Watching my dog fight with some neighborhood dogs made me think about dominance. Its brutal and completely logical, in my opinion. What are your thoughts about it?

History would seem to agree with you. Historically, wars waged simply to gain power, resources, and territory have been completely accepted. It's only really in the 20th century that the use of military force for such purposes has been frowned upon by any significant portion of the international community.

Dominance is only one factor of a complicated social hierarchy for most intelligent animals. Dominance brings power of course, but also enemies. Sometimes cooperation is a more productive path in the long run.

Those with dominance are shown respect: whether forcefully or voluntarily. The animal kingdom is a vicious place with its own social hierarchy which has remained intact for millions of years. It's even programmed into our brains today: You see those dogs fighting right? Back in the old school-days, do you remember a kid that would be beaten every day by a bigger kid? The bigger kid is asserting their dominance and demanding respect, to be the top dog of the entire school: one of the reasons why that bigger kid is probably mouthing off to his teachers.
Discussions and Competitions are also ways we assert our dominance. Arguments over the last and final word break out within political discussions, and who really wants to be the loser in a game of football/chess/scategorys?
Megalomania is such a barbaric thing, wouldn't you agree?

Dominance can be a scary thing, in my own opinion. And unfortunately, it's not as simple as everyone just leaving each other alone. It'd be nice if there was a way to live without forcing dominance over others, but that's part of living on Earth. If it were better, this would be Heaven.
