep the mirth from spilling over, although he did have to cover his mouth with his hand. On the heels of his amusement was outrage - a cold, dangerous anger that his Rivener was being threatened. His head spun with the effort to keep up with his own thoughts, which was no easy feat just then.
Logically, he knew he couldn't hurt Cordelia. Not only was she smoke, but she was his in that she liked him, she trusted him. Failing the Scorpion and the Basilisk was not an option! But what could he do, sick and weak as he was? Zul slowly lowered his hand and crossed his arms over his chest, his eyes beginning to lose focus and his head lulling downards. What can I do? he asked himself, helplessness settling into his floating form, his body almost seeming to shut down. Eyes nearly devoid of blue turned back up to watch the madness, his expression slack. The demon stopped moving all together, waiting.
