Grace sniffed at a berry, eyeing it hungrily; she was close to the mountains now! It had taken her some time, but now it was time for breakfast... The berry looked ripe, but smells otherwise. Frowning, she stared at the berry, as if it would help sped up teh ripening process - ever since unripen berries gave her a stomachache, she had been more careful at choosing what she puts into her mouth. Once bitten, twice shy after all.

Giving it another sniff, the female Usdia took her chances; opening her mouth, she chomped down on the fruit. To her surprise, it was sour, an unriped berry through and through. Making a face, she spat it out quickly, giving a sigh.

Ranulf lay on his back in a pile of brown and gold leaves. He had been starring up at the sky, quietly thinking to himself as he attempted to spy shapes in the clouds above him. The sudden sound of someone spitting and sighing though made him jump, and with a loud rustle he quickly jumped to his hooves. “Who there?” He called out, fearful of the stories of skinwalkers his father had told him, and of the scars he had seen on him.

He crouched down, lowering his face to let his cream colored mane fall like a veil over it. He was attempting to camouflage himself in the browns and gold’s of the leaves he had gathered, colors he knew he possessed. He peeked though his mane, hazel eyes scanning the area quickly, too quickly to take in any detail at all.

Grace spun around when she heard a voice, her frown deepening. Trotting towards where she thought the voice had came from, her eyes widened at the sight of a huge pile of leaves that seemed rather... Odd. Her frown was quickly replaced by looks of curiosity, and she cautiously approached the pile. However, as she neared it, she could make out hair and... A pair of eyes? The Usdia mare froze, and she stood, rooted to the spot.

"Hello?" She finally spoke, standing a distance away from the mysterious pile of leaves, wondering if her eyes were playing tricks on her due to hunger. "Is someone there?"

A consistent color came up in the blur of brown and green as Ranulf’s eyes darted back and forth. He focused on it, his eyes stopping instantly on it; a mare. How long had it been since he had spoken to anyone his size other than his family, he couldn’t remember. As the mare drew closer and paused, starring directly at him, he began to grow nervous. He couldn’t be rude, but at this moment he honestly couldn’t see how he could not be, popping out of the leaves to greet the mare.

Slowly, as to attempt to not scare the mare, he lifted his head, silky strands falling to reveal his face. He smiled sheepishly, somewhat embarrassed by his own actions, his hiding. “Ranulf here…” He said quietly to her question. “Hello. Ranulf not mean to scare if Ranulf did.” He attempted to apologize to the mare.

"Hello there! I'm Grace," The female giggled, somewhat amused by the sight of the Usdia emerging from the pile of leaves; no wonder it looked odd! It wasn't really a pile of leaves at all! Sensing no treat, she boldly took a few steps towards him. At his comment, she proceeded to shake her head, a smile on her face as she spoke, "No, you didn't scare me, just surprised me, that's all!" She paused, glancing at the leaves around Ranulf before returning her attention to him, "But did I scare you?"

Giving a sigh of relief Ranulf stood from the pile, shaking his coat to rid his fur from any leaves that may be wanting to escape the pile he had so carefully collected. His sheepish smile turned to one of happiness; he hadn’t scared the mare. “No, Grrr…. Graaaa…. Sssseeee…” He paused, putting the sounds together in his head. “Graace,” he said after a moment, not quite getting it right, but he knew he would get it right eventually. “Not scare Ranulf. Ranulf afraid of…” He paused, looking about as if he didn’t want anyone to really hear the word. “Skinwalkers. Ranulf not want to be eaten.”

Grace blinked as Ranulf tried to say her name, beaming when he got it right - well, almost got it right. She frowned at the word, having heard the term a lot during her travels; of course, she hadn't met one herself, or she wouldn't be here. Giving a nod, she replied, her tone more serious than usual, "I don't think anyone wants to be eaten!" Just as she finished her sentence, a loud growl escaped her tummy, and she found herself blushing, although one probably can't see it through her cranberry colored pelt. Letting out a giggle, she added quickly, "Although I could use some food right about now! The berries I found weren't ready to be eaten..."

