One by one, kits emerged from the forest, just a few moments after Nix sent out the calling. The crowd wasn't extremely numerous, but it was sufficient. These were the brave ones, the ones who the rest of the Kits' futures depend on.
"Welcome, most spirited of Kits. There lies an ominous shroud of uncertainty over this land."
Nix waved her hand towards the sky above her, and sure enough, the clouds were moving as a massive storm was approaching, though there was no breeze. Flashes of bright purple could be seen when the clouds swirled and collided with one another. She returned to her speech;
Our goal is to find the origin of this force, be it good or bad, and seek out its purpose. If it is evil, we cannot sit around and wait for it to devour us. We must seek it out and destroy it first! If there is any second thoughts about your decision, it'll be best that you turn around now. There will be no going back once we set on this trail.
The most likely place where this unknown force could have stayed hidden for so long would be at the edge of the homeland. That is where we will journey towards. I can't promise this to be a safe journey, for even I don't know what we are about to find.
Nix lead the way into the shadows of the forest. It was nighttime, and normally there would be crickets chirping and the leaves would rustle from the wind, but this night was still. It was as though the forest itself was asleep and the faerie and the group of Kits were the only ones awake.
The closer they got to the source of the power, the more the sky seemed to have darkened. The clouds swirl more rapidly, as if it can sense the group that was coming towards them.

Star was taking in everything that Nix had to say, his ears perked and listening carefully while his eyes took in the already dark but contiuously darkening skies. No sound could be heard except for Nix's soft voice as she continued on with her talking and the air seemed to be filled with a heavy weight, unseen and assumably not actually there. Lightning could be anticipated from the dark, cloudy night, and Star kept thinking he would see the bright yellow streaks across the sky any moment, but none came. In a way, he was hoping for it. It was simply way too quiet and way too dark.
Staring up at the purple/black clouds, the colors of darkness and evil, Star couldn't help but wonder, "What was going to happen? Why was this happening?" When he came out of his daze(of course he had been paying attention! Sort of...), he noticed that the faerie had stopped talking and was getting ready to leave with the other kits. Not wanting to be left behind, after all, he wanted to be on this journey as much as he didn't, he got up from lying on the dirt and grass floor. His limbs a little bit stiff, he was a bit tired but filled with energy, he stretched a bit before trotting to catch up to the others, with Nix in the lead. It was of course going to be a dangerous adventure, and the danger could already be felt in the air, and although Starlight had barenly been on anything dangerous, he just knew something was coming.

Koko listened to Nix with her full attention as the fairy told the other Kit's and her self about the nature of this quest. When Nix asked one last time if any wished to stay, Koko sat up straighter proudly to non-verbally say she would go. She gracefully got to her feet when Nix started to lead them all away and quickly took point on the right and behind the silver fairy like a following guard. As they walked she took in the sight, scent and sounds of the almost dead like night, watchful of any thing that may or may not go wrong at this point. Each hoof step she and the others made the soft rustling of the grass and leaves of the small plants she brushed against was reassuring her that she was on the right path and was right to choose to help her home land.
Koko looked over at the others as they walked along and was both sad and happy, sad there were so few but happy that there was others of equal or greater courage then herself. She scanned the faces of her quest mates and memorized them so she would always know who were the ones to take this dangerous adventure. Her midnight blue ears twitched as she caught the sound of running water not to far from where they were walking, and it sounded as if they would come upon it at one point of time. 'I do hope it is a shallow crossing that we find if we have to cross it.' She thought to herself with a thoughtful frown. 'Or maybe at least there shall be a bridge, either way, if we end up having to swim in deep enough water it may be hazardous for who knows what we may find in the deep?'

