Cool $1,500 gun. Why can't you hit the broad side of a barn? Goto Page: 1 2 [>] [»|]

Today at the range, I noticed something somewhat depressing that I had not noticed in my previous visits.

All the the people around me sucked.

The guy next to me using an AR-15 that MUST have cost over $1,500 was shooting at 100 yards and making 2' groups. Two feet. That's just awful- I was making about 5" groups at 100 yards with a crappy old .30-06 hunting rifle.

The man next to me with a muzzle loader was making 1'6" groups at 100 yards. (Though I could understand this if he was sighting in.)

The two people at the end of the range using pistols were just goddamn awful. On was making 1'6" groups at TEN YARDS with a M1911. The other was making 6" groups at 10 yards with some kind of .22 handgun, though I could understand that because he was probably firing off-hand. (His right arm was in a cast.)

So, do any of you think that some people who have wonderful, awesome guns just can't make them worth the $600+ because they're just such awful shots that it doesn't matter what guns they have?

Maybe the AR15 guy wasn't experienced with his gun. We're not all raised with guns and shooting from the age of 5. If you just recently got interested in firearms and haven't had a chance to really practice with them you aren't going to get 3 inch groupings at 100 yards.

You're going to see a lot of things like that on a range.

As Rommel said, not everyone is a practiced marksperson. It's not a talent you're born with. God knows I get the shakes every once in awhile.

While it sucks to watch things like that, don't get down on them for trying. I've seen people get so pissed after a bad day that they give up and put the gun away for good, or sell them.

One can hope that more people will take up training courses and try to better their skills. And, at best, you can hope you'll never be at the wrong end of a gun any of those folks are holding if they ever start shooting. rofl

Keep in mind that these are people with all the bells and whistles that you would only expect to need if you're a serious shooter.

And I've only shot about 7 times in my life.

Why are they oh-so terrible with such great guns? I know that it wasn't outside factors or anything, because my brother and I were able to make passable groups with shitty rifles at the same ranges as them.

I AM JUST SO CONFUSED! gonk

Sometimes it's the bells and whistles that make things go way wrong. Ever try to set up a scope or red dot on a rifle? Even with practice and the right tools, it's a pain. And not everyone is going to spend the time and money to get the job done right.

I'm thinking the guy with the AR just needed some practical help and a fine tooth comb on the sight adjustments. Or, at least, to check if the guy was using the scope properly.

I was getting a 1'6" group at 250 yards with an M1 Carbine. Well, what I could tell anyway, from the .30 holes in the backstop since I was shooting to the side of the target.

That's 250 and you were shooting to the side, though. This guy had a perfect shot at only 100 and was making 2' groups. gonk

I'm the guy at the range that can't shoot, but granted it's not a range but rather a friend's empty land. Since I shoot roughly every four months its not that surprising. But I've committed to start doing some dry-fire practice every day. My friend knows me as the gun guy, the guy that knows everything about guns (I don't, but most Louisianians aren't into guns, just hunting if anything, they don't actually know their s**t), so its embarrassing to suck.

The man next to me with a muzzle loader was making 1'6" groups at 100 yards. (Though I could understand this if he was sighting in.)
Was it a smoothbore or rifle? I ask because that kind of shooting with a smoothbore is extremely good.

Almost certainly rifled. It looked fairly new, not like a flintlock or anything.

The only mechanisms I know of for muzzle loaders are matchlock, wheel lock, flintlock, and percussion cap. You'd recognize the first two when you saw them, and the other two look fairly similar to each other.

It appears we have a mystery on our hands. WE MUST FIND OUT WHAT GUN THIS IS!

It broke open like a double-barreled shotgun, and he put a primer inside.

That's a breech loader, not a muzzle loader. It's probably a trapdoor rifle. A Ferguson if the guy's rich.

I noticed that I did far better the first time I fired the .22 at a paper target than the second time. Hell, the first time I actually HIT the target, and almost scored a bullseye. The second time, I was missing all over the place. The two shots with the Mauser completely missed the target.

I think you misunderstood. The powder, wad, and round go in through the muzzle, the rifle breaks open, and the primer goes on the back of the barrel. It's an internal-hammer muzzleloader.