Ranulf looked to Grace worriedly. “Some time Ranulf think Brother want to be eaten…” He mumbled it quietly, only thinking on it for a moment before a growl could be heard. He jumped at the sound before he realized it was only Grace’s stomach. He chuckled at his own foolishness, a deep, rich laugh. “Gracee like grass? Or Grrace like flowers? Ranulf know where they are.” He offered. He wasn’t hungry, but he would never turn down a meal. “Berries good, but close to cold not many good Berries can be found. I not find them anyways…” He rambled on. He was still nervous, though he attempted to hide it.

The Usdia mare mused over the question; due to the abundance of berries found near her "home", she had been consuming them for a long time... Flowers and grass don't have the same strong aroma and sweet juice berries have, but they'll have to do for now! After all, everything is supposed to taste good when one is hungry, right? Making up her mind, she grinned, "I think I'm hungry enough to eat either of those... Just lead the way."

She tilted her head, eyes widening a little at the comment on berries, "No good berries! That's terrible! Well, if you ever come visit, I'll provide you with some of the forest's best berries!"

Ranulf nodded, turning quickly and trotted softly north towards the base of the mountain. “Cold coming. Berries need warm day to make really good, yes they do. It bad but there always be food. ” He paused though, looking back over his shoulder at Grace. “Visit?” He asked. He never left the forest, never left his home. He had always been afraid to. But if the berries were better than Raspberries the offer would be quite tempting.

"Ah yes, the cold..." A light frown appeared on her lips; although its less obvious in the forest away from the mountain, she could feel that its almost Fall again. Soon, it'll be winter; snow covered fields and ice coated rivers would again be a common sight. She then nodded at the question, looking up and giving a warm smile, "Yes, visit! I live further into the forest, away from the mountains where its usually warmer and more humid. The berries are huge and delicious there!" Her mouth watered as she thought about it, and her smile widened, "I'll show you around if you visit! It'll be fun!"

Ranulf's ears lay flat against his skull as the frown crossed her lips. Had he said something wrong? Did the cold weather make her upset? He hoped he had not offended her. Her demeanor changed though and he smiled slightly at the offer. “Sounds fun…” He said cheerfully, though he still had no clue as to weather or not he would be going further south. He didn’t know the dangers, didn’t know any good hiding spots, not to mention he would be leaving his family behind. Maybe he could get his Brother to take him down there; he knew his brother could handle anything.

Then a question crossed his mind. “Why Grace so close to Mountain? Sounds so far from home?” He voiced out loud, curiosity getting the best of him.

"It will be fun," Grace reassured, smiling happily; she was sure the male would enjoy the trip! Travelling is fun and exciting, after all, and at the end of the journey, there woul be juicy, ripe berries waiting... It was the perfect advanture! At the question, she laughed, "Well, I'm not quite sure myself... I've never really had the chance to visit the mountains, so I though I would come by and see what its like here!" She turned her head towards where the mountain was, giving a wistful sigh followed by a grin, "One day, I would love to climb it! Its so big while I'm so small!"

"But..." Ranulf turned his gaze to the mountain as well, lifting his head to look up to the top. "But it dangerous, to climb mountain." He paused. "Grrace go alone? What if Graace got hurt? Who help?" He looked back at grace worridly. He had heard stories of soquili that had fallen from ledges, and one story in particular from his former herd member Gaven - His parents had gotten lost in a blizard and frozen to death on that very mountain. If she were to go alone he feared something just as bad may happen to her.

Grace shook her head, feeling rather happy and touched that Ranulf seem concerned about her safety. Giving a smile, she chuckled, "Nah, don't worry! I can't climb it alone... If I ever go around to climbing it, I'll make sure that its summer, and have a guide with me so that I won't get lost. I've heard that having a guide will make it much safer!" Her stomach gave another growl, this one louder than the last. She looked shocked for a moment, looking around to find the source of the growl. Upon realizing that the noise came from her, however, she blushed again, feeling rather silly.

