Alazne had never given up the hope that she would somehow manage to attract the attention of the cattaur she'd been protected by over such a long amount of time. It was getting chilly outside again, which meant that she would need his help preserving the opening of her little ice cave. But for now, she was busy occupying herself with late fall flowers and picking each petal off of just a few of them, to the tune of 'he loves me, he loves me not'.

The correct answer was 'not'.

And that was the only one she got.

Yet, as though she would get a different reaction from a different flower, she would do it again and again, hoping that she would get at least one positive answer. And yet, she continued to get nothing but 'not, not, not'. Finally, the wolftaur got fed up with this game and threw the flower to the ground, stomping on it and snarling.

"IT'S NOT TRUE," she screamed at the ground, scaring a few stray animals. She bit back tears that slipped out the corners of her eyes regardless, stomping on the flower weakly before falling into her crossed arms. "It can't be true..."

It was cold. And Jackie was freezing. He had only recently found a cave for him and his little sister to live in. It was pretty small was messy, but it was better than nothing. And he found it just as the cold weather was starting to set in. But for now, Jackie felt some comfort in walking through the forest and looking at the changing colors of the world. It gave him some peace of mind.

The centaur shivered. I really wish I had a thicker coat, he thought as his hoofs quietly pounded on the forest floor. But in the distance, he heard what he thought was a scream, and the sudden noise in the quiet gloom made Jackie jump. Out of panic and being startled, the centaur ran as fast as he could to the source of the noise. When he stopped to catch his breath, he could see a short distance away was a darkish colored female wolftaur. Despite her somewhat... shabby appearance, the female was, in Jackie's eyes, very lovely. He wondered what she was doing all alone.

The centaur thought for a second before acting. Should he talk to her and see if she was okay, or should he just ignore her, because it wasn't really his business? Jackie sighed. He hoped he was making the right decision and slowly approached the female. As he got closer to her, he could see what looked to be the remains of flowers. Jackie as now even more intrigued, and he hastened his pace. She looks so lovely... Why would someone like her be all by herself? The centaur hoped to find the answer to that question and he stopped in front of the female wolftaur and asked gently, "Are you all right?"

Alazne had finally dissolved into tears by the time she was confronted by the other male, having been under the impression that she was alone, and that no one would hear her crying. No less, she'd been unable to hear anything over the sound of her sobbing, her ears being so sensitive... She whimpered to himself, and when she heard the centaur speak, she jumped back, hic-coughing pathetically and wiping both her eyes and her nose, taking a pathetically crafted battle stance as her body continued to rock or twitch gently every now and again with sobs that she refused to let out.

"Wh-what are you d-doing here?" she stammered, the heartbreak she was suffering through obvious in the way that she spoke. Apparently it had finally set in that she was going to get Triston in the end. Even so, she was trying so hard to tell herself that she would still care about him, still set his bed at night, still take care of him as a friend. But no matter how much she told herself that, she wanted nothing to do with him from this point on. And she didn't even know why. She just knew that seeing him would only make this pain that much worse.

"And wh-what does it matter if I- if I'm alright?!" she said defensively, sniffling again and wiping away another tear that rolled down her cheek. "W-why do y-you c-c-care?"

Jackie was startled by the female woftaur's sudden defensive attitude. Although, that may have been to be expected, considering he was a stranger who had walked in on the female in the middle of crying. Great. And now I feel bad. I should have just ignored her... But she was so lovely... Jackie's eyes shot wide open, and he shook his thoughts away, his patterned face lightly blushing.

The centaur quickly wheeled himself back into reality. He put his hands up as a sign of peace. "N-nothing. I'm s-sorry if I was intruding on you. I was taking a walk and I heard someone crying, so I ran over to where it was and I saw you here. I apologize." Jackie tried his best not to stammer and used all of his will to prevent the color from rushing to his cheeks. He put his hands back down to his sides and sighed. "I really am sorry. I wanted to make sure that everything was all right."

Alazne admitted that perhaps she was being too hard on this centaur, but it wasn't a very conscious admission. Rather, what she convinced herself was that none of her emotions, whether there or not, were any of his business at all. After all, what was he but a masked, face-covered, orange, weird-looking, kinda pretty centaur?! And who was he to so much as talk to her; after all, he wasn't Triston or Blake, and those seemed the only people she would ever talk to. Well, those as well as Reyson, but... she hadn't spoken to him in a long, long time...

Part of her regretted turning him down. Especially since she sympathized so well now.

Her amber eyes returned to the centaur, the sadness in them practically audible as a soft sigh mixed with a sob fell from her lips and she gave him a smile, shaking her head. "You're n-not worth being mad at..." she murmured. "D-d-didn't do anyth-thing after all..." A laugh fell from those lips, tearful and defeated in its sound. "For that matter, you a-actually d-did do something..."

