Normally, training in itself was harsh.
Flying at top speed hundreds of feet above the ground, sharp manuvers to avoid the deadly Thread that falls from the sky and to avoid ramming another dragon by accident, practice handing firestone from rider to the dragon in a moment's notice...
Adding in the colder weather of fall and winter that was swiftly approaching the mountainous Weyr and the constant going between to prepare for possible Threadscore, it was a small wonder the Wings didn't come back human/dragon icicles at the end. Even with the protection of thick riding leathers, that never stopped the cold.
Today's practice seemed like it had been especially difficult; the Wingleader looked to have been in a bad mood and worked them all to the bone. But the horror was over and most had either retreated to the Springs, their weyr or the kitchens for a spot of warmth. A Blue Rider pair was one of those hitting the Springs' warm waters, but not without a quick trip to the kitchens beforehand.
Now with a fresh loaf of bread in hand and a small cup of Klah, G'ind sitting on the edge of the Springs with his feet in the water. Out in the deeper water, the only thing visable of his dragon was everything above his lower jaw; Varoth could not have been happier than he was then, if the constant stream of warmth and contentment going through his rider's mind was anything to judge by. Mine, let us stay here for the rest of the night. It is wonderful.
We cannot. Sooner or later, we'll have to return to the weyr to sleep. And I can't reach it without you.
A small snort sent bubbles to distrub the surface of the water, yet his eyes did not change from their bright green/blue. Very well then. But we must stay here for a while longer. Otherwise I refuse.

"I'm done." With this assertion, Kannaroth set her feet back on the bottom and waded towards the shore until she could lie down. "Swimming is hard," she said to Hers with a soft sigh, "very hard. My legs are tired, my wings are tired, even my tail is tired. If this wasn't so good for me I'd eat fruit rather than do it." It built up muscles that needed building, but that didn't make it any easier or more fun. The proliferation of other people didn't make her any happier; seemed there were more dragons and humans appearing every second! "I wish they'd stop staring," she growled, eyes flashing red, "it makes it so hard not to tell them exactly what I think of them. Dead glows, wherry heads, lazy, stupid, brainless followers. Despicable."
Y'kar sighed, sculling lazily towards his lifemate. "I know. It's been a tiring day, and now there's idiots to deal with as well... See anyone nearby not focusing on us? They'd be a good bet not to be total tailforks, and if we're in conversation those who would like to say nasty things to us might not bother." Maybe he'd even make a contact, you never knew your luck.
"Humm... That one," Kannaroth drew her rider's attention to the man with the bread and the klah, "I think he's a rider, but he might be one of those who doesn't give a toss about us."
Might well be. Y'kar turned over, now swimming a languid breaststroke in the man's general direction... Shards he was a big b*****d. The young rider rose to his feet a short distance from the man and dashed water from his face. Then he turned slightly and startled, as if noticing him for the first time. "Oh, hi there," he offered a sheepish smile, "didn't spot you, I was talking to Kannaroth... Mind if I join you? I'm pretty worn out from swimmig backwards and forwards for so long." And lo, the bait was set.

Mine? What troubles you?
Hm? Nothing, Varoth...I'm just thinking.
About the recent Hatching? Varoth rose his head up a little out of the water as a small amount of yellow found itself mixed in the natural teal of his eyes. Most of the Weyr seems more interested in forgetting about the young ones. Yet, when they came out of the shells, you seemed...interested, Chosen.
G'ind sighed and took a small sip of his Klah with a half-smile lingering on his lips. Well, how could I not be? I mean, they seem to- His thought was cut off at the greeting. Glancing up, he blinked a few times to clear his train of thought before grinning up at the young man. "Hey there, it's quite alright. I was talking with Varoth up until a second ago." He motioned towards the Blue who settled back down into the waters. "I apologize if I seem a bit out of it."
The rider motioned for Y'kar to come and sit down. "Feel free to. I certainly don't own the Springs, though I think my dragon wouldn't mind that possiblity right now. And I could use some company, especially after the training session we just went through." He chuckled and offered the lad some of the Klah he had brought with him. G'ind had brought a little much from the kitchens and couldn't down it all himself.

Y'kar accepted the klah with a smile and sat back down in the water, close enough to the other rider to talk comfortably, but far enough in to be up to his chest in warm water. "Thanks," he said with a nod, sipping at the hot brew with a happy sigh, "I know you don't, but there's plenty of space to spread out... I know not everyone is too fond of me and the others who Impressed at the last hatching, so I really don't want to make it worst by imposing myself on people who feel like that." Most emphatically not, people set against him from the beginning would be very hard to win over; unless they were really very important he was not prepared to try.
"My name's Y'kar by the way," he went on, "it's nice to meet you."
Kannaroth meanwhile was scanning for the rider's lifemate. It would be the closest one... now there was a green over there, a blue lazing on the shore there, another green a bit off to the left... But each of those was closer to another human than this man, so they probably weren't his. Giving up on the surface, Kannaroth dipped her head under water. It didn't take her long to identify the most likely suspect, a blue, but she assessed the other nearby dragons too. She would like very much to be sure which of them was listening to Hers speak with the tall man, so she planned to watch them all for some sign that would give her a clue. She did not like the idea of not knowing who knew what Y'kar was saying.