"Guide safer... But Grace still need be careful." Ranulf whispered with a concerned nod. He jumped a bit at the growl, having forgotten that Grace's stomach had done it before. They had yet to go and get some food. How rude he must be to have stood there all this time chatting while she was probably starving. "I sorry..." Ranulf mumbled, somewhat embarrassed. "Come! Nice flowers and maybe clover this way!" With that he turned and made his way slowly once again towards the base of the mountain, pausing for only a moment to make sure that Grace was following and able to keep up.

"I will, don't worry!" The female smiled, hoping to reassure her new friend that she would be extra careful. At the mention of food, her smile widened and she nodded, trotting a little faster to catch up and follow. She noticed that they were approaching the base of the mountain, and now that she was this close... Well, the peak was no longer visible. She squinted, lookinga t the top before letting out an awed murmur, "It really is tall...."

Ranulf looked up at the sky to the peak of the mountain. He couldn't see it either. Clouds slowly pushed past the rocky surface, swirling around the ledges and cliffs. To him it looked like an upside down sea, the cloudy waves splashing against the jagged rock. He himself wondered what it would be like to be above the clouds for once, but fear had yet to allow him to climb it. "Makes Ranulf feel tin..." He was cut off in the middle of his sentence when his head was suddenly jerked downward. He couldn't keep himself from face planting into the ground, he had had too much momentum. He had stepped yet again on the long ends of his mane. He shook his head as he got to his hooves once more. he blushed, looking back at Grace. He hoped she hadn't seen, but he doubted that she hadn't. With rosy cheeks he looked to the ground sheepishly. To his surprise he had face planted into a rather large patch of tiny wild flowers. They weren't as big as the ones from summer or spring, but considering the chill wind that had been blowing they were quite a bit larger than they should have been. "Grace like these flowers?" Ranulf asked, not looking her direction in hopes of hiding his blushed cheeks. "Ranulf can find more if not."

She had been staring at where she thought the peaks would be, her glance fixed on a point in the sky; it was as if she could see past the clouds and at the peak if she stared hard enough, or long enough. At Ranulf's voice being cut off suddenly, however, the female quickly snapped back to reality as she threw him a worried glance... Just to see him trip over his own mane and stumble to the ground. More concerned that amused, Grace trotted over quickly, giving him a gentle nudge, "Are you alright? Did you hurt yourself?" At his question, however, she noticed the flowers for the first time; her stomach growled, as if in approval, and Grace nodded shortly after.

"Those will be more than enough," She smiled, glad that he seemed to be fine. Flicking her tail, she turned to the wild flowers, lowering her head and inhaling; the good thing about eating flowers is that most of them smell really nice. Straightening up, she turned to the Usdia stallion, "Ranulf eating too?"

The nudge from the tiny mare only served to brighten the crimson tint that had risen in Ranulf's face. She had seen him fall. It was an act he was use to, he had tripped almost every day since his mane had grown from the foalish fluff into the mane he now had today; but, he still felt foolish for doing so. "Yes..." Ranulf stammered at Grace's concern, turning his head ever so slightly to look at her. "I okay. Ranulf not hurt."

He nodded and smiled as Grace approved of the meal, however small it was. He started to think on the berries she had mentioned. It would be a wonderful thing indeed to be able to munch on ripe delicious berries throughout the entire year, rather than only in spring and summer. "I sorry there no berries..." He whispered quietly, more to himself than to Grace. His thoughts were interrupted though as Grace's question reached his ears. "Ranulf eat; Ranulf just wait for Grace - Make sure Grace get enough." He replied quietly with a warm smile.

"That's good!" Grace heaved a sigh of relief, glad that her new friend is well. Her ears twitched slightly at the whisper, and she smiled, "Like I said, if you come visit when its warmer, I can show you around the forest and let you try the different berries! Spring is a great time to explore, since its not too hot nor too cold... Plus, fruits, flowers and grass are plentiful!"

When she finished speaking, her stomach let out another low growl, as if asking her to hurry up; in response, she quickly took a mouthful of flowers, chewing on them before swallowing. Her eyes widened as she took another mouthful; surprisingly, they tasted better than she expected! Was it because she was really hungry, or do the flowers near the mountains taste better?

"Delicious!" She exclaimed, a grin on her lips; yellow pollen clung to her face, but she was obvious to it as she continued to feed.
