"By the shards of the Queen's egg!"
A soft series of coughs rang out from a sectioned area in the kitchens as a bandaged hand waved away some smoke that rose from the firepit. Normally, it was something she could avoid and avoid it she tried her hardest; smoke tended to damage anything she was trying to make...
Or...well, mostly everything. Securing the mask she wore around her mouth and nose, Mya eyed the bundle of plants laying on a stone counter with mild distaste. While the stuff had it's uses, numbweed was a little difficult to make into a salve.
Not to mention when it was being "cooked", it made everyone within a few yards of the pot run for the weyrs. But, she needed some, and Mya was not about to work without it. Especially if her next patient was a Dragon and Rider.
"Okay...I should get started..." She then sighed and hung her head. "I just wish Elsu was here." That little bugger always made work fun.

Yulu knew that smell. Oh shells, did she ever know that smell.
The smell of burning Numbweed (were it possible).
She also had a faint idea of where it was coming from, the trail of smoke not hard to follow as it rose above and sent people scattering away from the place her feet carried too, so as Yulu rounded herself towards the area where a coughing girl in a mask stood over a pot, she figured she'd found the right place. The sleeve of her shirt was placed over her mouth and nose, allowing her to breath well enough to enter, though the stinging smoke snapped at her eyes and left them to water.
She drew closer to the figure behind the pot, unable to clearly see them from the water in her eyes, though Yulu quickly wiped her face when she had come fully into the area. A mask was quickly put on her own face, there happened to be another laying near the bundle of Numbweed (ha, she knew it!), and Yulu looked up towards the girl with a frown.
"If you're trying to boil, you've got the fire entirely too hot. You're actually going to cook those things if you don't lower the temperature."

Mya wiped the water from her own eyes before casting a glance at the girl beside her, not really all that surprised. (The Healers back at the Hall appeared from out of nowhere all the time and it would've have been long before someone came to see what she was doing.) She then glanced down at the flames, snapping and popping while consuming what she had thought to be wood soaked.
"I thought I had put enough water on the wood beforehand to keep the flames from getting this hot." Thin flingers scratched at the strap hooking the mask to her ear. "I guess I should try something else next time." Reaching down, she grabbed a small bucket and splashed water over the fire; it fizzled after a few moments as the last bits of smoke faded. Yet, the smell of the plant did not. Therefore, Mya kept the mask on as she turned towards the other girl again.
"Sorry about that. I ran out yesterday and was trying to make somemore. Unfortunately, things aren't quite as they are at the Hall."

"Hall or not, you shouldn't be having trouble making a salve no matter where you are. It's all about knowing what to do, and using what's available to you."
Yulu didn't like excuses, and this girl seemed to be offering one along with her apology for the smoke and the smell. Pouring water on the fire like that so quickly did indeed make most of it go out, though Yulu took a step back as she waited for the ashes to roar. It wouldn't be long before whatever was smoldering spread itself, as Yulu had seen happen before. There was a boy with her at the time who didn't make it out so well, good thing the salve they were finishing up was for bad burns.
"But I didn't come in here to lecture, I came to see if you were okay. That was a lot of smoke and a lot of people are going to be having scorched lungs for a while."

Mya sighed and shook her head, smiling at her own foolishness. The gal was right, she shouldn't be making excuses. Nor should she be trying to smoke out her own home.
"I guess that serves me right." Moving back towards the bundle of Numbweed on the stone shelf, pale hands unwrapped the bundle and pulled out another small plant to the girl. "I was actually trying an experiment in an attempt to combine Numbweed, which of course numbs the wound, and this." The plant she now held had familiar reddish-purple flowers and a faint scent lingering about it. "We normally use Redwort at the Hall as an antiseptic, so I thought I would see how they combined."
A faint giggle and a wave at the pot showed just how successful her results were. "My Master always said I shouldn't let my mind get the best of me at times."

"Hm, I'd never really thought of combining Numbweed with anything else, given the fact that every time I work with it large batches are needed because of an accident. I can see how the idea of combining an antiseptic in to keep it clean would be an added benefit, but who are you going to test it on to see if it actually works?"
Yulu was not about to be a guinea pig, she'd learned a hard lesson on volunteering a long time ago. While her hair did grow back and her skin eventually returned to a more natural color, the desire to help in that regard had ebbed itself away when dealing with salves. She had no problems testing food though, but that was beside the point and another topic all together.
That being said, there really was no one around and Yulu didn't know anyone she could go and get. There was Y'kar, from before, but he probably would smart off at this ditz of a girl before her and Kannaroth wouldn't allow him to be possibly injured. That sort of ruled out anyone she knew, having only been here about five or six sevendays, so it left her as the only option.
But she wasn't going to offer herself up just yet. Instead, she turned her gaze towards the girl to get a better look at her. She'd been told by the rider who Searched her that she wasn't the only one coming from the Hall, there had been others, and since this girl looked just as fresh to the Weyr as she did, Yulu took it to mean her.
"We've met back at the Hall, yeah? I'm sure I've seen you before."

'That's what my thought was." Mya gathered up and neatly placed a few of her scattered supplies near the fireplace, quickly placing a bandanged hand on the pot to see if it had cooled down or not. A light sting told her not quite and she pulled the hand away before glancing back at the other girl. "If we had the ability to clean the area around a wound as well as numb it, it would probably help us as well as dragon and rider during to process."
She let the thought linger before shaking her head. "Of course, it is nothing more than an idea that's become a work in progress and as you said: I have yet to pick anyone to test it out on." Mya smiled slightly. Not that she would let that happen. If all else failed, she'd place it on her own skin. Her job was to heal, not to cause pain and discomfort to those near and far.
Pulling the mask down from her nose and mouth, the young healer placed a finger on her chin at Yulu's new statement: now that she pondered on it, Mya HAD seen someone resembling her at the Hall. Though it had not been for more than a moment or two and at a distance no less. "I think I may have but we never really spoke to one another face to face before this, yes?"

