Late night rant for you guys, stemming from a trending topic on Twitter '#backwhencartoons' or something liek that (the exact topic escapes me at the moment and I can't be bothered checking).
Anyway it got me thinking. Remember when cartoons no matter how simple had lessons we could learn from? Action cartoons had a certain quality that the kiddy shows of today lacked: A clear dichotomy between good and evil, an exploration of the dualities associated with the notions of victory of defeat, virtue and immorality. Another thing, the characters actually changed and grew during the progression of the series - one got to know them, even care about them at some point (just as is apparent in most anime). Shows like Gargoyles, Beast Wars, Batman, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... hell even s**t like Captain Planet and Johnny Quest.
And what about comedy cartoons? I miss the irreverent, barely politically correct edgy humour of cartoons like Rocko's Modern Life, Dexter's Laboratory and Invader Zim. The cartoons of yesterday had all those qualities, and more. They don't make them like they used to anymore, and it's unfortunate.
Now what are kids stuck with? Pansy shows about absolutely nothing, or repetitive crap like Ben 10 - or some stupid show based around bloody CARDS. I'm glad of the evolution from the stupidity of socially ignorant bullshit like the Flintsones or the Jetsons - but it seems that once again we're devolving, as per the theory of social Darwinism dictates.
Kids these days have become piss-weak, oversensitive little shits who are unprepared for the trials and tribulations of the real world. They lack the necessary preparation the cartoons of the late 80s up until the early 00's offered.
Hell, I'm glad I grew up watching anime most of the time...
Rant over.

I couldn't agree with you more! Every time I turn on the TV and I see all those ******** dumb a** meaningless shows on Cartoon Network -Oh excuse me, It's calledCN now- (WTF?) I get so damn angry. I remember growing up watching either classic cartoons, or classic anime! I remember getting mad because the main character made a dumb decision, then happy when the issue was resolved, and I remember thinking "Wow, I'm glad I'll never make a mistake like that because I know what'll happen if I do"
Veering off into another subject related to this one: TV in general has gone down the shitter-for the most part. Some good shows have survived but the majority of TV is made up of distasteful reality TV. Don't get me wrong, a few of them are downright hilarious but others are just a waste of time. Its a subject that most people avoid, for reasons that I don't fully understand but I just thought I'd bring it up. Thanks for listening to me babble.
biggrin
