Sit, young brothers and sisters. Sit, young and old. Sit, big and small, for I have a story to share with those who have time to spare. Come with me to the past, to a time where I was younger than now. I may not be old, but I have seen much. And it is time to share.
I tell this story to educate and to warn. Humes natural instinct is to be superior. Be wary, and be careful around even those you trust. Always share love for your elf brethren, and never, never, child... Never challenge a Hume without good reason. There will be consequences...
*Sigh* ... Thank you for listening... It helps to tell these stories. Even though the memories come to life again within me as I share, they disappear with honest storytelling. Thank you, again. *Bows*
It must have been about 25 years ago... Must have, for I was still working for Karen in the tavern in the Crystallized City. It was a sunday morning, so the bar was closed, and, even though I was tired from the late night before, I still took a walk early in the morning. It was just past dawn, and I wound up walking deep downtown, past the bar. I must have been miles away from home, completely unplanned was this trek... but it held a valuable lesson.
It was about midday, the sun was... alllmost in the center of the sky, when I sighted a mob in an alleyway. My natural curiosity got the best of me, so i traveled closer to investigate. Of course, even now, I wish I hadn't. I looked over men's shoulders to find 3 large Humes kicking and punching and torturing a small, young elf. My God, the poor child hadn't done anything wrong, I could tell in his eyes he was innocent. Sirens sounded, and more Humes, in uniform, appeared. They pushed aside the crowd (me especially, for some odd reason) and shooed away the suppressors.
But what I saw next shocked me to the bone. As people were leaving, no one but me watched as the officer Humes spat in the child's face and walked away without helping him up. I ran towards them, to help the child, not to harm the Humes, yet they took it as a threat and guarded themselves. I stopped myself before getting too close, and stepped aside to allow them to pass, but they pushed me out of the alleyway and stood before it until I was out of sight. I never did see those Humes again, nor did I ever see the child again.
The scenes and sounds haunt me even as I tell the story. It's as if it happened merely hours ago... The sounds of flesh harming flesh, the crowd cheering on the beating Humes, the spitting officers into the elf child's face...
