It was early in the morning, before the sun had fully risen from beneath the horizon. Pale, dawn light cast long shadows across the Weyrbowl. Most of the Weyr's residents still slept, tucked away warmly beneath thick furs and blankets. But early mornings were a luxury Daeluin could no longer afford. With a hatchling firelizard, the break of dawn was the perfect time for a first feeding.

SKRAAAAWK! SKREEEEEEEEE~ Tiki called out raucously from her precarious perch on Lulu's shoulder. Her talons dug in painfully despite the padded shoulder-piece the young woman wore. "I'm heading to the kitchens now, you shardling thing," she cursed, trying to avoid knocking the screaming green to the ground while tying her messy, rumbled, fresh-out-of-bed hair back with a ribbon. "Faranth, have you no patience?" Daeluin demanded as Tiki cried out again. The entire Weyr must think the green had been starved for days!

Luckily for Daeluin, the kitchen staff left out a bowl of scraps for just such an occasion. She briskly walked into the kitchen on bare feet (FARANTH, the floor was cold!) and took a seat on a three-legged stool. As she pulled the bowl of scraps closer, Tiki half-fell half-flew onto the table and met the bowl half way. She gripped the edge with her forepaws, pulling herself up in her hind legs to snake her head in and steal a piece. Daeluin was quick to rebuke the green, with a curt bop on the nose.

"Mind your manners!" she chided Tiki sternly, frowning and shooing the green away from the bowl. Tiki wasn't happy. SKREEEEEEE! SKREE! SKREEEE! She screamed her displeasure, but Daeluin silenced her by tossing a piece of meat in the air. The green hatchling caught it deftly and swallowed, rumbling happily as she was fed. Daeluin repeated the process, again and again, hoping that Tiki would be sated soon. She REALLY wanted a mug of hot klah!

Climbing out of bed far before the sun had risen was nothing new to Nadia, her mother often pulled her out of her bed hours before the sun rose and as she grew the habit stuck. Pinning back her hair, throwing on a soft cloth shirt and snatching Sirve, her blue firelizard, out of his bed she hurried down to the kitchens. She had managed to convince the head baker to let her use a section of the kitchen for her own baking, the flipside of the deal was that she had to pay for any ingredients out of her own meager pay or through chores in the kitchens.

Sirve shook himself awake and climbed up to perch tiredly on her shoulder where he contended himself by pulling on her hair and squeaking when she poked him in retaliation. Slipping into the kitchen she headed straight for her little corner wondering what she should make today when Sirve huffed in her ear and then took to the air heading for another part of the kitchens, it was then that she heard the cries of another firelizard, a young one by the sounds of things; scrambling after him, she got hold of him before he went for the green firelizard. Nadia blinked at the other lady for a minute before grinning sheepishly.
“Sorry… he gets cranky this time of day.”

Despite being absorbed in her meal, Tiki recognized the threat before Daeluin realized anyone else had entered the kitchens. Incapable of anything but awkward, inexperienced flight, Tiki was really quite vulnerable. The green shrieked, a high-pitched, horrible sound that wrenched Daeluin's gut and shattered her hearing. She snatched the green lizard as she scrambled her way up Daeluin's front, hissing and shrieking madly in both fright and defiance. Lulu squashed Tiki in her arms, cuddling and soothing the green as best she could.

Daeluin's sheepish smile was equal to Nadia's. "Oh, no need to apologize," she insisted. "She's just as cranky, as you can see," Lulu pointed out matter-of-factly while stroking her green's exposed belly. Daeluin didn't recognize the girl and her blue; it would most likely be wise to make friends, get the two firelizards acquainted to assuage any sore feelings. "I'm Daeluin, or Lulu if you please. This is my green, Tiki. She's just a baby, so if she acts like a brat.. forgive her," Lulu introduced herself and the lizard with a giggle and a friendly smile. Tiki wasn't so happy, though. She chattered in a reprimanding tone at Nadia's blue, scolding him for frightening her so. Daeluin simply rolled her eyes/

Grumbling and hissing at the younger green Sirve curled against Nadia’s neck glaring at the younger firelizard, occasionally flicking his wings at Tiki and tugging on Nadia’s hair when she tried to hush him with pokes and prods, shifting her weight and ignoring her firelizard as he sent blurry images to her.

“It’s good to meet you…Lulu, I’ am Nadia and this grumpy old fellow is Sirve.” Reaching up to poke at his belly Nadia giggled as he curled closer to her neck and glared at Lulu and Tiki from over her ear. “He isn’t always so… disagreeable. So Lulu, what are you doing here at such an early hour? Most don’t wake till at least sunrise and even then for some it’s questionable.”

Removing her grip on Sirve she tug into her pocket and pulled out a bit of sweetmeat, she often had little bits of leftovers for snacking on as although she was used to waking early her stomach wasn’t, gently handing it to the green she waited to see if her peace offering was taken.

