"BROTHER!"

It was about four o'clock in the morning when Eiry burst into Rivener's room, throwing himself through the wall as if he were escaping some fiery explosion. His red eyes were bright with frustration and red with sleeplessness, and as he waited for his sibling to wake, he swung his arms around his head, prompting the doors to tremble in their frames with his growing sigel powers.

"Brother, I can't TAKE it anymore! I simply cannot take much more of this ceaseless sobbing!" the sigel stormed in circles around Rivener's bedroom. His pajama shirt, that he now wore to bed, was partly torn open and slipping over his shoulder, exposing his pale skin, and his feathery hair was wild with tangles. "Brother mine, you promised me, you promised we'd seek the clarity to this endless tempest, I call on thee now, come play the part in the promise you bequeathed me! Help me end this torment for the sake of my sleeping self and that of poor Fletcher! Brother, awake!"

Rivener grumbled himself awake from the comfort of his blankets as the minty explosion that was Eiry swirled around his room in a huff. The Scorpion heaved a big sigh and listened with a frown to his brother's Shakespearean diatribe, making only half-sense to Riv's sleep-addled brain. "Ceaseless-...? Bequeathed? Torment? What are you-... Oh." Rivener's own frustration as he sat up was quickly eclipsed by the other Sigel's state; Eiry was in much worse shape than he. One dark eyebrow lifted up at the sight of torn pajamas, sunken eyes, and disheveled hair. Well, more disheveled than usual.

"Alright, alright. I can see he's been bothering you more and more, hunh? Well we can certainly- HOLY HELL, Eiry, do you know what TIME it is?" Riv grabbed the nearby alarm clock, glaring at the numbers and chucking the thing at Eiry's head (missing, of course). "It's ******** FOUR in the morning! I just went to bed like three hours-... Guh!" The Scorpion's protest died as he once again took in his brother's appearance. Three hours of sleep was most likely more than Eiry had gotten in a few DAYS, by the look of him. "Okay, get dressed. We'll go to Durem and hope the library's open." Riv got out of bed and prepared to go out, grabbing a favorite leather jacket, his camera, and a pocket full of hard-earned money.

If the Library wasn't open, then-... perhaps Eiry's Going-Through-Walls powers could be put to use to unlock the door? Riv smirked. Breaking the law! How fun! Even if it WAS only a small trespassing offense in a pretty harmless place...

Weariness was far from Eiry's mind and body. He was alive and quite active, moving about almost like a nervous fly as he waited for his brother to get ready. Like the alarm clock that was thrown through his head a few moments earlier, Eiry passed through both furniture and Rivener, hardly noticing what he was walking through as he did so.

"Like adders with cloven tongues that once hissed Caliban into madness, he mounts his screams at my ears, brother! Desperate as if to...As if to...My mind knows not what, so riddled with curtains of fog and...And...." The sigel struggled with his words, opening and closing his mouth until his thoughts were completed by Rivener. "Of course! The library, tomes will expel their tales and we can discover the truth of poor Fletcher's death! Brilliant, my brother, dastardly brilliant!" Upon Rivener's request to dress himself, Eiry buttoned his pajama shirt. At this moment, Eiry didn't care about his appearance, and he didn't think past the next step. He didn't think that he might get cold out in the chill of the night. He was already glancing eagerly out the window, his flaming wings spluttering in excitement.

As soon as it looked like Rivener was finished grabbing whatever he needed, Eiry bolted to the glass door leading onto the porch. With a snap of his wings, they flared open and he caught the brisk wind which lifted him high up into the air.

Rivener considered insisting that Eiry dress himself in something OTHER than his pajamas, as it was already autumn and the middle of the night like this was a rather COLD time of day... But then again Eiry was a ghost and most likely didn't care a bit about cold. With a sigh, figuring it was none of his business what his brother chose to dress like, Rivener floated out to the balcony and, like his brother, snapped his wings open to catch the wind.

The pair of Sigels were airborne, soaring up above the treeline. From up in the sky like this, it was easy to spot Durem at night; the light from the city cast an orange glow onto the sky itself, and it was towards this that Rivener led the way.

