Mine, please make her stop. She's been creeling in my ears all morning, Your Shamth has a headache . . .
L'pin chuckled at just how downright pathetic his mighty Blue seemed, his laugh good-nature but still at the expense of his lifemate. Shamth's strife and his complaints had almost everything to do with the blob of Green that had herself firmly mounted on L'pin's head, her tiny claws in his hair.
The firelizard egg from a few sevendays ago had long hatched, producing the little creature L'pin affectionately called Rinel. She brought a new wave of excitement and amusement into his life thanks in part to how she always seemed to get a rise out of Shamth.
I'm sorry, she's just excited and young. When we get to the springs I'll send her off, and focus on giving you the scrubbing of a lifetime. How does that sound?
L'pin stroked what he could of Shamth's massive neck, pleased at the contented rumble that rolled beneath his fingertips. This was the first time in a long time that the pair had managed to get some time off from work, their loads having been doubled since the day they skipped out to join Tethis at the beach. Who knew it wasn't the right thing to do? Not L'pin and Shamth, anyway.
As the pair descended in and Shamth quickly made a beeline for the water his rider took his time undressing, careful to keep all of his possessions in a neater pile then last time. He was still missing a belt, but it wasn't like his life depended on getting it back. Atop his head Rinel shrieked, her eyes whirling bright blue/green.
"I know, I know. Let's get in before Shamth decides to let his mood sour."

"Yes, alright, I understand. You found it, finders keepers... but why do you need it?" Kannaroth. She was such a little hoarder. At this rate he was going to need a gold rider's weyr by the time he was a full rider to store all the things his lifemate found. Some had genuinely just been lying around, some others had been lying around with their owner close by but distracted. This belt was just the latest in a long line of things that Kannaroth would insist on keeping because it was hers now.
"I could chew it," the green said after a few moments of thought. "Or I could wear it as an adornment when I get bigger, or I could use it to decorate, or you could wear it."
Y'kar looked down at his lifemate, belt held carefully in her mouth, and sighed. "I'm not wearing something that somebody might recognise as theirs Kanna, no way no how." It was one thing for Bad Girl Kannaroth to be trotting around with a belt that didn't belong to her, but quite another for him to use it. "This looks like a decent spot," he said, coming to a halt by the water's edge, not too far from where L'pin had left his clothing, "you go on in, I'll join you in a moment."
Kannaroth made an indistinct noise of assent around the belt and trotted into the water, her prize still delicately clasped between her fangs. If she was going to wear or display it someday, she didn't want it covered in tooth marks!
((Up to you whether or not the belt is his, I just thought I'd throw the possibility out there XD))

Mine, another dragon and rider are here.
Shamth's voice broke the silence that had been drifting inside the Rider's head, his whole body relaxing in the warmth of the waters. Rinel seemed to have calmed down as well and was resting against the exposed part of his lap, the man not going too far out into the waters. He may not have minded a soak every now and then, but he still disliked public bodies of water. Blech.
The words of his dragon did not sound like their usual warning of someone else coming, but more or less like he was being haughty - amused. While Shamth almost always thought himself the best dragon, clearly because he belong to L'pin, it was apparent in his voice that he knew he was superior to whomever had just arrived.
It is that failure of a Green, from the most recent clutch. Kannaroth.
L'pin brow furled downwards at his dragon's words, as he knew good and well now the reason why Shamth felt so superior. Faranth, maybe even Whers felt superior to those three Greens. L'pin didn't know any of them personally, nor did he know their riders, but he had been there when the hatching occurred and had witnessed all the events. Such mindless slaughter, the sounds of disapproval from all the dragons and riders in the Weyr.
But that was beside the point, he was here now to soak. Rinel seemed to agree with him for a moment or two, though suddenly her eyes shot open and she dashed upwards from his lap. He sudden movement gave the man a reason to wince in pain from a small gash, his slightly upset gaze following the flit as she quickly moved over to a small Green entering the waters.
"So that's Kannaroth, hm?"
His voice was loud, judging.
And your belt.

"Blue," Kannaroth said with more than a little sneer in her mental voice, "you may tell Yours that I give him ten out of ten for observation, and that he shall have a sweetie for being such a clever boy." Lovely. She hadn't wanted to have to talk to any idiots, but it looked like she had no choice in the matter. Still, she was pleased to see the little firelizard, and she greeted the other green-hued creature with a friendly croon.
Y'kar, who had just finished stripping to his underwear, turned to face the speaker. "Yea," he said cautiously as he moved to the water's edge, "that's Kannaroth." For a moment he hesitated, but the scrawny youth swiftly seemed to come to the decision that he was not to be driven off and waded into the water. "Who're you then?" he asked of the the strange man, not quite challengingly but certainly not in a friendly manner. The tone of voice he had used pleased Y'kar not at all, and it didn't please his persona either. His persona, however, looked warily defiant of the man's apparent opinion. Internally, Y'kar narrowed his eyes and wondered how he could knock this b*****d down a peg or two.

