Finding activities to please a little girl was proving to be both easier and harder than Gustav Bainbridge had anticipated. Easier, because Ariel seemed pleased by almost everything. Her preferences were not strong and she rarely voiced them unless asked. Harder because he still had to come up with age-appropriate activities and the old man was not the sort to wander around a mall.
Luckily it was fall, and nearing Halloween and as such, kid-friendly events abounded. Today's adventure was the apple-orchard: pick your own apples and then squeeze them into cider with the help of the friendly orchard-hands. The brisk air was supposed to be good for children and he imagined that Ariel would especially enjoy squeezing the juicy life out of the apples.
"It's very pretty, mister B." Ariel exclaimed as they took their apple-picking basket and trudged towards the trees. "Look at all the apples!" She smiled, her glowing yellow eyes taking in everything.

Ai's eyes were yellow then red then yellow again in the span of only a few seconds as she was let out of the backseat of the car. Young as she was the ability to read well seemed programmed into her thus she could very clearly see the sign that proclaimed that this was an apple orchard. Never mind hat she would see the trees filled with fruit.
" You said this would be a surprise," The silver haired girl accused. Her main eyes and and cores swiveling to stare at the woman beside her " I know what apples are, they aren't a surprise." Surprises were things you didn't know about and she knew about apples, that they came in red and green and yellow, that they could taste sweet or sour.
Nell nodded and gave a soft sigh " Yes, but you've never gone apple picking from an orchard before and I bet you don't know apples can be made into a special drink called cider." The dark haired woman knew Ai wasn't being difficult on purpose but she was finding more and more that her little shared cyborg charge had to have situations approached in certain ways before she accepted them.
Ai hummed briefly low in her throat and then nodded eyed flicking blue and then back to yellow ." I guess it"s sort of a surprise then." She conceded and began to walk forwards towards the gate where the baskets were.

Ariel couldn't reach any but the lowest branches, and those had already been picked clean by other youngsters. So she alternated between sitting on Gustav's shoulders to reach the higher branches, dropping the apples into the basket he obligingly held out for her and running around on the ground, seeking apples that had fallen and hadn't been turned to mush or half eaten by animals or riddled with worm-holes.
She wasn't paying terribly close attention to what she was doing or who was around her when she reached for the same apple that the little cyborg was also reaching for. "Oh, I'm sorry." Ariel's eyes flashed slightly brighter although it was hard to tell in the sunlight. But she offered Ai a pleasant (if empty-headed seeming) smile and held the apple out to her.

Ai stared at the offered apple and the apologetic girl for a moment examining them both. " You touched it first." Her own reflexes failed her due to the need to bend to the ground to get the desire fruit. Ai too was too short to reach the branches that still had fruit but the metallic lower half of her legs made it difficult to bend, the bio-organic metal yielded only slowly, low at her current age and height meaning she had to go slower so as not to fall. A doctor had said that she needed to think harder and build more muscles to make the non skin parts of her body work the same as the skin parts.
Regardless of the loss of the fruit Ai smiled, this was like sharing and it was good and people would be nice to her if she participated int he activity of sharing. Ai had no use for people who weren't nice to her.

Ariel, gesture made, was content to keep the apple. She had next to no experience meeting people, but she at least vaguely knew what was considered polite. "My name is Ariel." She finally said after determining that giving your name was, indeed, the appropriate response. "It's nice to meet you." This is what Gustav said to people, and then they shook hands. Ariel thrust hers out towards Ai expectantly: a little girl playing at being a grown-up man.

The cyborg girl reached out to give the other a firm handshake, still unaware full for her own strength "They said I have to answer to Ai now." A roll of one of her eye likes cored gestured towards Nell as ' they'. She didn't have name, it wasn't anywhere in her memory but for now becuase they said so she was called Ai.
All her eyes then flicked up to stare at the apples far out of reach "Climb on me" she commanded of the other girl and pointed up. "The good apples are up there." To her keen eyes they looked the roundest and juiciest, there would be no substandard apples for her.

Yellow eyes widened momentarily in suprise, then Ariel looked up towards the higher branches that Ai was staring at. There was no denying that the other girl was right, those apples definitely looked better up there.
"Alright." Obediently, Ariel managed to boost herself onto Ai's shoulders, clinging to a branch to help maintain her balance, the lace edging of her dress brushing over the cyborg's silver hair. "Theres a lot of them up here!" She exclaimed, plucking a plump red apple and dropping it down.

" Other kids aren't smart enough to do this," Thus leaving all the good apples for them, Ai explained as she caught and placed the apples into her basket, they would split them later. Of course most other children didn't have her enhanced body to make holding another girl up so easy.
Two of eyes core were briefly distracted the lace before staring upward at the source of it, neither detected anything of interest inside the girls dress though and the purple one directed it's attention elsewhere.
A few feet away Nell busied herself with picking apples to use for baking. it was probbaly for the best that she was unaware that parts of her daughter were essentially staring up another girls dress.

Ariel didn't notice the way Ai's gaze was wandering up her skirt. She was too busy dropping apples, until... "Oh! Look! A bird's nest!" She grinned, peering inside the natural treasure box. "And theres a little egg inside!"
Indeed, a bright blue egg lay in the nest, unhatched. This late in the season it could only stand to reason that the egg was a dud, it was long past the time baby birds usually hatched.

"We don't want an egg," Ai's voice was nearly monotone as she dismissed the thing which so excited the other girl. " It would get squished and smell," Ai didn't demand perfection around her nor was she always immaculate looking but the silvery haired girl had adverse to smelling like squished egg.
"Are their feathers?" Those, were something she was interested in having, Nell wouldn't let her pick them off the ground but surely it was different if they came from a nest.

"Yes, there are some feathers." Ariel responded, peering deeper into the nest. "And some string, too. But what if theres a bird inside the egg?" She queried. Would it be dead? Or sleeping? The small brunette found the idea intriguing.

" Bring the nest down" Ai ordered calmly. That way she could get her feathers and the other girl could look at the egg better. If the egg was gross inside or smelly than Ariel could at least have the nest and the shell if they cracked the egg open right.

Ariel picked up the nest gently, then clambered down off Ai's shoulders. As far as she was concerned, the nest and what was potentially in the egg eclipsed the apples in the orchard by a long shot.
On the ground she sat abruptly and starting fingering the egg gingerly. "Whaddya think?"

Able to actually see the egg now Ai's interest in the small thing rose. "Shake it" she suggested, if there was something heavy inside like a little bird they'd hear it hit the shell. The cyborgs eyes shifted colour to signify her raised curiosity, oh she still wanted the nest and it's feathers but the egg.. now it was was a real mystery, though she still didn't want it to be gross inside.

Without hesitation Ariel shook the little egg, holding it up to her ear to see if it made any sound. It didn't, but it felt sort of heavy, like there was something inside. She shook it next to Ai's ear to get the other girl's opinion.
"I wonder whats inside... should we open it?"