"We should look up history books, or maybe newspapers would have a better chance of finding stuff. Or on tv sometimes the property records are kept at the Library, that would have the list of previous owners of the house... There's lots of things we could look up. We should also find out how to perform an exorcism, just in case Fletcher won't leave just from learning of his past. Okay? We can split up and both look for some of the stuff... What would you be happier looking for?" Riv suspected Eiry wouldn't do quite well looking up newspaper articles, as they would be on microfilm and require the use of a machine... Or perhaps the Library was modernized enough that everything had been uploaded to a computer. Eiry would certainly not want to do THAT.

Eiry followed close to his brother, giving occasional flaps to his flame-like wings as they swung through the dark sky. Even though he was steered by weariness, Eiry knew to keep close to Rivener. He had never flown this high before. Mostly, he kept ground level and sometimes he clambered out onto the top of the Delaran household, but those times were few and far between. He tried very hard to keep his eyes focused on the orange glow of the city, but his gaze constantly drifted lower to the pitch below. Each time, he woke himself up further and inched a bit closer to Rivener, sometimes bumping into him during the flight.

"Newspapers," Eiry responded to Rivener's questions, grateful to have something distracting him, "The printed news must retain some sliver of poor Fletcher's demise and the books can whisper to us the methods of freeing him from the torment of the house."

Eiry thought for a moment further. He didn't realize that the only method not involving machinery would be looking through the books, but that hardly made a difference in his decision. He was a bookworm after all, and he preferred heavy tomes and paper over newspapers any day. Newspapers, in Eiry's opinion, was raw material for his mischievous exploits and projects. The thought of being the one to help Fletcher through exorcism pleased him more anyways. He felt like he held some level of responsibility for the ghostly child since he had such close bonds to him, being a ghost and all, as well as being the one to listen to him weep night after night.

"I will search out the learning for the exorcism," Eiry affirmed and as he spoke he bumped again into Rivener, "Pardon, brother mine, but...We speak and my mind drifts to wonder how much longer we must remain aloft?"

Rivener grumbled and pushed Eiry away slightly each time the other Sigel bumped into him. Was the minty one not used to flying or something? Why was he moving in such a zig-zag pattern? Not even once did Riv consider that not all Raevans were as used to flying as he was; indeed, Rivener often took this route to work when he was too cheap to pay for cab or bus fare.

Eiry's reply to his question distracted the Scorpion from snapping in annoyance at the ghost-Sigel. Red eyes met red eyes as Eiry volunteered for the book portion of the quest, which was all well and good in Riv's mind. "Hopefully I can find something out. You wouldn't happen to know Fletcher's last name, would you?" He wasn't sure it would be of any help, but perhaps he could cross-reference things if he had that boy's full name.

The younger Delaran Raevan's second question sent Rivener snickering. Eiry sounded like one of those little kids in the back of the car asking "are we there yet?" The elder brother smirked over at Eiry. "It's a while still, the city's over there, see? We can start to make out the buildings. We're like half-way there... another ten minutes of flight, maybe. Why?" Suddenly the Scorpion frowned. Maybe that was the reason for the erratic flight pattern? "...Are you too sleepy to fly, Eiry? We can float the rest of the way, although ah..." He glanced down: they'd cut cross-country, so the ground below was nothing but forest and swamp for a little ways yet. No road in sight.

"Look, just fly a little more until we get to that quarry over there, and we can land and go the rest of the way on foot, so to speak. Yeah?" Riv placed a hand on his brother's shoulder, offering to hold him up if the minty Sigel couldn't handle it much longer.

His wings gave a fiery splutter as they caught the next lift of wind and Eiry stretched them far to make most of the glide. As Rivener spoke, his words backed by the rustle of the wind and muddled by the snap of his hair as it flapped against pointed ears, Eiry did his best to listen. He nodded to his words, keeping his arms in front of him as if he were hang gliding instead of calmly laying them to his sides.

"Yes, his lineage has been told to me, but not by him, his relative. The other ghostly patron in our house, within whose blood once ran the blood of Fletcher, Yvette. She wept into mine ear and his name she moaned, 'Fletcher Wells' one day as I lingered in the light of the window," Eiry gave a helpful smile to his brother, glad to know that he had something to offer. He felt a small wellspring of pride erupt momentarily in his chest.