Jackie, for some reason that eluded him, couldn't take his eyes off of the wolftaur. She looked so pitiful and alone, but so... pretty. The image of her still pierced him even when he closed his eyes and tried to look away. He bit his lip and let his eyes meet the female's, confused and unsure. "What... I-I did? What did I.... do? I... I j-just..." J The centaur was unsure what to do. He had never met anyone like this wolftaur before, and he couldn't think of what to say to her.

"Well.... I-I just... I'm sorry if I disturbed you, I..." He trailed away for a second or a two, doing his best not to stare at the female. She was shabby, true, but there was a slight charm about her. He fur seemed... dingy, and her sweater had a patch or two in it. There was even, to Jackie's utter surprise, a chain around her neck, as if she had been imprisoned. But Jackie saw a small amount of great beauty in the wolftaur. He found his voice again.

"Look, I'm sorry if... You... I'm sorry if I startled you or whatever or... But the point is, why are you crying? Someone like you..." Jackie turned away and blushed. "...Someone like you shouldn't be all alone by yourself."

Alazne laughed in her pained fashion, smiling hesitantly at the male, a wobbly and sensitive smile with the ability to falter at any given moment. "I mean that you actually cared. You actually noticed me, something which h- ...something that he never did," she murmured, unable to sound angry when she was talking about Triston. God, why did she love that stupid, cold, emotionless cattaur so much? Why did she want him to hold her, to kiss away all of her pain, to make her happy and care about her?!

She was a moment away from breaking down again when she realized that there was still another person near her. Biting her lip, she rubbed her grubby sleeve across her eyes and shook slightly. "Sorry," she said quietly, not really knowing why she was apologizing for her emotions. She watched the male and smile weakly. "I'm crying because my love will be forever unrequited. And I promise, I was born to be alone. It's just what was planned for me."

Jackie looked at the wolftauress, rather startled. She... What did she say? Of course... Of course Jackie cared about her, even if she was a complete stranger, but the way she said it was... odd. It seemed almost wistful. And who was "he?" As she said "he," she seemed to be angry. Was "he" once a lover or a friend? Jackie knew he couldn't ask anything about it to the female for politeness's sake, but the curiosity of it gnawed at him.

The centaur smiled sympathetically at the lonely wolftauress. "There's no need to say that you are sorry. Sadness, I suppose, is just a side-effect of pain." Jackie's tail swished back and forth slowly. His smile dissipated and he stepped towards towards the wolftauress. "Your love... Unrequited? ...I don't think that is so." Jackie rubbed the back of his neck, slightly embarrassed. "Well... A-at least, what I think is that... Everyone has someone they were meant to be with, and we can sometimes mistake that someone for someone else, and we end up getting hurt..." He looked away. "I'm... s-sorry, I must sound like an idiot..."

Alazne was quiet as Jackie was, thinking similar thoughts of the male. At least, thoughts that, if he heard, he could answer his own silent questions. Triston... stupid cattaur. An ice king that she lusted after, always had, even when the male had been long gone from her life. At least, he certainly made it seem as though he was never going to come back. Then again... she hadn't seen him since she was a teenager, since Blake was a very small boy, small enough that she could still hold him. Why, then, could she not pull her thoughts away from him...?

She listened silently to what he said, ears tipped slightly forward to block out the gentle winds. They started tipping back when his topic turned to lover, to her own unrequited love, itself. Her tail tipped down, curling between her rear legs as her ears tipped further back. Slowly, her head tipped down, brown hair falling across her eyes and shielding her golden eyes from Jackie's sight. Within only a few moments, tears filled those eyes and her arms wrapped tightly around her chest, beginning to sob into herself pathetically. By that logic, she never even had a chance with Triston, no matter how much she loved him. Not only did she not have a chance...

...but then he would be meant for someone else.

The sight of the wolftauress breaking down into tears was heart-wrenching, and it frightened Jackie greatly, because he knew that what he had said must have upset her in some form or fashion. This wolftaur... Why was she so upset? What could have caused her so much pain? Jackie dared not reason it out, for fear of upsetting her even more and making an enemy out of her. So instead of inquiring, he frantically reached for the sobbing taur, then pulled back. Perhaps it was best not to, but...

Oh, this was all his fault! Why did he have to go and say such stupid and hurtful things! It wasn't like he meant to! That was just what he felt... He buried his patterned face into his hands for a moment, then sighed and turned away from the pitiful sight of the wolftauress. God, why was he such an idiot?!

"I'm so, so, so sorry..." he begun to say, then turned back around to face the taur. He continued, his voice cracking with emotion. "I really am! I say such awful things sometimes, a-and I'm not very good with interacting with others, and..." His face became buried in his hands once more. "...And I'm such a freaking moron!" He paused for a second, then gave a heaving sigh. "I didn't mean to hurt you..."