"Hm, meant nothing by it so relax already. I wasn't able to catch the hatching thanks to something or another popping up, so I hadn't seen her before."
L'pin shrugged, inwardly sighing at the nature of Y'kar. Why did most (read: almost all) the riders he came upon lately have chips on their shoulders and sticks up their asses? Not to mention they were all brats that were barely fresh from the sands. Faranth, what kinds of kids was this place producing to have them all so....attitude based?
Though from what L'pin had heard through rumors, naturally ones he had to overhead since no one would come to him directly, the Green dragon who seemed pleased with his firelizard supposedly was a failure of a dragon, which is turn caused eyes to look at the rider with the same scorn.
"I'm L'pin, of Blue Shamth. You probably won't see me very often, nor will you really need to, so don't go jumping do my throat. I'm just here because my dragon wanted to soak and I'm tired of being the errand boy for a Weyr that is ungrateful."
Runt, you may tell yours that while I may not be able to harm him, you are more than fair game.
The sneer was matched in Shamth's tone, his eyes moving from the comforting blye/green they had been towards the dangerous red. L'pin seldom saw the dragon's eyes this color, and he seemed to be ignoring them for the most part.

Kannaroth snorted around the belt, choosing to ignore the blue's words. She was not frightened by him, mostly because she was pretty sure he was bluffing. He might give her a cuff she supposed, but nothing worse, he wouldn't dare.
"...Oh." Y'kar blinked, and then abruptly looked rather abashed. "Sorry, L'pin, I kind of have a prominent defensive reaction. Glad to meet you, I hope I've not given too bad a first impression. We're here for the same reasons, other than the messenger bit of course. Why's the Weyr so set against you two, if you don't mind me asking?" Maybe it was because of the red that was showing in Shamth's eyes; the blue seemed to be as aggressive as Kannaroth and her sisters.
"Be careful," he warned his lifemate, "come closer to me so he'd be in danger of hurting me if he lashed out."
"You worry too much," Kannaroth informed him though she did acquiesce to his request when Y'kar reached out a hand to her. When she arrived beside him, he stroked her neck fondly, and so breaking off the confrontation was worthwhile from her point of view. "I still don't think he would have attacked me," she felt the need to insist even though she was happy with her decision, "he and his rider would have been most severely punished. Maybe not as much as if I was any other dragons t though," she added with a mental snort.

Get protected while you can, failure. Move away, and I will show you I am not a dragon of empty words.
Shamth also moved closer to L'pin, his massive head resting above the man who seemed content to keep casually soaking. It would be impossible for him to not feel the aggression that leaked out every pore in the Blue's being. but if it bothered him at all he was doing a fine job of looking like it did not. It was sad to think that he may have been so well used to it that it didn't phase him at all.
"No need to apologize, kid, it's understandable. Having to learn to make excuses for your dragon can make anyone irritable, though from the looks of it I bet you're like me and could give a flying wherry about it all."
L'pin reached his hand up and Shamth happily obliged, lowering his his great jaw down enough that the tips of L'pin's fingers could gently stroke them. His eyes stayed red despite the clear and obvious affection being exchanged between the pair, and what was worse is his glare did not seem to leave the Green. He hadn't said anymore since his secondary threat to her, feeling that even speaking to something so useless would damage his credit as a fine Blue.
"As for why the Weyr is so set again us, let's just say that as a pair he and I have done some things that didn't end well. I can't even join a Wing thanks to this guy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. We're better left alone."
It was a roundabout way of saying 'Shamth is dangerous and aggressive towards other dragons...and people', but L'pin would never let those words pass his lips. To him, Shamth was perfect and never did anything wrong - even when he knew that was a lie. He'd defend his dragon, just as he knew this kid would his.
Meanwhile the little Green flit still seemed to be floating around the area, her loud shrieks and trumpets indicating that she was happy to be near this new person. Shamth rumbled his disapproval, and L'pin could only chuckle.
"That mess floating near your Kannaroth is Rinel, my Green."

