Ok... quick (important) poll for anyone who considers themselves a Witch. There is a new sub-forum in the Entertainment Discussion forum called the Supernatural Forum.

The forum description is (bold-ed by me)...

Quote:
Discuss unearthly beings, like ghosts, vampires, warewolves, witches, UFOs, paranormal, and other supernatural phenomenon.

How many of you are ok with this?

Need to know, so I can give feedback on it.

Thanks!

I'm not going to say I'm flat out insulted, since we are basically a minority and most people grow up beleiving in witches as part of the supernatural. However, it's still rather irksome since it's sort of like Gaia's calling witches fictional beings, especially since the number of real-life witches on the site keeps growing....and you know the multitudes of Pagan-flamers/haters/trolls will be all over this. (Which just adds to my irritation)

I'm Agreeing with Lamia, Seeing as many humans Grew up thinking the Witch is Unnatural and unearthly. Though We know the truth ourselves about this. Though if we went out and started shouting "Witch rights" We'd be laughed at.

I mean it's not like Civil Rights where you can tell someone is black or someone is gay, Plus it's not very hurtful either because we are basically Supernatural to begin with even if we don't think we are.

Personally I'd rather it be taken down though.

But likewise many people grow up thinking "gypsy" is a rather romantic term for a culture, rather than the racist slur it is.

I am not okay with this, I object to it, and I would like it removed.

If you can distinguish between fictitious witches and real-life witches, there really shouldn't be much of a problem. As the witches of fiction are largely dealing in the supernatural and sometimes deal with unearthly beings or are involved in stories that take place in another 'earth' or realm.

Perhaps, it would have been better for them to say to discuss a range of supernatural or ethereal topics, instead of unearthly.

I agree with chaoticpuppet. If people know that they mean fictional witches [like the TV show Charmed or the Halloweentown movies on Disney] instead of the real witches, then I don't really have any issues with it.

we can sit and argue amongst ourselves whether it is right or wrong but from a certain view point we are super natural to those on the outside looking in. but from we who look out from the inside then it is a different story. i think it should be re-written but not taken down.

So you'd prefer that the outside view remains that witches are supernatural, rather than providing accurate information and education to those outside the witchcraft community?

There are places in the world where a belief in witches as supernatural beings causes people to be abused, persecuted, and even killed.

But, no, of course we shouldn't challenge the idea...after all, it's harmless. Right?

I know, and I don't necessarily have any problem with the forum itself. My main issues are where it is located, and with witches being lumped in with Vamps/Warewolves and "unearthly beings".

Witches are misrepresented in the assertions of modern literature, culture, and holiday. It's ingrained into the minds of the population. I, personally, couldn't care less about political correctness; naturally, however, we're the only ones who seem to notice the problem, since the majority is too ignorant to realize that the stereotypical Witch is exactly that. At this point, there's very little to be done about it. I'm not going to waste my time being offended every time I turn a corner on Halloween, because that's about how common this is.

All in all. I'm not surprised. If this dose occur and Witches are lumped in with the rest of that stuff some one credible could simply make a thread stating the truth. In a respectful manner. Yes, the spirits I invoke in rituals are agents ignorance and I'm sure some of you feel the same but we should still be calm and reserved.

its a little insulting but when most people think of witches they think like halloween fictional stuff and alot of people dont even take it as a serious religion or even know that there is a religion so i guess you cant really get mad at them for there ignorence about the subject cause they dont even really know about it

Personally, I'm not exactly insulted by it because I realize that there's a difference between the kind of witch I am and the kind of witch they're talking about. Still, I do think that it was a poor decision to lump witches in with werewolves and aliens. So... yeah, actually I don't really know how I feel about it.