His eyes moved back to capture the light of the far away city. They seemed to be covering a lot of ground, but the more Eiry glanced between the dark country below them and the city in the distance, the more it seemed that Durem was staying put. Eiry didn't understand why Rivener wanted to work so far away in the city if he had to fly this terribly long distance each day. He didn't understand why Rivener wanted to spend time away from hanging out with his brother in the first place.

"Your younger brother," Eiry pointed out with a bony finger, "Is prone to heavy breathing and deteriorating flapping on such rare trips as long as this one, given the circumstance that this is the first airflight that I've ever undertaken on a path so lengthy, wearyeyed or not." He listened intently to some of his brother's suggestions, while he floated and bumped in again to Rivener's shoulder, wobbling slightly to regain his balance, "No, brother. Speed we must have, or sleep will drop my eyelids when we make for the ground. Fly straight, fly true."

So the little ghost-tyke's name was Wells. That would definitely be useful, as news stories most often feature only the last name in titles... Rivener committed that name to memory and promptly turned all his attention to teh minty Sigel.

Instantly, guilt hit. Rivener was forced to realize that this was Eiry's first long flight, and he bit his lip, eyebrows furrowing up. To go such a long distance in one go! Of course Eiry would be tired! The Scorpion gave a soft sigh and didn't shove Eiry aside when he bumped into him this time. Poor kid. And not only that, the ghostly Raevan was asking that they fly the whole way!

"Alright, we'll fly. Not much longer, Eiry, hang in there. If you think you're going to be too sleepy to keep going, let me know okay? I'll carry you or something."
Riv wondered if that was even something he COULD do, but he would do his best to try, dammit. "Sooo, Yvette was Fletcher's mom? Was Percy related too? Were they all a family?"

That might be helpful, as a headline might read "family of three killed in Durem Caves North".

As the pair softly discussed the relationships between all the ghosts in the house, Durem approached. Soon enough the pair were flying over the first buildings at the edge of the city, but Rivener pushed them onwards until they could spot the Library. He'd never BEEN there, but had passed it often on the bus. "Here, that's the Library. Let's land," Riv whispered, angling downwards and touching ground in an alley across from the building. He then turned to the Sigel. "You alright? There's trees along the walkway to the building, you could have a snack if you need to."
PostPosted: Sat Oct 24, 2009 10:16 am

As they descended to the alley in front of the library, Eiry descended slowly, giving pumps to his wings to slow the landing process. When he finally touched down, he gave a distinct wobble forward and reached back over his shoulders to squeeze his aching muscles. What a flight! Eiry thought. No wonder his brother was so strong, flying each day to and fro from home to work! He glanced to Rivener admiringly, his shoulders and back must be as strong as the oldest trees!

Breathing hard to catch his breath, Eiry tore his gaze from his brother, searching out any of the dead trees that Rivener mentioned, "A dine would replenish some of this sigel's sapped energy," he said, "I'm brimming with hunger."

Eiry made his way out of the alley, hardly waiting for Rivener's okay. He spotted the old building that was the library, but his red gaze focused on the winter-touched trees that lined the sidewalk in front of it. His stomach did a cartwheel of joy at the sight of the dead trees and Eiry silently thanked the oncoming of winter, because that meant that there was finally going to be plentiful food for him to feast on. Like a shadow, Eiry slunk across the empty city street and to the trees, like a bee to honey.

"Oh, fine sapling," Eiry crooned as he approached the tree, "I'll give you something if, willing, you let me take from you." All formalities aside, the tree didn't really have any choice in the matter. Eiry just liked to recite. He gave a soft inhale and the young tree before him bloomed with teeming life as Eiry sucked the sweet sappy death from it's cells. The rune beneath him grew with a soft ghostly glow as Eiry fed, and he sighed happily.

When he was done, he turned to Rivener with a mischievous spark in his eye and nodded to the library, "Let's go."

As they closed the distance between the library back door, Eiry spoke again, his voice more lively than before, "Percy died before Yvette, he told me so, he did. He speaks very often and leaves writings on the porch, details of his death and poemssweet for his young beloved, Yvette. Yvette was Fletcher's sister whose soft soul fled this earth when her grandmother sent her to her death from the second story window. Her parents and Fletcher's, the same, grieved and gave birth years later to Fletcher, to replace their dead daughter. That's all I know of Fletcher's tale, told from the lips of Yvette and Percy. I tried to undertake investigations of mine own, but little information there was in the house to find."

