The first few times they had ventured out of Astan's apartment, he had opted to carry them rather than risk more stares than were necessary. He had told the protos they needed to remain absolutely still no matter what happened, and they must have sensed the urgency of this order, because they hadn't made a peep. Rahk and Ro were very good at being very still, but it was past time for them to get another form of transportation. Astan couldn't be Kooky Stuffed Animal Man forever.
He was considering a backpack, but for now they rode side by side in the front compartment of his shopping cart, each with their legs dangling out of one of the holes made for children's extremities.
"Do you like the thing you sleep on? The blanket?" he whispered. He was determined to get the two of them off of his bed at night, even if it meant they slept on the floor for a time. Maybe if they each had a blanket of their own, they could curl up on them like cats or something.
Ro nodded enthusiastically, pointing up at one of the tiny tents suspended at an angle from the aisle's top shelf.
"Yes, one of those. A small pod would keep us off of your nest." Rahk looked at him with a glint in its eyes that said it knew more than it let on, even if it didn't really. It smiled.
"Those are the display models. I don't think you can... shhh!" Astan shushed suddenly. The store was nearly empty, but every so often they came across someone who might not be all that understanding. Astan thought he heard something.

Uzi was a huntress, smart, capable and meant to handle tough fights. Her body endured the elements better than most and she was fully capable of being independent out in the wastelands. Thus it grated on her nerves to have to admit that she needed a tend to sleep in for overnight hunting trips. hunter purpose combat essentic or not her body was not perfect and the raging desert sandstorms were more than than she could handle. That and well the wastelands did chill quite a bit at night and she had grudgingly admit that the cold had been getting to her. Her own set of camping gear had been Eli'd suggestion since taking off with his wasn't always convenient.
Eli himself was hidden in one of the aisles having crouched down to examine tin cookware. Hmm might not be a bad idea to replace some of his old stuff while they were here. He'd been doing well financially lately and could afford to splurge a bit.
Kell was following his nose, the old hound having broken away from his master in investigate a familiar scent mingled with two strange ones. His nails clicked on the floor as he padded along and rounded a corner, the dogs tail wagging immediately upon spotting the dark skinned man from that time on the street.

"Who is that?" Rahk asked, standing up and leaning its body to the side until it almost fell from the cart.
"Rahk! Shh!" Astan turned, his brain searching for a way to explain away the proto's outburst without looking like a crazy man. When saw Kell, he chuckled to himself and visibly relaxed. "Kell?" After all, who could know if this was the same dog he had met all those months ago.
Against his better judgment, Astan turned back to his cart and lifted the twins out, placing them on the floor several feet from the dog. He held out his empty hands, inviting maybe-Kell to come get pet if he so desired.

Kell padded all the way over to the small things with scents faintly like Uzi's own. With both masters absents for the moment the hunting canine shoved his cold wet nose forward to better sniff one of the creatures belly's. the dark skinned man he would approach for pets later, these were far more interesting for right now to Kell.
Elsewhere in the store Uzi's ears flick and she froze, who was calling kells name and why did she sense other essentics? The alter was positive she knew all the other essentics and their owners that knew Eli and Kell. Leaving her cart unattended she turned and headed towards the noise trying to spot another essentic but seeing none, just a few scattered people in the store.

Ro's eyes opened wide as its body was accosted by nose. It stood stock still for the second it managed to keep its balance, then fell onto its back. Its mouth dropped open in mostly silent laughter.
"WHO..." Astan kneeled on the store's floor, intercepting Rahk mid-screech and transferring it to his shoulder. It hadn't proven to be very fond of the location under normal circumstances, but in its shock it clung to Astan's shirt and watched the proceedings with an expression approaching curious horror.
"Um..." Astan scooted forward, holding his hand out in front of him, but not doing anything with it. He might not have been so timid if the dog had a nose-hold on anything but the mute Essentic, but Astan didn't think provocation was the way to go here. He looked at Ro. It was hard to tell, but he thought it was still laughing. He supposed everything was all right for the time being, but yeah, not his best idea ever.

Kell paused and looked up and over at the other small being, the one that had just made the sharp noise that distracted him. It wasn't doing anything interesting though and the dark mans hand was out, clearly for petting. Abandoning the strange smelling creature for now he padded over to Astan and looked up at the man with the soulful eyes his breed were known for.
" Who's you?" Uzi asked quietly but firmly from behind Astan. The huntress could clearly see and sense the two essentics with him. Now she needed to know who they all were and what they were doing here. Given their size the two others were just protos and really shouldn't be out like this especially not where anyone could stumble upon them. Or where dogs could slobber on them it seemed.
Uzi's tail flicked impatiently as she waited for an answer, still the alter tried to look casual, not wanting to draw even more attention to the area.