"Then I shall stay here," Kannaroth responded offhandedly, keeping her eyes on the flitt as opposed to the threatening blue. "I do not appreciate being called a failure by the way; do you expect me to have learned to fly in less than a month? I am too young to be called success, but I am also too young to be called a failure... Shame we can't say the same for you, humm?" Useless. Ah well, the firelizard was nice; she informed the sweet little beast that it was very pretty, and that she was glad they had met one another, very glad indeed!
Y'kar grinned at L'pin and nodded. "Yea, you've got that right. She's an aggressive little beast, and she insists on insulting everyone, but she's mine and I wouldn't change her for the world... I'll try to keep Kannaroth from being too rude to Shamth though," he patted the green's neck, smiling at L'pin still, though his eyes wandered warily to the aggressive blue every so often. "She's not got much sense of judgment yet," he said, mentally awarding himself a 'Wingleader Ob'vious' point, "but I'm sure she'll get some more as she gets older."

Talk bigger when you're not hiding by Yours, Runt. And I am not a failure, at least my birth was welcomed.
There was a hiss.
No one can say the same of you, or those others that dare call themselves anything.
There was a rumble that was the dragon equivalent of laughter, and L'pin looked up with mild shock on his face. He'd never heard Shamth produce any sound other than hissing or the occasional croon for affection, so this was new. And amusing.
Having fun?
Yes. And she still has your belt, you know.
L'pin had forgotten all about that, instead his focus on getting the kid to not act so hostile. When he did turn his attention tot he item in the Green's mouth, he let out a laugh of his own.
"So it is mine! And here I thought Rinel had taken it somewhere."
He didn't explain the sudden outburst, though at the mention of her name the Green flit trumpted and dashed over to L'pin's side, her landing rough atop his head. She was sending him all kind of happy images, mostly involving Kannaroth, and he did his best to sort them out.
"Rinel says she loves your Kannaroth, or at least I hope that's what she's saying."

"Talk bigger when you have more going for you than superior size. What a brave dragon you are, threatening a dragonet," Kannaroth retorted easily. "As for the welcome we received, I hardly see how it matters. I will not allow my success or failure as a dragon to be defined by my popularity, that is foolishness on a grand scale. People may think whatever they like of me, and many think I am a failure, yet I have the last laugh because I know that none of them have a mind one iota as brilliant as my own." Let him think of a reply to that one beyond 'grr I'm big and scary'. Just another idiot in a world full of them, annoying - and in this case worth being wary of - but not a major problem in the end.
"Oh? I'm glad she likes her," Y'kar said with a smile, "Kannaroth likes her too... err... what's yours?" he went on, casting around. "Oh!" his eyes alighted on Kannaroth, and the belt she still held in her mouth. "That's yours? She found it on the ground somewhere over there," he gestured vaguely off to the left. "I guessed somebody must have lost it... Err... Kanna? How about giving L'pin his belt back?"
The young green looked displeased. "Finders keepers. Besides, how do we know he's telling the truth? Maybe he just likes the belt and wants it."
"Come on, let's have it," Y'kar reached out towards the belt, but his lifemate turned her head away to keep it out of reach. "Please," he said aloud, "come on, you haven't got any use for it." This was vaguely entertaining; he was pretty sure Kannaroth was willing to relent on the belt point, but only after playing around a bit. She didn't want anyone to think that she gave into Hers that easily.
"I'll give it to you," Kannaroth confirmed, "but not yet, and you'd better find me something nice to replace it."
That was fair enough; either he'd buy something, take something, or let her take something... Though 'let' was hardly the word; it wasn't as if he could stop her doing as she wanted, nor did he wish to. Whatever she wanted, in the end, he would go with.

. . . . I will wait. You will not be small for much longer, and that day? I shall delight at rendering you asunder.
There was not a trace of doubt in Shamth's tone, so clear was he that there was no way he could be joking, or even producing an empty threat. Should Kannaroth ever be away from Hers, should Shamth be near, there would not be peace. He even rumbled in delight, his eyes flashing the blue of happiness with his red.
"If she wants it, she can keep it. I'd already given up on finding it again, so I don't need it."
L'pin shrugged his shoulders at the display before him, not really needing that belt so badly after all. He wasn't the type of guy to just demand something like that back, not when he had others back in his weyr, and it wasn't like he was really attached to the item or anything. It had been a normal belt gotten from the tailors, so no sentimental attachment.
It was just like him too to let something go easily, as he'd often relented to his older and younger siblings while back at the hold. L'pin wasn't the type to argue unless Shamth was involved anyway.
"But as for Rinel, I think your Kannaroth is the first dragon she's really liked so much. Usually she backs up and gives them some space, but she went right to her."
From his head Rinel trumpted, the sound loud and painful.