As soon as he was free Sirve leaped from Nadia’s shoulders and scooped down on the remains of Tiki’s breakfast, gulping it in only seconds, he sat perched on the table looking rather pleased with himself. Blinking at him Nadia just winced when he shoot images of the greens scolding’s followed by a sense of victory.

Even from her upside-down, prone and slightly embarrassing position cradled in Daeluin's arm, Tiki hissed and chittered angrily at Sirve. A rush of jumbled, angry-feeling images flooded Daeluin's mind, but she hardly had the patience to sort the out and decipher them. She simply sighed and shook her head. "She's been everything but agreeable since she hatched," Lulu admitted with a frown. "She's been absolutely ravenous, demanding, and acting quite the spoiled little thing," she reprimanded Tiki with a gentle poke to her belly.

"But, its nice to meet you both!" Daeluin agreed, turning her frown into a smile for the girl and her blue. "I had to come here this early just to feed her," Daeluin explained with a little laugh. She hardly could have stayed in bed with Tiki crawling all over her, squawking and demanding to be fed! She likely would have woken up the entire quarter if Daeluin had ignored her! Tiki stretched her neck out and grabbed for Daeluin's upper arm with her front claws, using Lulu as leverage to flip herself right-side up. The lanky, all-limbs green reached out to snatch the morsel of sweetmeat from Nadia, rumbling happily to herself as she chewed for a moment on the tasty offering.

But her happiness did not last very long. As soon as Sirve swooped down to eat the rest of her breakfast, Tiki bristled. How DARE he! She may have stopped eating long ago, but that didn't mean she was done! She would have finished it later! With scrabbling claws and flapping wings, the green pulled herself onto the table and scrambled towards Sirve, reaching out to n** him soundly on his back end. She chattered and squeaked angrily, her tone like a wife scolding her husband for some silly thing. With no harm done, Daeluin couldn't help but watch the pair and laugh.

Making a purring sound Sirve looked very content… that was until Tiki stormed over and started chattering and scolding him, looking at her Sirve drew himself up to his full size which was only about two inches bigger then she was and tried to look threatening as he returned her bite with a swipe from his wings although it was obvious that he wasn’t using his full strength.

Nadia giggled as she watched the two of them, shaking her head she ignored the two for now and turned her attentions back to Lulu. “So it be the trails of dealing with firelizard hatchlings, I’ve never been more glad that I didn’t get Sirve until he was already grown. By then he was far more independent then any hatchling would be. I think there’s some more food around here somewhere if she’s still hungry, what does she like to eat?” Glancing around the kitchen Nadia tried to remember where the cooks kept the firelizard meals but coming up blank. “Sirve likes to eat some of the sweet pastries, he has quite a sweet tooth. I could make her some, it wouldn’t take anytime at all.”

Sirve stood proud over wining the battle of wills but seeing the put out look on Tiki he squeaked at her and fluttered his wings trying to get her to come over a play with him, after all since it was now cemented that he was the winner between the two the green was now safe to play with.
Sending her firelizard a look Nadia just sighed at him.

“I’m glad she’s not hurt… sometimes he doesn’t know what he’s doing as well as he pretends too.” Reaching over she plucked him from the table and ignoring his squeak she tucked him under one of her arms letting him wrap his tail around her wrist. Blushing slightly at Lulu’s words Nadia nodded her head.

“I’ve been baking since I was a babe… there are some pretty easy biscuits that wouldn’t take long at all to make although there nothing like some of the pastry that is brought out for the big feasts…. If you wanted I could show you?”

"You'd teach me how to make them? Oh, that'd be nice! I'd like that a lot," Daeluin admitted with a warm smile for the girl. She knew how to cook, but only just barely. Every now and then back at home she would have to cook her own meal, or something for her and her siblings. There had been nights when her parents were busy with inventory, or something as equally time-consuming, which had left Daeluin to fend for herself, food-wise. She could make a decent stew (really, all you had to do was throw meat, vegetables, and a little bit of water in a pot) but that was about as far as her skill went. She couldn't refuse the opportunity to further her abilities!

Tiki ignored Sirve. Flat out ignored him. Oh, she could hear him squeaking at her, but she refused to acknowledge him after he had made her feel so.. embarrassed. Didn't he know you were supposed to let the lady win? Tiki snorted angrily, and squawked when Daeluin dumped her unceremoniously on the table next to Nadia's blue. But then Nadia retrieved Sirve and tucked him under her arm, leaving Tiki on the table by herself.

VICTORY! Tiki chittered happily and proceeded to prance around the countertop with her wings held flared and aloft, her tail stretched out for balance. The green trilled happily, making I'm-better-than-you noises in Sirve's direction tauntingly. Ha! What're you gonna do now, big boy?

Grinning Nadia nodded at her and pulled Sirve closer to her. “Sure, I can show you how to make some simple biscuits and things, although I’m a much better baker then cook.” Leading the way back to her section on the kitchen she pulled out a bunch of bowls from one of the cupboards. Ignoring the images and senses of retaliation that Sirve was pounding into her head as he glared daggers at the green as she paraded up and down the table, Nadia stuck him on the counter and while keeping one hand on him she grabbed some meat scarps and gave them to him.