"Oh, I know how much room there is here. But I really don't feel up for much of a soak right now." He chuckled softly and pulled off another chunk of the bread, popping it into his mouth and chewing thoughtfully. "If I could, I would sneak back to our weyr and steal a few moments of sleep."
He swallowed and smiled down at the Green Rider, offering a hand to shake at his introduction. "It's nice to meet you, Y'kar. I am G'ind, Rider to Varoth..." he motioned out towards the water. "Who's probably out there somewhere right now." He then went to the topic of the hatching, something that had always been repeated in his mind since that day. "Personally, I think you and your Chosen, plus her sisters and Riders, did something amazing that day. When they all hatched, I think they shook the foundations of our very Weyr and shook up some old belief-holders took." He snickered into the back of his hand. "Personally, I think they're probably some of the strongest Greens that have ever hatched here. They could probably even take on the Weyrleader if they wanted to, given some time."
And G'ind wasn't spewing out random comments; the young Blue rider actually did admire the three greens.
Varoth, meanwhile, was starting to push himself from the hot waters. He gripped the stone and pulled, broad wings flapping slightly the help pull himself out before he shook away the remaining waters with a small snort. You act as if Mine is going to bite your own, young one. Teal eyes glanced over towards the splash of rich emerald just a little ways from him. I understand how wary one can be, but there is no need to now. Mine wishes no harm upon Yours.

He shook the proffered hand. "They are strong," Y'kar allowed the smile of a proud rider to spread across his face, tinged with pleased surprise that somebody else saw their merit. "Nellath is brave, very strong, and a lot smarter than everyone thinks. Roseth seems to have something of everything; really there's nothing she's bad at and Kannaroth..." he trailed off and turned to look at his lifemate, his smile widening to a grin. "Well she's just brilliant." How exactly had they shaken the Weyr? This superior sod was just being condescending. Nellath was not the first to kill, and that other green was not the first to go between. The only thing that might have shaken the Weyr was the number of eggs, and that only because a queen had managed a new low. Perhaps he wasn't insincere; perhaps, just perhaps... Y'kar supposed it might be possible that the man was a total idiot. Shook up beliefs? Really? Which specific beliefs would those be, beanpole?
The youth shifted slightly, his grin fading to a slightly shyer expression. "It's nice to meet somebody who can see how special they are. I don't know about taking on the Weyr, but we'll prove that we're worth something in the end." If they did take on the Weyr and win, the first thing he would do was decree that idiots like this one had to wear some kind of warning sign so that he could avoid them when he was busy with work, and seek them out when he wanted something to scorn.
"Oh my," Kannaroth sneered at the elder dragon, "my poor little heart. I was so afraid that your big stretched out rider was going to cannibalize Mine. Thank you for putting my silly little fears to rest, oh noble and generous blue. Let's get one thing straight," the green went on, her tones harshening, "I do not fear any action that your rider might take, I do not fear you, I do not fear anything that this world has shown me so far. You think you are better than the ones who casually dismiss my sisters and myself, but you are mistaken. You are just as bad, just as foolish, and just as good at incurring my wrath!" Growling, the dragonet pulled back her lips to show her teeth. "Finally remember this; I am far more intelligent than you, blue, and I do not appreciate being patronized by creatures of inferior intellect."

Varoth stared down at the green with unwavering teal eyes, no emotion displayed for all to see. Such harsh words coming from someone so young, such hate for the world and those living in it. With a grunt and a few splashes, the stocky Blue grabbed and pulled himself from the Spring's water while carefully sidestepping around Kannaroth; but not before he paused and glanced over at his Rider and Kannaroth's Own. No words were exchanged between the two as the Blue turned towards the hatchling once again. I am glad you do not fear the world around us, nor those of those who live within it. Yet, you state one thing wrong. Who said I or Mine dismiss you or your rider? I am not patronizing you and I accept the fact your horizens are broader than my own. He stood firm, even as fangs were displayed.
G'ind watched the exchange between Varoth and Kannaroth with interested eyes, glancing over at the lad next to him from time to time. Was the pair really that angry at the Weyr and everything beyond? So much so that a small amount of friendly words have fallen on deaf ears? "That's good." He smiled and stood up with a grunt, brushing away the dirt that clung to his leathers. But that's when words failed him and he glanced at his dragon. However, the blue was a little busy with the hatchling at the moment.

Kannaroth laughed. "Learn to listen, deadglow," she snorted, "I said you think you are better than the ones who dismiss us, thus implying that I am aware that you are not dismissing us. Still with me?" A sneer. "Good. If that's sorted out, perhaps we should work on the definition of patronizing too; to patronize is to behave in a condescending manner, to treat another like a simpleton. I am willing to accept that you did not mean to patronize me, but intentions are not actions blue. That is why you have earned my scorn, because you are a small-minded fool, apparently one who can't even listen."
Y'kar cleared his throat nervously, glancing over at his dragon and then back to G'ind. "Err... I'm not quite sure what she's saying, but I'm certain it isn't nice," he offered the tall man an awkward smile. "I... I hope she's not being too awful. I've tried telling her that being horrible is only making her position in the Weyr worse but she doesn't seem to want to listen... I hope she doesn't upset Varoth at all." This man was just an unranked blue rider, but he had the potential to be useful, as anyone did. Keeping on his good side as much as possible for now was a good plan.
Kannaroth turned to glare at her rider as he spoke up, her eyes flickering a brighter orange. "I'm saying something cutting to you," she said privately, "disapproving of you talking like that about me to him." Dragons, of course, could not force their eyes to take on a colour that suited their purposes at the time, but Kannaroth had become extremely adept at thinking of things that annoyed her when she wanted to look a bit angrier, and the effect came out the same as if she genuinely was peeved with the person she was addressing.
Y'kar shifted awkwardly and reached out to stroke Kannaroth; she lent out of reach. "Sorry Kanna," he muttered quietly, "but it's true. You're just making things worse, for both of us."