Kannaroth grinned a very nasty grin. "I look forward to seeing you try," she replied with a definite hint of chuckle. He would always be much bigger than her, which made it and unfair fight which made him a bully and meant she didn't need to have any scruples either, not that she would have let equality keep her from pressing home every advantage. When she was bigger, she decided, when he tried to come for her, she would not be alone. Together she, Roseth and Nellath would take him to pieces. Theirs' would not be the first move, but it would certainly be the last.
"Oh, really?" Y'kar stopped grabbing at the belt and offer L'pin a grateful smile. "Thanks, I'd have had a terrible time trying to get it back. She was trying to invoke the law of 'finders keepers' on me... Even though she's aggressive with humans, she seems to have a way with firelizards. She loves them and they love her, I guess."
"Well quite," Kannaroth replied, quite pleased that she was allowed to retain the belt, "and they're useful too. We'll have some of our own eventually, I'll enjoy that, and I'll put them to good use!"
He had no doubt of that at all. The Weyr would probably experience an outbreak of thefts once Kannaroth had a few flitts under her control all the time. Wild ones would sometimes do as she asked, even ones bonded to other people, but Y'kar was sure that she would be best at handling any Impressed to him. Her own little firelizard army. Had he not been on her side, Y'kar would probably have been very worried by that idea.

"Hey, no worries. I'd already gotten a replacement belt earlier in the sevenday, and it's not like I needed it for flight or anything. The two of us aren't really allowed to go anywhere. Right, Shamth?"
Shamth had oddly gone silent after a few moments and an unsettling feeling came over L'pin, one that made him shift a bit in the warm waters. His dragon wasn't exactly the chatty type, always blathering on and on about useless things, but he wasn't the kind to suddenly go silent either. L'pin knew him to be something of a thinker when the situation arose . . . but such thoughts spent in the Blue dragon were at the very least nothing anyone would want.
Shamth?
His face creased as he reached out to touch his dragon both physically and mentally, for once a little nervous at the silence. Even though L'pin could ignore the biting remarks Shamth would say when others were around, he could not ignore when the remarks simply stopped.
I am here. Do as you please.
The Blue rumbled reassuringly, and L'pin gave a soft sigh that included him placing a hand on his chest with relief. Silly dragon, don't scare him like that!
But he wouldn't dwell on worry for much longer, he was entertaining someone.
"I'd give you Rinel if I could, since she seems to taken with Kannaroth, and I doubt that Shamth would have any objections. The only problem is you'd probably have to come back every day to get her from me when she comes in at night to roost in my hair."
It was a fond poke at the Green's location atop his head, her own small wedge picking up at the mention of her name. She gave a loud screech of pleasure, eyes whirling blue.

"You should be careful, whatever you're saying," Y'kar commented to his dragon, looking faintly nervous as he stroked her head and looked over at the much larger blue. "He could do serious damage if he caught you away from me." Would the angry creature go so far? He guessed so, there had to be a pretty good reason to prevent a healthy dragon from joining a wing.
"Don't worry," Kannaroth replied with an internal smile, "I'm no fool, I'll watch myself. I'd rather it never came to a physical confrontation but if it does... Well, if he backs me into a corner, I'll fight, and hope my sisters arrive swiftly." Very swiftly, the last thing she wanted was to be made into minemeat, or injured so badly that she would never fly.
"Ahhaha, ha," Y'kar turned his attention back to the conversation, an air of a person trying to repress nervousness about him. "Well, thanks for the thought. I'm sure Kannaroth will be happy to come and see Rinel when she has the time, or maybe she'll call Rinel to come see her and your hair will get a break from being made into a nest." He did not entirely have to fake his wariness of the blue, despite her assurances his worry for Kannaroth remained. Would this savage beast really attack her just because he disliked her? Shards, he knew every dragon was supposedly special, but this one ought to be chained up like a watchwher rather than wandering loose. If only he had the ear of somebody high up to recommend such a step; it would be for the safety of all, but especially for the safety of Kannaroth.

"I wouldn't mind letting Kannaroth come to visit either, or we can just find a place for them to meet up at. It probably would be easier for her to just call Rinel away, I doubt that either of us would even notice she was gone...save for the quiet. Little thing loves to make noises as soon as silence sets in around her."
It was true that she did, for every time there seemed to be even the slightest lapse in conversation Rinel took it upon herself to either bugle or screech. If he wasn't deaf already L'pin would soon be, but by the look on his face it seemed like he was already pretty close to adapting to her sounds. He was just that kind of guy to adapt to things instead of telling them off, if that something happened to belong to him anyway. Items in the possession of others? Fair game.
Above L'pin Shamth remained silent, now and then a pleased rumble issuing forth to indicate that he was indeed paying attention. He probably was plotting something as far as his Blue mind would allow him to, which was fairly decent all things considered. He wasn't as smart as a Gold or Bronze and lacked their memory, but things like general feeling would not escape his grasp when needed.
"Man, Shamth seems rather quiet tonight. Usually he's a bit more chatty, I wonder if he's being shy in the presence of a lady. We don't get to be around many Greens, we're usually bossed into a position by a Bronze."