The sound of rushing water become louder and louder as the group neared the river, but they've gone so deep into the forest that it's become quite impossible to see anything. Nix did not know how close they were to the river nor now wide it was; whether it was safe to go trudging through it.
She took her steps cautiously, for the river must be somewhere really close by... her foot sank into the muddy banks of the river. Great... she thought. This was what I've been trying to avoid doing! Nix begrudgingly wiped the mud off her foot on a nearby rock. Doesn't matter now, we're going to be crossing this river, so I can clean the mud right off. Unless the water is muddy, too. That would not be very nice at all. I can fly, but the Kits... She looked left, right, then left again, but try as she might, she could neither see where the river starts nor ends.
"It seems like the only way to the other side is to cross the river. Has anyone been here before; does anyone know whether it's safe to cross?"

Star couldn't see anymore, it was simply too dark. He tripped over something, he wasn't sure what, and muttered a 'sorry', hoping it wasn't another kit's tail. Rushing water was heard up ahead, and Star assumed this was the river that he was told by his owner not to cross. Now, he could see why. The ground was already getting soggy, and it would take a long time to clean all the mud off. But that was the least of Star's worries now. It was too dark, to see where the river was and how hard far to the other side. If they couldn't cross, would this be the end of the journey? Star hoped not.
Star replied to Nix's question. "I was told not to cross this river, or at least I think it was this one, so I haven't been here before. Is it possible for you to fly us over somehow?"

He raced across the forests, the little glowing light just ahead of acting as his guide. He knew he was late to answer the call, he could tell just by the urgency and speed with which the little faelight moved. They were normally slow-moving, dimming and shining as they faded in and out of the visibility of those near them. It zoomed to the right and he nearly tripped trying to follow it's sharp movements.
He loved fast movement but this was ridiculous. He'd never moved with such emergency before.
They came to a clearing where a group of Kits were gathered around a faerie. He was far behind them and was about to shout to them when they entered the forest.
"How late am I?" He said to himself, having just noticed that the little red light had disappeared.
He sped up again, dashing into the forest after them. The deeper he went the wetter the ground got. Luckily he managed to keep from sinking into the mud.
'Mud...' He thought to himself in discomfort. Mud meant water or rain, prospects he did not want to have to deal with.
He looked about for the group as he ran, not thinking to slow down. He turned off slightly and by the time he'd seen the group he was already running past them. He looked back and tried to stop moving, slowing down just before the river bank. It was only then that he became aware of the sound of the river, having been blocked by his focus on catching up. He turned to face forwards and saw the rushing mass before him. He skittered back in alarm, flopping on his behind in embarrassment at the thought of almost falling into the water and making a fool of himself in front of the group of strangers.
Slowly he raised himself to his feet and looked at all of them in turn, a slight red hue to his face.

The mud had been slowly getting deeper where Koko walked and she had only just managed to keep from sinking in like Nix did when they came to a stop. The young Kitalpha tried to peer into the darkness to see the river but couldn't make anything out but more shadows. She heard Nix ask if any one knew of the river and a Kit not to far away from her answer the best he could. "My Lady Nix, since we can't see much farther then the tip of our snouts with out it just being shadows, would it be possible to create a light like or almost like your message leaves?" Koko asked thoughtfully.
Before she could continue any other questions she might have thought, Koko heard the sound of something running through the forest and she quickly turned to study where the sound was coming from. To the Kit's surprise what looked like a young dark colored Kitalpha ran past the small group. She flinched lightly when the Kit almost toppled over into what looked like the darkened river that was flowing by them. "Are you alright?" she asked the other dark Kit. She took a step towards him to help if he needed any but almost sunk into the mud and had to back up again.

