He's been named the starter for next weeks game against the Colts and probably longer.
Your thoughts.
Well, I think it's a great move. We couldn't move the ball at all in the first half against the Texans, but Smith coming in gave us that spark on offense. Not to mention, it really opens up the playbook. 2 of our 3 best weapons on offense is a wide receiver and a tight end. Throw the ball more. It'll open to holes for Gore.
Although.... My biggest concern is still the offensive line.... Jeez what a terrible line we have...
Still, I'm happy for Smith. I was always rooting for him, hoping he could become the great quarterback we wanted him to be. Remember, he's still only 25... Still very young. He can still be good.

I agree that the offensive line is the biggest concern for this team. But You got to go with the player that gives you the best chance to win. And Sunday, even in a loss we saw how Smith can give us a better edge.
Bottom line for coach Singletary, you want to be a running team, but with the offensive line as bad as it's been playing you need to find balance in the passing game to help throw off defenses. Before teams would always play the run because Hill has been mediocre in the pass. Hill can manage a good drive and for the most part remain consistant, but lacks a lot of the physical properties which on paper makes Alex Smith a better QB. So why has Hill been the starter? consistency, if Smith had the consistency Hill has, then there wouldn't be any question who would start.
That and Smith is a better scrambler. With the line as bad as it is right now, having someone who can keep plays alive and avoid sacks is important, which Smith has proven he can.
Finally, during the bye week, when everyone was resting, Crabtree was working hard at the practice facility receiving catches from... Alex Smith. Smith spent his bye week working with Crabtree and building a report with him. Not jumping the gun saying Michael will be a break out receiver for the 49ers, but Sunday showed a lot of promise, and Smith has more reps with the potential future star, lets see if they can build on what they started.
It's a shame that Sunday they are going into Indianapolis as heavy underdogs, and I hope fans won't ask for Smiths head on a silver platter if they loose. But this really is Smiths last chance in San Francisco to resurrect his career. But even if they loose again, if Smith can play a good game, and keep it close enough against an undefeated Colts team, he can make a good argument why he should be the long term solution to the teams QB problems, an not just a filler till the end of the season.
