Intro:
Contests are a big part of pokemon ,so big, they even have a good portion of recet anime episodes and characters focus on them

they are mostpartly exactly like a gym battle except their go in tiers and each tier has several aspects:

in gen 3 R/S/E contests only had Visual rating and move performances

however: In gen 4 D/P/Pl Contests got a face lift in the visual, where participants now dress up their pokemon, gained a dance section and retained the move section

Contest Trainers are in-anime called Coordiantors, and often in anime Contests also include battles in place fo the move performances

MAJOR: this FAQ will not gaurnetee your victory, even if you follow word-for-word as over half the cotnest is random-luck

Post 2 - Visual cotnest Advice

2a Poffins, natures and conditions
So you seek victory anda ribbon? well Pokemon have "Conditions" or, Contest-only Stats, each based on certain Stats for battle,
Cool Pokemon are often high physical attackers like Scizor
Cute pokemon are often those younger and faster pre-evolved or not-fully evolved forms (Ie cyndaquil or quilava)
Smart are often special defensive walls, as in Claydol
Tough are physcially defensive tanks like Aggron
and Beauty-based poemon like Milotic often have high special attack

HOWEVER through Poffins, any pokemon can be any condition
Poffins are hand-makeable in all three games, they require one player at minimum and a berry, up to four players may make them, and the higher count of players, the better the result but more uncertain the effects

Poffins usually have two flavors, and thus increase two condition at once, soem however only have oneflavor only increasing that condition
the condtions and matching falvors are as follows
cool = Spicy,
Cute = Sweet,
Tough = Sour,
Smart = Bitter,
Beauty = Dry.

Natures also effect a pokemon's willingness to eat poffins
Adamant natures love spicy but hate dry, this is deicernable by their battle Stats as Adamant increase ATK and lowers SPATK, which ATK is for Spicy, and SPATK is for Dry

Hardy, Quirky Serious and so on are exceptions, they will eat any flavor without question.

Not paying attention to nature can limit how many poffin a pokemon will eat, a Bold Pokemon will eat many Sour but wll eventuall refuse to eat if feed to many Spicy Poffins

As with the above, a Sour-Spicy or Spicy-Sour poffin would merely be normal to the Bold Pokemon.

feeding poffins is a key to victory in visualls as it alone will allow you to greatly take an early lead in normal and great ranks, Ultra and Master however focus moreso on Acceesories and Poffins together


2b Accessories and themes

Accessories, wih pfofins back ng them up, pave the way to victory in Super Contests during Visual Sessions, however, they accessory cant just be randomly dumped, it must be within a range of your pokemon to be counted, usually this range is determined by the accessory in question.

For the Visual Contest, depending on the category they name, certain accessories will give you higher or lower points. You can shut your DS when they name the category, decide which items you want to put on your pokemon, and then resume.
a useful list to help you would be:
Bulbapedia accssories list
in normal ranks you havefive accessory slots, and 60 seconds.
Ingreat ranks you have 10 slots and 60 seconds
Ultra you have 15 and 60 seconds
and Master ranks you have 20 slots and 60 seconds

---once you win the five normal ranks an easy theme is "the created" as each accessory given for passing a rank adds High points to this theme

You may also choose background, but this takes time, so dont focus on it, instead focus on your accessories

Once dressed up, your pokemon will be displayed, this display will have heartpop up form he audience, if you can count fast, you can see how many points you and your foes got, if your's outwieghed the others', even by one heart, then you are leading the Visual

But dont get cocky...the dance floor is a struggle all it's own...

POST 3 DANCE CONTEST

Dancing pokemon in contests is difficult, heck i'm a natural coordinator and i have trouble on the dance floor.


The dances are so diffcult due to two namely reasons: Speed of Song, and Control Reaction

there are different color bars on the bottom, sometimes these bars, when hit properly, will give excellents or if random luck is agaisnt you, give missses even though the same color bar previously was an excellent

the idea is to, when in the back, try to hit the notes for Good-level replies
and when dnacing, fluster your foes by moving differently each time

Also dances each take two turns for each pokemon, so make sure each nmove is different than the last
---it may be worthwile to do two of te same move, but do this sparingly,
---also some in-game foes do all of one note, this is great for you when they do it, but bad if you do it

depending upon type and upon rank will determine your song
Normal ranks only have 3 moves used twice, versus every other rank having 4 used twice
Ultra and Master the music begins to vary both in speed and sound, flusterng you, a fact made on purpose by the devs so you'll keep trying

the dance floor can make you or break you, trust me, but if it does break you, following my next post may just save you