Nix blinked at the latecomer. "Seems we have another guest. Better late than never." She hoped this little one wouldn't be the one to slow them all down, or worse.
Oh, of course, Nix, she told herself. You can do magic, come up with an awesome plan to save everything! But there was nothing in the books about mud or crossing rivers with unknown widths.
The light problem, she decided, would come first. Nix called out unspoken words to the fireflies of the forest. She waited. And waited. None came. That is odd. Well, what else do you remember in those books?
"I tried calling to the fireflies, but it seems the unknown power is keeping them from coming." She reached blindly for a twig. It wasn't difficult to find one. She pinched the end she wasn't holding on to, and the tip ignited into a brilliant yellow flame.
"I hope none of you are afraid of fire?" She continued plucking twigs and handing one to each of the Kits. Now that that's done with, back to the major problem at hand.
She peered out across the river once more, looking for any signs of what to do next. There seemed to be a tiny flicker of light across the river where there wasn't before. She squinted to make sure she wasn't seeing things. Sure enough, it was a light source.

Star took one of the twigs with fire. He held it in his mouth, trying not to think of the awful taste of mud and dirt. He could see clearly now, except the stupid branch was right in front of his line of sight! He tried moving it around in his mouth a little, a bit disgusted as he thought about it, so he could see better. A bit to the left, and then his left side was blinded. A bit to the right, and then he couldn't see with his right eye. Sighing, as much as he could without spitting out the stick, he brought it back to in front of him in the middle, holding it as far away as he could. Star didn't enjoy having a fire so close to the front of his face. What if the wind blew straight at him? Then his face would catch on fire and closely followed the rest of him. Roasted Starlight wasn't a very pleasant thought. Plus, Nix wouldn't be so happy that a kit had caused the burning of the forest she so dearly loved and took care of.
Star waved the twig around slowly and carefully so he could see the others. Someone else had arrived, another kit he knew wasn't there before. The kit's fur was black, except for some red and orangish yellow, which was on a hat and on something he wore on his body. Star then turned to the other, a dark blue kit with feathers in her black hair. The others weren't here yet, or they simply were in front of him, and he couldn't see past the flame in front of him. Then he turned to Nix, the faerie who had started and lead the whole adventure. He tried to say, "Are we going to cross the river now?" although it ended up sounding like "Ar weh goiwinh hoo cwos ah wiva ow?" Star suddenly realized that he could have just held the twig with his tail instead! After realizing his stupidity and after feeling like running into a tree(there were plenty of them of course in the forest so it wouldn't be hard to find one!), Star wrapped his silvery tail around the twig, the part close to his mouth. After bring it away , he spent an almost spent a whole minute spitting out all the dirt and mud and whatever else from his mouth. He held the twig away from his face as far as possible, but slightly to the side so if the wind were to blow, it wouldn't hit him as much. "It's better than holding it in your mouth." Star thought, sighing. He then turned to Nix again, now fully able to talk except for some of the dirt taste in his mouth that made him want to hurl. He said, "So, are we going to cross now?" He gestured with his torch to the other side of the river, where it was a bit unknown because the light couldn't reach that far. The many mini fires seemed to lighten up the atmosphere a bit, but it seemed as if the darkness was surrounding the light, making the fire shine as little as possible.
It was when Star was gesturing to the other side that he saw the small, barely perceivable light on the other side. "Whoa, what's that?" He turned to the others, to see if they saw the light too.

Koko took the makeshift torch with her tail, respectively making sure not to get it too close to the others or the forest. She looked over at the new comer as was relieved that he seemed unharmed but kept in mind that not all things can be what they seem. Her sliver eyes took in her companions, or at least the ones she could see any way. The newest Kit had black fur and had some red and yellow clothes on that looked uncomfortable to Koko and yellow eyes while the other Kit in her line of sight was a silver colored male that had blue and green marking in his furr and mix matched eyes. The young Kit close to her also had on a white and gold hat on his head that had a feather sticking out of it and he had a quiver with arrows and a crossbow strapped to his back.
Koko watched as the male next to her fumbled with his torch and was about to ask why he didn't use his tail when she saw he realized that his self. The midnight blue Kit shifted her focus and found a natural path of river rocks then stepped up onto them to get out of the mud and to look around better. From her vantage point she saw the light the others were looking at and she peered across carefully. "It looks like it's moving." She muttered to her self then looked up and down the river bank to see if there was a fallen log they could cross.

