So my dad had some friends over today, and we all went out to do some interesting tests. They brought 16 sheets of drywall and 32 1x2s to use as spacers. After setting up 10 layers of drywall (2" spaces between) we got bored, some duct tape was put on to hold it all together, and while we were taping it we stuck an 11th layer on the back. We started with .22s. The Walther P22 went through seven layers, bounced off the eighth regardless of ammo, hardball or Stinger. The Ruger Mk. III went through eight, bounced off the ninth. My Mossberg went through nine, bounced off the tenth. Next up were a pair of .380s- one Colt (essentially a mini 1911) and something that might have been a Kel-Tec. Those drilled neat little holes through all 11 layers. That's five and a half walls, and they were still moving. Neat little fact though... one of the .380 hollowpoints was recovered sitting on the berm. The hollowpoint divot was packed with sheetrock and it had completely failed to mushroom. Everything after that, 9mm, .45, .44... they all just drilled holes of varying size.

Then we set up 4x6x12 blocks of wood. .22 stuck inside, everything else penetrated 4", and the 6" too. .303 penetrated the 12". twisted

We moved on to the 3/4" chunk of aluminum. NOTHING penetrated this, but .357 made the biggest divot. .303 bored nice clean holes through. mrgreen

Then we just started ******** around with stuff. Anyway, moral of the story, if it's big enough to kill, it's big enough to go through your walls. Choose the bigger caliber, overpenetration will happen either way. Also, I like .45 AND .44. .44 Magnum is a really nice round, going through a Super Redhawk. Also .380. Maybe I just have problems with 9mm?

Interesting stuff. Also off-putting. You should have done some tests on penetration power after entering and exiting a generally full-sized man.

But I guess it's hard to get a volunteer for that sort of thing.

We'd have to steal one of the neighbor's cows. They're about as thick as a full-sized man, the poor mangy creatures. The bullets would be a ******** favor, too.

It should be noted though that after five and a half walls, the .380 didn't have enough power to penetrate the BERM. It just hit the ground and sat there. Didn't even deform from the impact.

Yeah, I've heard if bits of cloth from clothes packing into the hollowpoint and kept it from mushrooming.

I guess there's some truth to it then.

If you have some Sheet Rock laying around try that as well.

Also, there are recipes for ballistics gelatin online.

Make one, put a flannel shirt on it in front of the drywall and fire.
