But this wasn't a movie, and as his door swung open on the now-darkened room his spirits sank again. It had been so sweet to just hang out with some people for a change. Enough with the studying, garbage. Enough pretending that he was a scholar when everyone knows he isn't. He didn't understand why since his powers were so basically harmless that Grove's headmaster had made such a big deal about admitting him. He'd basically never had structured education before. The only time he was required to attend classes was when the Cirque went to certain countries that had laws about child education. Even then, the classes were mostly based on practical things like languages and physical skills. Otherwise, the circus kids were left to themselves to invent whatever tricks they could come up with.
This room, it wasn't something he was used to. His own, this was his own room. Looking around, he saw bits of his own taste, the bright colors inspired by his mother's best saris, the pictures of the Delhi skyline and pictures of his performances in the Cirque. They all pointed out who he was - Indian, and a circus performer. Strange, none of these seemed to indicate loneliness, that itch he had for being active.
Samyule tossed himself on his bed, crossing his arms under his head and staring up at the ceiling. Outside, dark had completely consumed the skyline, and his mind fluttered restlessly from topic to topic until it landed on one day he'd spent as a kid in India. He and his friends had spent all of the daylight hours jumping from rail-car to rail-car, and had ended up at a rural village on the boarder. None of them had been afraid, but they were covered in dirt and dust. His best friend, Mohinder, had discovered a nearby lake covered by trees and tall weeds. The boys stripped off and jumped in, watching the night stars' reflection in the pond and vowing to remain brothers forever.
As he remembered, he smiled like a fool. They managed to get home the next day, but his mother had been furious. It became legend. The boys were heroes for weeks until a new gang moved in on the territory and everyone was too busy covering their tails and learning who was in charge.
He sat straight up like a shock. This place...this place was a school, and it had a gym. Samyule had been in it before! And it had this amazing pool...covered with a glass roof so the sky was visible. He bet...he bet that you could see the stars reflected in the water.
Legend...who made legends but the people that lived them? And what legends did this Grove place have? none, so far. He'd make the first then. But...for him and two girls to go out alone, that was crazy. He'd need another guy.
Grabbing up his swimming trunks from the dresser, and a towel, he hurried out of his door and walked as quietly as possible down the hallway.
