If you think a Sailor Moon/New Age connection is a DUH kind if thing, you're pretty well right. I mean, silver millenniums, crystals of power... yeah, it's kind of obvious. Today, though, I found something new.

I did a search on YouTube for "lightworkers," mainly because I wanted to shake my head at their flakiness. (You know how some people read bad fanfiction for lulz? Well, sometimes I watch videos created by flaky new agers and woowoos.) A word in some of the videos caught my eye: starseed.

...lolwhat?

So I plugged the word into Google and sure enough, results aplenty from the department of frosty flakes poured in. Like this site.

From this page:
Quote:
"Starseeds" describe evolved beings from another planet, star system or galaxy, whose specific missions are to assist Planet Earth and her peoples to bring in the Golden Age at the turn of the millennium.

Starseeds incarnate into the same conditions of helplessness and total amnesia concerning their identity, origins and purpose as do Earth humans. However, the genes of starseeds are encoded with a "wake-up call" designed to "activate" them at a pre-determined moment in life. Awakening can be gentle and gradual, or quite dramatic and abrupt. In either event, memory is restored to varying degrees, allowing starseeds to consciously take up their missions. Their connections to the Higher Self are also strengthened, permitting them to be largely guided by their inner knowing.

And from this page: (Which made me laugh hysterically. Doesn't it just sound like it was ripped from a comic book?)
Quote:
Introduction to the Galactic Federation of Light
The Galactic Federation of Light was founded over 4.5 million years ago to prevent inter-dimensional dark forces from dominating and exploiting this galaxy. At present, there are just over 200,000 member star nations, confederations or unions. Approximately 40% are humanoids and the rest are varied forms of sentient beings. Most members of the Galactic Federation are fully conscious beings.

Oh, and Tau Ceti is inhabited, too. And part of its inhabitants include BEAR-LIKE MAMMALOIDS. Go on, say it out loud. It gets funnier every time you say it.

Oh, and this page had some laughs.
Quote:
As has been explained in Sheldan Nidle’s recent updates, we, the Starseeds, and the rest of Earth’s population, have been aligned energetically through our multidimensional chakra system. However, due to Mother Earth's precarious situation as she labors to give birth to an ascending fourth-dimensional planet, the Galactic Federation scientists, the Angelic Hierarchies, the Elohim and Time Lords have had to prevent Mother Earth from birthing prematurely.

...The Time Lords? So Gallifrey is in on this, too? rofl

Okay, okay... now let's look at this page, a supposed list of signs that one is a "starseed."

Quote:
1. They have an intense sense of loneliness.

Yeah, fits most of the characters pretty well.

Quote:
Starseeds have at least one parent who is not on earth. In other words they have one parent who is their real parent and one who is a surrogate parent. The surrogate is usually their earth father but not always. Sometimes it is their mother.. And just in case you are concerned, there is always a contract made between the earth parent and the real parent, before the starseed child is born, for the earth parent to stand in for the real parent and to love and rear the starseed child. Many times the earth parent is a starseed themselves.

Pretty close to the premise of the series.

Quote:
I am told that 144,000 civilizations have sent some of their people to earth as starseeds. These civilizations closely watch their beloved children while here on earth. The real parent, the starseed parent, is usually a guide for his child while that child is on earth.

Is that you, Neo-Queen Serenity?

In light of this, I find myself wondering if Takeuchi borrowed the term "starseed" and if a lot of her research was done in the New Age section...

There is an actual crystal called "Starseed." It's in my Encyclopedia of Crystals.

Interesting. The closest I can find to an actual crystal referred to as a starseed is here. Does this match up to your book's description?

(It does amuse me how people so readily attack magical significance to shiny objects.)

Well, if the above webpage is any indication, it doesn't absolve Takeuchi of doing some of her research in the new age section, or at the very least reading books on mineralogy that had some new age influence.

I got the book mostly to find names for fanfics and such. I'm not into New Age, though I used to be a long time ago.

You know, I felt offended by your post there about poking fun to people who are into New Age.

Ah, sorry. I wasn't referring to new age beliefs in their entirety, but rather a certain subset of very... special flakes. There's new age, and then there's oMG nEw AgE!!!!11

While the first type practices certain beliefs based on or associated with the new age movement, they usually have a decent amount of sense about them. (You won't typically find them waiting to be picked up by a UFO or something.)

The latter group seems to be comprised of people who are either extremely gullible and/or have a desperate need to feel Speshul. They seem very inclined to believe just about anything that suggests to them that they're part of something Big and Important, even if if sounds like it was ripped from Star Trek or a comic book. They go on and on about quantum this and theta that, but anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the subject can tell they know nothing about the scientific terms they rattle off to make themselves sound smarter. (Honestly, I would respect them more if they would actually study a little science now and then and stop trying to shoehorn them into their beliefs. Believing that a crystal has special properties is one thing. Using pseudo-science to promote or justify your beliefs that the crystal has special properties is another - it's dishonesty.)

As long as you don't really question them or their beliefs too much, they act all sugary-happy. But if you start asking serious questions about their beliefs, they respond with snide comments and insults. By any definition, they are truly closed-minded. (Though they will claim that it's you who is the closed-minded one, just because you ask questions.) If you compare this type of people with The Cult Test, you'll find they easily fit symptoms 1, 7, 10, 14, 20, 27, 31, 45, 47, 50, 55, 60, 64, 71, 77, 81, 82, 83, 87, and 93.

Again, sorry for the confusion.
