Ngaran had only managed to bring a small sprout of a grape plant with him, sequestered away into a nice pot that somehow managed to survive the trip. He had weaseled his way outdoors, and now was taking care of the small plant, transferring it into a much better container with the proper soil.

"Hmm, it's too dry. Needs some water and maybe a bit more clay in there..." Ngaran grumbled idly, smiling as he procured the suggested materials. With luck, the little sprout would begin to grow and flourish, and he could at least have a reminder of his grapes at home. The boorish Candidate had been in a state of anxiety until he got a message from his favorite crony stating that his grapes were being well taken care of, and now he was relaxing pleasantly on a small boulder, using a larger one as a table upon which he was transplanting the grape vine. He was too busy paying attention to his work to notice anybody approaching.

Yulu hadn't approached, more or less she was standing nearby and watching. Whatever it was that this youth was doing had her attention, or at least a sliver of her curiosity, and Yulu cautiously took a few strides closer to see better. It normally wasn't like her to act so timid, but this kid had a reputation that had proceeded him. Whether or not he knew this was up for debate, but Yulu had heard enough gossip to know to be careful.

Still, she thought he liked rather funny with his plant like that, fussing over it the way a rider would their dragon. It made her snicker, though she quickly turned her head to the side should the boy look over and see that it was here who was laughing at the ridiculousness of the situation.

Oh, Ngaran was sure that this little grape vine would do we--hey, who just snickered? The burly Candidate looked around before locking in on Yulu, giving what appeared to be a he at first glance a smoldering look before going back to his work. He had no idea what that kid's problem was, but if he started laughing at his vine again, there would be some trouble.

...though, that's not to say he could punch the other. However much he'd like to, Ngaran couldn't engage in any acts of violence, as it would further damage his position as a Candidate and may even get him removed from the Weyr, something that he didn't want--there was still so much to do here. Maybe he could even set up a decent vineyard here, with enough time.

Finally, Ngaran's temper started to rise as he began to think about why Yulu may have snickered at him, if 'he' had been the culprit at all.

"What's your problem, eh? Haven't seen anybody transplantin' a vine now, have ya?" Ngaran growled, turning to face Yulu with a frown on his face.

"I didn't say anything, don't go getting your underclothes pulled up or something."

Yulu wasn't the type to snap at someone first, but woe to anyone when she decided to snap back. Years of having a poison tongue laced with honey were at her advantage and she was going to use them. At worse this kid would only yell at her, not strike, since either of them getting into an altercation would ruin their candidacy.

"Since when has a person been unable to sneeze when they're outside, hm? Going to deny me natural body functions?"

She figured calling it a sneeze might have been a good way to play it all off, since a snort could have been a sneeze in disguise or something. This boy didn't look too bright, even if he looked huge compared to her.

"I know a snicker when I hear one, and that was no sneeze." Ngaran grumbled before turning back to his vine. He watered the small vine with an uncharacteristically tender expression on his face and patted the small, budding leaves with a smile. "There now, all better." he whispered, temporarily forgetting that Yulu was there, if only for a moment.

When it came back to him, he glanced over his shoulder, just the trace of a blush on his face, barely visible under his tan.

"Hm, you remind me of somebody with that mouth of yours." Ngaran said with a shrug. It was true, too--Yulu sounded so much like his favorite crony right then that it was almost scary.

Yulu snickered again at the boy's actions, not caring this time if he knew it was her or not. He already seemed to have a nasty attitude and hadn't bought her lie, so there was no need to pretend or stand on ceremony with him anymore. Already an opinion of a jerk was sliding into the back of her mind, though it was mixed with feelings that this person was more of a pillow then a full mattress in terms of bark and bite.

Hey, it made sense to her.

"You know oddly enough I get that a lot. I must be that type of guy to just remind people of others without ever having done or said anything to them."

She leaned back a bit and crossed her arms, her stance wide.

Ooh, was that one pushing it. Ngaran glared over his shoulder at Yulu as he heard her laugh at his tending of the vine. If anything ticked him off, it was people messing with his vines. He reined in his temper with a snort, gently biting the tip of his tongue to silence the quite nasty retort he had prepared.

"Nah, you remind me of a...hm. An acquaintance, to put it somewhat better." Ngaran paused before giving up tending to the vine for now and turning to face Yulu. "What's your name, anyway?"

Well, not that this one was likely to give him their name, Ngaran reasoned. Still, it was worth a shot, just to see if Yulu was maybe anything like Likoss. Shards, she even stood like him, except he always had that defiant tilt to his chin that sometimes mad Ngaran want to slap him.