"I'm pretty certain. We probably had only a few lessons together, since I really know I didn't see you in the trauma lessons."
Yulu figured this girl dealing with trauma would probably result in a dead patient. Harsh thoughts to be sure, but she was going on what she'd seen - and Yulu was not impressed. Also, it helped to narrow down that at the time Yulu was one of the few girls learning about trauma, at least one of the few her own age.
"The name's Yulu. And you?"
She didn't take her mask off either when she addressed the other, wanting to keep her lungs as healthy and free of smoke today as possible. A healer getting sick seemed like such a ridiculous notion that she'd have to get angry if she ever caught a cold and someone dared rap on her about it.

"Probably. But the trama lessons I attended. Perhaps our classes were at seperate times?"
Mya could see from the start this girl would be a tough nut to crack: but now that she spent some time talking to her, Yulu had been upgraded from a tough nut to a piece of fresh steel. But she wasn't here to make enemies, she was here to Stand and to cure others if they needed it. Though a fellow friend among the healers would be nice.
"My name is Mya. Its nice to meet you, Yulu." Smiling, Mya held out a hand to the other. "After I clean up my mess, why don't we head over to the kitchens? We can talk a little more on the way."

"Sure, why not. It's a hazard if you leave this out too long anyway, and it does appear you've ruined this batch. Do you need help cleaning it up?"
They probably couldn't just pour it away somewhere and hope for the best, not with Numbweed anyway, and Yulu racked her brain to try and think of the proper way to get rid of all of this. There was the option of burying it somewhere, or simply dumping it down a drown that no one would be near/using for a while. Both ways involved a bit more work than she was willing to do, the desire lessened by the smell, but if Mya asked Yulu would indeed lend her a hand. She may have been mean, but she wasn't the type to refuse a request.

Mya, who had started washing off some of her instruments in a mixture of Redwort and water, paused and thought it for a moment before shaking her head.
"No, but thank you anyway. It's my mess and I should clean it. It won't take me very long." She smiled and motioned towards a small leather sack perched against the wall with her chin. "If you could though, and if it won't trouble you, could you grab a small, leather container I have in my bag?" Finishing her cleaning of the tools, the young healer carefully wiped them down with a clean rag before wrapping them in another one; some of the tools were carefully seperated from the others. "I usually take a small sample of whatever I experiment with, especially if it's a failure. That way, later on and far away from others, I can figure out what I did wrong."
As for getting rid of the rest... "Burying it would probably be our best bet. That way, we don't accidently dump it someplace that people use frequently." She smiled and chuckled a bit. "And don't worry about getting your hands dirty. I have an idea as to how to dig the hole."

"If we do bury it, let's make sure it's a good distance away from any water sources, or in an area with a slim chance of having run off. We may not be around when it happens, but I'd hate for either of us to get pegged over something so stupid."
Yulu wasn't worried about getting her hands dirty, she was a candidate after all, and she shook her head as she looked down at the wraps that decorated her fingers. They were in need of changing anyway, always stripped off her hands at the end of the day and washed or burned, so who cared if they acquired something other than sweat and dung today?
At the request for getting the container out of Mya's bag Yulu went and did so without any complaints or hesitation, tossing it over instead of walking it to the girl. If she missed it, not Yulu's problem.
Be more specific.

Catching the container with ease, Mya carefully scraped from of the failed combitation into it before resealing and placing it on the table next to her tools.
"We should have an easy time finding a place, considering we're going to be borrowing one of Echo's old hiding places." Smiling, she stood and pulled the gloves and bandages off of her hand; fixing them, she replaced them back on and moved to grab her bag near the wall. "If there's one thing I learned with being that lizard, it's to keep track of where she hides my belongings since she's bound to forget about them."
She laughed. "Not to mention finding a pile of numbweed in one of her holes will probably help teach her a lesson...if she ever bothers to re-use them."

"A flit hmm? Must be nice."
Yulu didn't have a flitt of her own, not for lack of interest in them, but she'd found it rather hard to get one while being an Apprentice. Being a candidate and getting an egg that way seemed to be downright impossible, as she believed that no one she knew with a flit would cough up an egg. L'pin's green would lay hers somewhere else and no one would find them, save the tunnelsnakes, so there went that only option.
Yulu moved to follow Mya, the mask still on her face. It made her look more masculine, if anything, to have most of her mouth covered and her voice muffled a bit. Her clothing was dirty and didn't cling to her in all the wrong (or right) places, making her feel better should they walk out into a place that was better lit and clearly not as smokey.
"I've always wanted one, they're perfect for study. How'd you get yours?"

Mya laughed and finished placing the mixture in the container, tossing the rest of her gear into her bag before heaving it over her shoulder with a grunt. "Nice it is, but an extreme handful at times. She's always finding a way to get into my stuff."
Nevertheless, Mya loved the little green flit and wouldnt exchange her for anything else in the world. Little Echo always had a way to brighten her day. Moving towards the doorway, Mya stepped to the side slightly to allow yulu to go first; "I got her as a gift from my father before I was sent to Healer Hall. Unfortunately, she only just recently joined me here in the Weyr..." She would have said more but a shrill squeal behind Yulu forced her to jump aside as a little flicker of sea-green came winking into existance from Between, tumbling head over tail without a great deal of control. just like she had been fleeing from something...or, most likely, someone with a wooden spoon.
"Speak of the lizard."
