I'm kind of a newb when it comes to this subject- what's the advantage of "milled" parts over sheet metal?
I take it that durability and reliability is a major factor?

Milled parts are made from solid pieces of steel, sheet metal is... sheet metal. Milled guns have been proven over time, stamped has yet to do so.

OberFeldwebel Milled guns have been proven over time, stamped has yet to do so. Bull s**t. The MG42 was stamped sheet metal. The M40 was stamped sheet metal. The Sten was stamped sheet metal. A lot of good firearms are stamped sheet metal.

It's expensive, heavy, and adds nothing to reliability or accuracy. Modern military firearms use either stamped sheet metal or composites.

It doesn't have to add to reliability or accuracy, though I say being less prone to destruction because of being tougher would add to reliability.

I wouldn't step on a stamped receiver, it'd just bend and ******** up the internals. An AR could take that pressure.

So, how do I tell if a gun's metal is milled?
I plan on getting an SKS, and it would be rather silly of me to get one with stamped metal, as it somewhat defeats the point of the gun being durable.

Do milling marks look like the marks on the black metal of the following picture? EDIT: Not what the stamps on it, of course. The texture of the metal. I think the gray metal is sheet metal, though.