"Give me your name first, and then I'll give you mine. That's an action called 'common courtesy' you know. I'd think anyone who wants to be treated seriously would know that, more so if they're coming from a Craft."

Yulu wagered this boy was Craftbred based on the fact he'd had a vine of some kind and was fawning over it like a Weyrling to their Dragonet. She'd seen similar looks from others who had come from the Halls, and she wondered if her own face could produce something so girly while she was working. Probably not, as Yulu had been told she always looked angry while treating people.

Not a bad thing.

"Well?"

Oh, this one's a spitfire. Ngaran appreciated the fact that Yulu didn't seem to be one of those little scampering weaklings he'd had to deal with. They had grown tiresome after the first few intimidations, then just downright annoying. And she was holding her ground, for one thing!

"The name's Ngaran." He crossed his arms with an infuriating grin. "That enough 'common courtesy' for ya?"

"Close enough, but it looses its charm when you have to explain you're using it. I'm called Yulu."

Yulu stayed where she stood, her arms still crossed and her face still in the general expression of disinterest. When Ngaran actually gave this annoying grin back to her she could only sigh and roll her eyes, still thinking he was not all there in the head. It seemed like Yulu was unlucky enough to be running into a lot of them lately.

"I take it based on the fact you're not at lessons that you're a Candidate like me, skipping out."

"Alright, Yulu, I'd say it was a pleasure...." Ngaran smirked before turning back to his vine, gently plucking off a dead leaf with a frown. The little thing hadn't really handled the travel here so well, though that didn't surprise him. He hadn't been really optimistic about the vine's chances, but it was doing better than he had initially thought.

"Well o' course. I didn't feel like goin' to lessons today, though I'll probably pay for that tomorrow. But in any case, gettin' a day off isn't all that bad, is it?"
PostPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:34 pm

"I suppose, though in the end they'll punish those who show up less over those who do more, even when they become riders. Or rather, a dragon wouldn't like someone who couldn't properly care for it. They'd be the one to suffer more than either of us would, though I shouldn't have a problem. I've been raised with dragons, I know what to do. You, on the other hand, probably not."

It was fair enough for Yulu to make such an assumption, considering the guy before her and his obsession with the plant in his hands over his lessons. Certain people just couldn't leave their trades behind even at the chance of something new, and he certainly looked the type.

"You pegged me there. I'm a Vintner, and that's what I know how to do pretty well." Ngaran paused. "I do plan on goin' tomorrow, and for the other lessons and all that, but this little thing isn't doin' so good. I figured it needed a little bit of extra lookin' after to make sure it'll make it."

It was at this point that Ngaran realized that he had just so happened to have revealed the fact that he was a complete sucker when it came to his vine. He flushed and hunched over the vine so as to block Yulu's view, scowling deeply. Shards if he was going to let her see the fact that he did like the vine and his craft! Ngaran mentally kicked himself--he was going soft. Before he was Searched, he would've never said that, not even to Likoss. He came pretty close to facepalming right there, but he reined it in.

"So then, why are you skippin', eh?"
PostPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 5:10 pm

Ouch, touche. He had her there for not being at her lessons, though Yulu quickly snapped back.

"Who said I'm really skipping? I was asked by the Candidatemaster to see if I could round up those last few people who always seem to be missing from his lessons. You happened to be a face I didn't recognize so I assumed you to be someone who's never properly attended a lesson. You need to leave your dying weed behind and get moving, or else you'll find yourself on the wrong end of some heavy tasks."

It's not like Yulu was telling the truth, she was mostly blowing smoke up the other's rear. It still sounded quite good considering she didn't even flinch as she spoke, a Turn or two of learning to lie coming in handy, and Yulu smirked as she waited for the boy to respond.

Ngaran had actually been listening quite patiently until Yulu insulted his vine. It was then that he redirected his attention once more to the girl, "Weed? I'll have you know that this vine'll give some real nice red wine when it matures." That was crossing a line there, insulting a man's livelihood. This vine was a pretty good one, anyway, not that she would know that. "D'you even know what a weed is, anyway? I mean, really, I'd think your pretty little head would be all tangled up in thoughts of becomin' a dragonrider an' being the Candidatemaster's golden girl." All said with a hefty dose of sarcasm, in any case.

He wasn't too sure if Yulu was actually telling the truth, but he was at least going to give her a hard time before he did trundle off to the lessons.