Rivener simply followed, slowly, when his brother hurried forward to feed. The sing-song Shakespearean prose that dropped from Eiry's lips made Riv grin to himself. It was endearing to hear the kid talk like that, so unique and old-fashioned. It fit the ghostly Sigel to a T. If only Eiry had inherited some of that old-fashioned gentlemanly manner as well, instead of that annoying mischief streak.

Mischief which sparked in the minty one's ruby gaze when he finished feeding. "Looks like you're feeling better," Riv noted idly as they made their way to the back door.

Eiry was quite knowledgeable about the ghosts in the house. Riv had never heard these stories, so learning of how the spirits were interconnected was rather fun. Fletcher seemed to be the biggest mystery, however... Would they have their work cut out for them? "You've already been a great help, Eiry. You certainly knew more than I did! It'll help me find stuff- guh, the door's locked." Rivener's hand had rattled at the back door's handle, finding no give. The Scorpion looked at his ghostly companion and smirked. "How about you go inside and unlock the door for me, hm?"

This was FUN, and Rivener's money-conscious and somewhat greedy side suddenly wondered how risky it would be for them to also do this little trick for people's homes and businesses, taking all their cash... It would be much easier work than the tattoo parlor (as much as Riv enjoyed his job, it didn't pay much at all just yet). He'd have to remember to talk to Eiry about it later. For now though, he had to concentrate on their current quest.
PostPosted: Sat Oct 24, 2009 10:57 pm

"As right as rain," Eiry grinned at his brother, already thinking one step ahead. He hardly even thought of doors anymore. They were merely backdrop, a decorative fog. With a cheeky flourish, Eiry saluted his brother and fell back into the locked back door. Moments later, there was a click and the door opened, followed by Eiry who bowed before his brother's entrance.

"My lord," Eiry crooned. The sigel looked up through his bangs, a large grin stretched on his cheeks. Oh, he did love being mischievous, that he did. He would do anything for the sake of trickery! As much and as often as he could, he would. The entire Delaran family was quite aware of that.

"When long hours you spend away from the house, I speak with the ghosts, searching companionship. Sometimes they spill their stories and others they have no voice to speak their words. Percy is hard to catch for he's only waking when the sun rides low in the east, and Yvette only speaks when Percy is awake, but her lips are sealed in a pout when she sees Percy on the porch pining for her." In conclusion, Eiry spent a lot of time around the ghosts of the Delaran home.

The library within was well kept, but it was old. The floor was a dark wood but it showed signs of wear and age and as well as the wooden beams. It was a nice architecture though, and the back room they entered was lined with metal book carts and cleaning equipment like brooms, dusters, and mops. At the end of it was another door, which Eiry passed through and opened from the other side.

"No lock in this one," he commented as it swung open easily on the hinges.

It boded extremely well that Eiry didn't seem to have an issue at all about going into this locked place uninvited. Rivener grinned. He'd DEFINITELY be talking to his brother later about his little plan.

The door clicked open and for a split second Rivener wondered if there might be an alarm system here. Maybe a box they'd have to key a code into after a door is unlocked, or it calls the cops... As Eiry opened the door and bowed to him, causing Riv to snicker in amusement, the Scorpion's eyes drew a quick line all around the doorframe, looking for an electrical point of contact. There would HAVE to be one, right? If an electronic key-code thing was attached, it would have to know when the door was open...

No such contact was found, and Rivener soon found out why; this Library was ANCIENT. At least this back room was. Probably they had to put all their spare money into keeping this place from crumbling.

Eiry was relating his knowledge of the spirit activity in their house, beginning by pointing out Rivener's common absences. The elder Sigel felt rather guilty: he had no idea Eiry felt lonely when he left! All the more reason for us to start a little "work" together, Riv told himself. "Poor ghosts. It must really suck to be a spirit."

Eiry opened the next door, proclaiming it lockless. Riv nodded as he passed through, glancing around. "Yeah, I doubt they'd lock many doors inside. Perhaps if they have a section for really old, expensive books... THAT door might be locked. But hey, we're here! The Library!"

