How could this have happened?

Lycoris paced anxiously back and forth in her field wearing the grasses down. The flower that had once be securely place in her tail rested on the bare ground to one side. Three of it's bright petals were missing.

How could she have been so careless?

Lying in the dirt just past the flower was the form of a young foal. Thin beads of sweat stood out against her dark coat in the light of the setting sun. A cracked bowl sat with water near the young foal's muzzle and aside from what had leaked from the creaks it remained undisturbed. A raspy noise came from the foal's mouth and Lycoris stopped her pacing to check on the poor creature.

Nothing seemed to have changed.

Lycoris sighed and her head drooped. This had all been her fault. She had always believed that she brought misfortune to others. This time it wasn't her presence that had caused the problem but the toxin in the flowers that she wore so casually. "I should have never spoken to her..." She whispered feeling tears welling up in her eyes. If she had never called attention to herself then the foal never would have come over. If she had never come over then she wouldn't have seen the flower and be so tempted to take a taste.

It was all her fault and she had no idea what to do.

He had crossed this field before. He had done so in passing, just as he was now. He remembered it vividly, because at one point it was a scene painted with flowers of every color. Now with the cold weather, the colors just didn't seem to pop as much, and he had grown accustomed to the smell of decaying plants.

There was something that did stick out about this field in memory though. The last time he had carelessly walked through it, stepping on budding flowers. A mare had scolded him for doing so. He looked down at the thought, berating himself for his carelessness.

He slowed as he began to pass the field, his golden eyes scanning it. He caught sight of the familiar mare, and almost immediately he felt embarrassed. Okay, so definitely this time he couldn't step on any flowers--

A foal?

Canaan cast aside his thoughts concerning the memory and focused on the scene ahead. The mare looked concerned the the foal... Looked like it was sleeping.

It probably would have been sensible to leave them alone. It was maybe a family issue and the father was coming back soon. But now struck with concern for the mare and the foal... He couldn't just walk away.

He cleared this throat, and took a careful step on a bare patch of grass.

"Um, hey..." His voice was a deep rumble in his throat, unsure of where he was going with this.

Her head shot up with a startled jolt shaking a few tears loose at the sound of a vaguely familiar voice. Her body with slightly stiff out of nerves as she turned ever so slowly to gaze upon the owner of the voice. Memories came rushing back to to her as she recognized him. A familiar face in a still strange place...

"Hello..." She responded making an attempt to force a smile. It wouldn't come. Now simply wasn't the time for pleasantries as much as she wanted to be polite. Light brows came together as she lowered her gaze and muttered, "Now...is not a good time..."

Hoping to make him understand what was going on, and that she wasn't just being rude to be rude, she took a few hesitant steps towards the foal's form. She nudged at it's shoulder gently and was greeted by only a raspy intake of breath from the little dark one. The sound tore at her heart.

Before she knew what was happening she found herself choking on tears. Every breath the entered her rattled like a tree in a storm. She bit her lip in an attempt to quell the emotions that were raging in her heart. "I'm sorry...I'm sorry...I don't...I can't..." She shook her head finding that she was having an increasingly difficult time forming coherent sentences. "I'm so sorry..."