“There, stay Sirve and leave her be. Here, hang on and I’ll grab everything we’ll need.” Grinning at Lulu, Nadia retied her hair back and went about grabbing everything they would need. A basket of eggs, a container of cold milk, flour, a bowl of sugar and some sweet berries and nuts. Serving everything she nodded in satisfaction, clapped her hands together and turned back to Lulu. “Ready?”

The long-limbed but small-statured green firelizard was RULER of the land known as Table Top! With her eyes closed and head held high, she strutted the length of the counter up and down, sashaying as she moved. Her tail lashed back and forth to counter-balance her motions; all in all, it was an amusing thing to watch. Especially since Tiki's mood went from victorious and bragging to defensive and violent with the drop of a pin! As soon as Nadia put Sirve down on the counter, with MEAT no less, Tiki became a hissing, snarling, shrieking ball of green fury! She threw her wings open to make herself appear bigger (She was younger, and therefore smaller, than the blue sharing the counter).

Daeluin rolled her eyes and would have rapped Tiki on the tip of her nose if she wasn't afraid of losing her fingertips. "If she gets nasty, I'll move her," Daeluin explained to Nadia matter-of-factly and turned her attention away from her green. There were more important things to do! Like, for instance, baking! Daeluin grinned at the girl's offer to teach, and she nodded. "Oh, I'd love that!" She eyed the motley assortment of ingredients Nadia set on the table and rubbed her hands together, ready to be taught!

Sirve sat perched on the counter eyeing the green firelizard with distain as he poked at the small pile of meat when an idea suddenly occurred to him and if firelizards could smirk he would be, watching the other firelizard he bent down and nosily eat the meat making sure that the green saw his every movement. He fluttered his wings and the part of his tail that was hanging off the counter twitched as he ignored the humans and completely focused on annoying the other firelizard.

Grinning Nadia nodded at her new friend and cast a glance back at the green firelizard who stood shrieking on the table, glancing at Sirve to make sure he was behaving she rolled her eyes at him when she saw what he was doing. Turning away from him she grabbed the bowls and passed some of the eggs to Lulu. “Here, lets start by cracking the eggs. Just tap them gently on the side of the bowl and pull apart the shells. Try and make it so that no shell falls into the bowl.” Expertly breaking the egg into the bowl she showed Lulu the steps. “Now you try.”

Tiki stopped making any sort of noise and just watched Sirve. Daeluin could have sworn the green was about to start drooling. As Sirve was nearing the end of his little snack, Tiki went off in a little hissy fit, shrieking and creeling angrily. Where was her snack? He got one, why didn't she? The young green threw open her wings and stood on her hind feet, crying out pitifully. Daeluin rolled her eyes and ignored the green's little tantrum, for the time being at least.

"She's such a brat, crying out for attention like that. She'll settle down," the dark-skinned girl assured her baking instructor with a sigh and a nod. Daeluin forced herself to focus on the task at hand and ignored Tiki's cries. "So, like this?" Lulu mimicked Nadia, grabbing an egg and rapping it against the side of the bowl. She split it open, but had to use both hands to pull the halves apart. Oh, shards. There goes a piece of shell!Right into the bowl. "Oh, oops," Daeluin said sheepishly, laughing. "I guess I should just dig that out," she said, dipping her finger into the egg white to chase around the bit of shall. "Shards, ugh. its so damn slippery!" She complained, removing her hand in frustration, sans shell.

Sirve gulped the rest of his snack down and then sent about happily cleaning himself as he listened with satisfaction to Tiki’s tantrum, happy once again he settled back and watched the green through half opened eyes, flooding Nadia’s mind with satisfaction and tingly warm feelings which seemed to grow when Tiki got louder. Nadia eyed him for a minute trying not to think about whatever must have been going through his mind, raising an eyebrow at him she turned back to her baking and ignored him.

Grinning Nadia reached peeked into the bowl and grabbing it through the egg and shells into the slop pale. “Don’t worry; it was a good first try. Here,” She handed Lulu another egg. “Not so hard this time, once you have cracked the shell just pull them apart gently.” Nadia mimicked the actions to her.

After several moments of throwing her fit, Tiki realized it was getting her nowhere. In fact, the only thing her screeched protests were doing was satisfying Sirve; we can't have that, now, can we? Tiki immediately closed her mouth, shutting off her vocalized protests mid-cry. She settled herself back on her haunches, sitting with her front arms held to her chest and her wings tucked tightly against her back. With green-yellow eyes, flecks of angry red making an intermittent appearance, she contented herself to glaring at Sirve fiercely.

Daeluin frowned. Who would have thought that cracking eggs could be so sharding difficult? She sighed, but didn't let her resolve waver. With encouragement from Nadia, she tried cracking an egg again. Tap, tap against the side of the bowl. Now, pull the two halves apart gently and slowly... There! The egg plopped happily down into the bowl without any trace of shell mucking it up. "Well! There we go, second try is the charm," she said with a grin for her instructor. "What next?"
