My friend and I were talking on the phone last night about the US and government and such... then we started talking about solving our own country's problems instead of others first.... So we were talking about the border problems and the amount of tax money that goes into that... then we started talking about the welfare system, and using it....

Do you ever find white people in the GD saying how the blacks "use tax payers money cause they are too lazy to get off their asses and get a job".
Excuse me, you missinformed fool, white women have the highest numbers in using welfare. rolleyes

When you go into stores, do you 'stalked', followed, or watched? I used to find it slightly amusing, but now it's just plain annoying. We have off campus lunches and I watch my white friends from school go in and steal up a storm - coming back with 7 packs of gum, enough candy to start a small store, and I've even seen them steal drinks. It amazes me how much white store owners and such single out one group of people...
It reminds me of that one episode of Sister, Sister. And Don't Be A Menace to... I forgot the rest of the title razz

Even at my own job - my brother came in Marshalls one day looking around before I got off, and my manager just sat their and watched him while he browsed.
I've seen white lady's walk through the exit even though the alarm is going off, without anyone stopping them. I've also seen a family of hispanics leaving and the alarm goes off - needless to say, that's the fastest I've ever seen my manager moving.

So what is it that causes this? I'm really leaning towards the media, since white people "search for food" and black people "loot" for it.

Discuss:
- Have you ever been racial profiled?
- What do you think causes these stereotypes and misconceptions?

I have never really been profiled.
But I mean it's like people need to fear something so they will fear another race. You also see the media playing on that fear.

An addition... My family has a Chrysler 300...

Before we moved from St.Louis, he and my mom were still there and he had the car at night.... Two nights in a row he got pulled over. One saying that a lot of those cars have been stolen rolleyes and another cause he dropped something on the floor and the picked it up and swerved a little...
Uhm. The second one makes sense... but the other one? Psh...

[Sometimes it's all about the environment.
I've been watched carefully in a store before, and gotten the infamous "Are you finding everything okay?" suspicious more than helpful remark. And my brother has been pulled over for "DWB" (driving while black) on several occasions. Sometimes he's a reckless a*****e on the roads though. rolleyes So I dunno. Sometimes it depends on where you are: Black clerks might watch black shoppers more so than white ones, especially if it's a store staffed by mostly whites.

And sometimes it's all about how you carry yourself. For example, a black lady who was originally from my state was just recently profiled in a local paper: she had been a jewel thief for decades. She didn't use force--just a perfected method of confusion. 3nodding And the way I read the article, she got away with it more times than she didn't, even though she is now in prison.

So in my opinion, it really just depends on why people do it. Maybe it's their upbringing, or the environment; or maybe certain people racially profile others on a case-by-case basis...]

Stereotypes aren't created by the actions of a few, but by the actions of many. Think about that for a while.

actually, stereotypes are created by the perceptions of many of the actions of a few. the majority of Black people aren't going around stealing cars and jackin' people for their belongings. we merely see them the most often because it's a very sensationalist society.

i'm pretty sure the point of the thread is that one shouldn't have to get used to it.

It gets on my nerves when they follow you around, and periodically ask you if you're 'Finding everything ok.' Even at the school library I'm watched by this one old lady...sad, really. I've never stolen anything (since I was 5, anyway. Doesn't count gonk ) in my life.

And like Disruptive said, I've actually SEEN white people steal. Here's what they do; they wait by the door (say, at Dillards) for a black person to walk through. Then they walk through at exactly the same time, but of course, the black one is stopped.

3 out of every 5 black males ends up in prison or some other form of a correctional facility. 3 out of 5. That is a majority that is ******** up.

The point of the thread is insignificant. Bitching will not change it, and no matter what you will always be stereotyped. You can b***h and hold a grudge, or you can deal with it, and move on. 3nodding

[Is that "3 out of 5 ends up in prison or some correctional facility," or "3 out of 5" have been arrested or sent to prison, etc.?? I have trouble believing the statistic as you've stated it. But statistics deal with averages too, and THAT'S ******** up, because I could line up 5 black males and NONE of them have been to prison OR been arrested. cool

I take Kenai's statement to mean not that she's bitching about it, but that most people don't sit back and notice that we are very acttracted to the "sensational;" the things that attract people to reading the newspaper or watching the news, both of which are known sources for reaporting death, distruction and wrong-doing. We get excited when we have something to hate, to be surprised (pleasantly or not) about.]