Nix muttered an spell under her breath, and branches flew from various locations behind the group. They assembled themselves end to end, floating in midair to form a makeshift bridge towards the flickering light across the river. There were no handrails or anything to keep anyone crossing from falling in if they slipped, but thankfully, Kits are pretty nimble with their feet and the branches were not too narrow. Hopefully, the light source is from somewhere on the land across the river and not on a boat.
"Whatever that light is coming from, we are going to find out. Don't worry, I'll try to catch you if you fall. Volunteers to be first?" announced Nix.

Star rose his paw. "I'll go first, I guess." He started across the bridge, holding the torch in front of him to make sure his next step was going to be on the bridge and not into the dark, cold water. The bridge was a bit ...strange...well it was obviously, but Star wasn't used to a bridge without any supports except for magic. Besides the fact that Star has never seen a faerie use magic let alone seen a bridge held together by magic. He didn't doubt Nix's abilities but he couldn't help but doubt the bridge. But he had to cross it anyways.
Making a slight leap to get onto the bridge, after all, it was above the ground and the river, he landed gently on the slight bit that was over the ground and not yet over the river yet, just to make sure he wouldn't miss the jump for whatever reason. He started crossing, his tail pointing the blazing branch a bit above his back so he could maintain his balance as well as not get burnt. It was silent except for the slight clacking of his hooves against the wood. At one point, Star made the mistake of gazing down into the river. Not only did the movement of his head mess up the balance, but it also made him a bit scared to be over the river. Quickly and carefully, Star wrapped his tail around the bridge, but dropped his torch in the process.
Star cursed as he saw the dim light shrink as it fell and it finally vanished as the fire was put out by the river and the branch sunk. He knew he shouldn't have looked down, he really shouldn't have, but he was really fascinated by the view. He still was. The water was dark, he could see the rough silvery image of himself and the glow from the branch before it fell into the water. But it was the water that amazed him. Never had he been able to look down into the river like he just had. The river seemed to go on and on and on, and it felt like if something were to fall in, it would never reach the river's bottom. Star continued on, squinting as he tried to make out the rest of the bridge from the dim light behind him and the increasingly growing light in front of him...getting larger and brighter with every step..."

Koko watched the silver male start across the bridge and tried to keep an eye out for any problems he might have. Farther and farther from the shore he walked and more Koko became nervous that something might happen. She walked over to the bridge carefully and waited close by in case she was needed in any way. The water flowed close to her feet, brushing against the smooth rocks she stood on every so often. Her silver eyes took in the dark water as it reflected the torch light.
She leaned carefully closer to the water, trying to find the bottom of the river and just when she thought she saw something she heard a splash. With a start she looked up, afraid that the Kit had fallen in and was glad that he was fine and it was only his torch that fell. When Koko saw he started to walk carefully again she grew worried that he would fall in if he miss stepped in the darkness. Carefully jumping onto the bridge, she made her way to him as quickly as possible to bring him her torch.

His cheeks darkened, returning to their natural color as he calmed down. He smiled bashfully at the group, waving with his tail. He looked around at each of his companions with curiosity before the faerie offered him the burning twig.
He took with glee, his bashful smile now a grin of childish enjoyment. He waved it to and fro with his tail, loving how the flames danced with each movement. He was careful not to swing it too hard though, he couldn't have it outing on him now could he. He might've stood there for the rest of the journey playing with it had the fae not spoken up again. At the mention of crossing the river his smile faded, displeased with having to cross water in any way.
He was comforted slightly by the bridge, but not much. He climbed on hesitantly, look from side to side as he walked. His tail held high with the twig, he stepped carefully. Falling into the water would be one of the worst things that could happen right now. Especially water as dark as that under him.
Raising his head, he focused on the tiny source of light ahead of them. It was another comfort to him along with the bridge. He wished the others ahead of him would hurry so he could be away from the water and nearer the light.
