In the Shadow of a Child
Patrick is a child, all wide eyes and dimples
Reminiscent of a time that seemed oh so simple.
In the shadow of a child I stand
Helpless as youth slips from my hands.
I remember; I think of times long past
Watching myself grow...growing too fast.
We do not take our time, do not savor innocence
And suddenly, a shadow is all we have left and nothing makes sense.
In that shadow I weep, I cry, I sob
For my childhood lost, my innocence robbed.
And Emily is a child, all ribbons and roses
How lucky she is, though she does not know it.
In her shadow I pray for days gone by
When I should have been a child, I was living a lie.
Instead I was caring for those who cared not
When laughing and playing should have been my lot.
In the shadow of a child
In the shade of the past
It lasted a while
It faded too fast.
We seem to take for granted
Those fleeting childhood years
And as we grow the seeds are planted
For all these many tears.
Tears we shed for things we did not notice
When, of course, we knew we should
Now who is left to cry for us
When no one said they would?