Ro began to sit up, now unencumbered by doggy nose, but quickly flopped to the floor again at the young woman's sudden appearance and question. Astan grabbed Rahk off of his shoulder and gave it a stern look before gently placing it on its back near its sibling. He began petting Kell in the hopes that it would temporarily keep the dog away from the Essentics.
Smiling, he turned to look over his shoulder and said, "Oh, uh, sorry. I think I met this dog a while ago and I was just saying hello." He didn't remark on the protos lying on the floor at his feet. They remained silent and mostly still as they had been taught to be in public, but Rahk's eyes betrayed it when it shifted its gaze to Uzi's face. Not that it mattered. This person had already seen the twins move and probably heard their commotion when she had arrived, but late was better than never, right? "I'm Astan," he said.

Uzi relaxed a fraction at Astan's words. He knew Kell and thus Eli and was thus probably then not an utterly horribly being. " Eli named me Uzi" she said her voice soft almost a purr, meant to draw little attention but also to indicate that like the two on the floor she was an essentic. After all Eli had no children and what else might you name?
Kell was quite content to not move away from the petting for now, besides the essentics on the floor weren't even moving.

"Nice to meet you..." Astan's words faded to a near-whisper as he processed what this Uzi had said. True, he had only ever spoken with Eli for all of a half an hour total, but a teenagery daughter named after a firearm was surely something the man might have mentioned. Careful to continue distracting Kell through the art of petting with one hand, Astan pushed his other hand and arm under Rahk and Ro's backs, and with a little grabby assistance from the essentics themselves, gathered them to his chest.
Of course. He hadn't seen Eli at the party after he and four others had been called away in secret, but why the need for a mystery meeting at all if there hadn't been Sparks to be given out that night? A thought scratched at his brain. Had Misha mentioned an Uzi? That would teach him to pay more attention.
Astan stood and turned away from the dog. "Uzi. Yes. Very nice to meet you." His voice held both nervousness and curiosity, but there wasn't much else he could say. An elderly woman shuffled past the end of the aisle, easily in earshot of the group if her hearing aid was turned on.
Rahk was openly staring at Uzi now that the proto was facing her, and although Ro continued to follow Astan's orders to remain completely still, you could tell all of its attention was on the alter as well.

"We should find Eli and go speak somewhere", the alter's suggestion was less an easy going' we should and more an obvious' you're coming with me' sort of thing. Uzi would need to retrieved her cart and pay for her needed camping gear before they could leave the store but this was not the place to be having the sort of conversation she wanted. there were things she wished to know that couldn't be said in the presence of those not already familiar with the reappearance of her kind.

"Um, okay?" Astan said. "I can meet you out front?" He definitely had to pick up some sort of carrying case for the protos, but blankets and tents could wait for another day if it was really necessary. "Where is Eli?" Not that he didn't trust this Uzi, but... he really didn't. Not yet, anyway. He placed Rahk and Ro back in the cart, shielding them from view until they could get situated again.

Uzi focused for a moment letting her nose and ears work together to zero in on her bonded location. She raised an arm to point towards an empty looking aisle. The moment she did so as if summoned by the action Eli stood up , at least part of him visible over the shelves and racking. " I will get Eli and meet you out front." Uzi stated as she noticed the recognition in Eli's eyes upon spotting Astan. She'd have to fetch the redhead before he started over their way and got caught up in talking.
The essentic snapped her fingers prompting Kell to pad over to her side and like that she was off and moving, leaving no room for argument.

Astan nodded, pushing his cart in the direction opposite from the one Uzi headed in. He caught a brief glimpse of Eli before leaving the aisle. So the man was here. Okay then.
He quickly assessed the aisles nearby, turning down one labeled Hiking. Minutes later, he had picked out a rugged-looking knapsack large enough for Rahk and Ro to sit in comfortably. There was a mesh front to it as well, so they had the option to peer out into the world from safely inside. Astan paid, suffering the strange glances the teenaged cashier gave him as he pushed his "toys" through the checkout line, then flopped the Essentics over his forearm and made his way outside. Rahk propped its head on its hands, looking around for the intimidating Alter.

It took a few minutes longer for Uzi and Eli to speak quietly to each other and gather the items they needed. Eli seemed pleased to know this Astan fellow had essentics, at least as far as Uzi could tell it looked that way. She wondered what the connection before them was as she paid for her camping gear and headed for the exit, Eli and Kell just a little bit behind her. The alter's tail swished slowly as she wondered what sort of associates they were and if this meeting meant she would be seeing more of the man. Regardless of the two human's standing she intended to see more of the small protos unless they were boring and the sort to be ignored.
Once they were clear of the store Eli looked around and grinned upon spotting Astan again. He only knew the man a little but he had enjoyed meeting him. That the other man was now an essentic owner as well was both amusing and a good thing. Perhaps they could talk about what it was like and be honest. Not that he hadn't been honest with the others but none of those he'd met seemed to be struggling at all with theirs.
