Hey guys! Long time no talk! As many of you guys may or may not know, I'm a senior and I've been working my buns off trying to get a high grade point average and a good scholar face going on for colleges. Well, it paid off. I ranked 37 out of 282. I know that seems small, but we have IB scholars at my school, so they threw my class rank off by a few and since I didn't do well sophomore year, I'm happy with a 37 :]
Now, this is the hard part. I'm a part of a Verizon carrier-service family who is currently struggling with the phone bill. I am constantly the lowest-billed person in my family, so since I am past due for an upgrade, I am thinking about getting a new phone. The problem is...I want a Blackberry.
If I get the Blackberry Tour, which my heart desperately wants, I add 40 dollars to my bill (for the 30 dollar data plan and extra texting or warranty). I'm struggling with my bill as is, so if I get this, I might cause my family to become debt-built. I know it doesn't seem like much, but it's really a lot for my family right now. So, in a nutshell, I'm torn.
What do I do?
Discuss: class ranks phones technology what i should do
EDIT: HEY GUYS! UPDATE. I talked to my dad and he said he'd buy the blackberry later. He says he knows how useful it would be for me and I deserve it from the hard work I'm putting in. So, here's patience is a virtue for you. Haha.
THANK YOU FOR EVERYONE WHO THANKED ME AND GAVE ME ADVICE. YOU GUYS ROCK! <3333

That is totally amazing Davvey! I'm super proud of you! Your rank is even better then mine when I graduated, but then I think there was closer to 275-300 students who graduated, and I was somewhere between 50-75 out of that... I really need to look that up.
Times are tough right now, and my honest opinion about getting a blackberry is that you should wait. I would love a new phone right now, ever since my previous one broke, but I ended up getting a hand me down chocolate version 2 from my mom while she was able to afford the upgrade to a chocolate version 3.
Point being, it's better to have a phone then nothing at all. I'd say just try to save as much as possible each month, and when you have enough to pay 3-4 months of your part of the cell bill then get the upgrade to a blackberry. That way you have the extra cost already saved for a few months and during that time you can continue to save for the next month and so on.
I'm just happy that I have a phone in case of emergencies, since my job can be considered super dangerous.
Wow, long post, sorry about that sweatdrop

O: I'm impressed! Good job dude! Good job indeed!
As for the blackberry, you're better off asking D then me giving advice. He works for Verizon and had a Blackberry. Let me drag him into here...

...even away from work... I'm still at work ¬_¬
ok, a few questions. Why do you need a blackberry? Not trying to sound rude, but your family is having a hard time paying bills and a blackberry isn't cheap. and i mean the initial purchase. a tour off the top of my head will run you about $150 and that's AFTER the $100 mail in rebate. If the primary line is eligible for the upgrade then you'll get more of a discount (secondary lines don't get discounts since they only pay 9.99) if you're looking for a phone that has good online, facebook, etc... I'd say get an LG env touch. I have a Blackberry storm, but that's only because i didn't pay for it. I traded my little sis because I'm more techy than she is. (i'm actually making themes for it right now) then the data plan. at least with the lg you pay less for the data with the vcast. I'm not saying blackberry isn't cool. its the opposite... and i'm trying to save you from it. Its an addiction. Everyone i work with who has a blackberry all say they'll never go back to a regular cell phone. It is awesome. but I would not suggest it to anyone who might not be tech savy or in a situation like you say you're in. Its like a drug. We don't call them Crackberries for nothin. I'd say if you got your own job and can help out with the bill, get the tour or the storm 2 (out tomorrow) but if you don't have a job to help out I'd go for the LG. Its cheaper and even though it doesn't have all of the same features, its still really cool. now if you ask me anymore i'll have to charge you since they ain't payin me overtime for this. Congrats by the way ninja

I had no idea you worked for Verizon D. That's pretty cool.
Since you're on, could you tell me if a chocolate is even worth upgrading? I've been told that the choco 3 has some nice upgrades to it from the choco 2, but the only thing I like about the choco 3 is that it flips open instead of slides open like the choco 2. I ask cause my mom freaked out and wanted the upgrade, saying it was super awesome, and gave me her choco 2.
I honestly only use my phone to make calls and for texting. What phone would you recomend for someone who doesn't do anything but call and text with it?

i personally like the chocolate 2 better, but don't upgrade yet. I can't say what's coming out soon (cause they'll fire my a** if they found out) but I can say a lot of cool s**t will be out for the Christmas season. So to answer your question... no, don't bother with a chocolate 3

I don't plan on upgrading it cause of financial things right now, and whenever I am able to get a new phone it'll be something that actually flips instead of slides. Having it slide instead of flip irratates me lol I'll keep a look out for the holiday new goodies! 3nodding