Indeed, the pair of Raevans had come out of the store room to emerge behind the lending counter. The Library spread out before them, rows and rows of books on shelves and walls, climbing up three storeys. The central area was open all the way up to the third floor, peppered with desks and a few computers near the back window. Over to the left of the front doors, Rivener spotted the old newspaper-viewing equipment.

"Ok, I'm going to be over there, either on a computer or on those old machines. You go look up books! There must be a way to find out which section holds the occult stuff, OH, probably in these drawers!" Riv pointed to a long series of little drawers that lined the walls besides the lending desk. "See, this dresser says "By Topic". So you could supposedly be able to look up religious stuff or occult stuff or new age stuff or whatever the hell it would be under. Alright? Call me if there's anything!"

With a pat to his brother's back, Rivener headed over to the computers first. Maybe he'd be lucky and stumble onto the information there!
PostPosted: Sun Oct 25, 2009 11:27 am

Eiry snickered as Rivener hesitated to walk within the opened door. Of course, Eiry had no idea that Rivener was being cautious, looking out for alarm or security equipment. He thought that he was just afraid...Which made Eiry giggle with glee.

With a quick half-hearted swat at his hair, the raevan let his gaze trek over the inside of the library and he was instantly and palpably hit with awe. Books. They were everywhere! Shelves and shelves and racks and desks and cases of books! Eiry couldn't help but clasp his hands together underneath his chin and sigh like Juliet at the sight of the library's finest treasures. He was almost distracted as thoughts of purging the library of the entire poetry section and all its tomes labeled with the name "Shakespeare" flew through his mind, but thankfully the still ringing cry of Fletcher haunted him. Eiry forced himself to focus at the task at hand.

He would have to come later for those books.

At Rivener's comment about ghosts, Eiry turned to him and looked him straight in the eye, talking on a mask of gravity. He said, in a rare display of contemporary slang, "You have no idea." But then he twirled away, sticking his head and shoulders into the drawers that Rivener pointed to before anything else could be said. He pulled out a couple sheets of paper with numbers and details of which sections to find particular books in and he nodded at his brother.

"I'll search out the books. You...you have fun with the...the...t-the machines," Eiry gave a gulp and a deep breath. He might've grown into a sigel and his maturity was bound to develop soon, but Eiry still had a petrifying abhorrence to machinery that had more complications than a flashlight. He was fine with the flashlights. And toasters. But that anything that was above that level was no go.

With the pat on his back a prompt to start moving, Eiry quickly scanned the papers in his hands, looking for the word "exorcism". Luckily, in light of his constant reading, Eiry was quite adapt at picking out words he wanted to find.

"Section P...D2569..." the ghostly sigel murmured to himself and he rubbed his eyes. They were tired and hot, but adrenaline kept them from closing. "Third floor..." With the slow pump of his wings, Eiry lifted up and drifted soundlessly up the open space to the third floor where he began his search.

Rivener grinned at Eiry's stutter. The ghostly Raevan was at least TRYING lately, but he still couldn't quite shake his fears. Maybe someday, Eiry would be alright with machines. Then he and Riv would be able to watch movies together! Or play computer or video games together! They'd have a lot more in common, at any rate.

Shrugging himself out of that train of thought, Rivener sat at a computer and turned it on. He spotted Eiry floating up to the third floor... The other Sigel must have gotten a good lead or something! Riv hoped his own search would be as fruitful.

The computer was mostly used the same way those little drawers were; the main application was a codex, asking the user what topic/author/title they wanted and then seeking it out in the Library. Or, as Rivener looked closer, Libraries! If this was cross-referencing other Libraries, then it needed an internet connection, right? Riv grinned. He just had to get out of this stupid program and somehow find the internet.

There was no "quit" option, but a good old ctrl+alt+delete was more than enough to close down that annoying program. The desktop was still set up factory-bought, thank goodness, complete with a browser Rivener quickly brought up. Once in the web, Riv began typing.

He tried "Historical Durem Caves North homes", "Murder in Durem Caves North", and eventually put in their home address itself to see what might pop up. He was looking for information on Fletcher, but what he found instead was a bunch of websites about someone called "The Durem Death-Dealer". Curious, Rivener went to a few of these sites. It had been a murderer who killed a good number of people around Durem and Durem Caves North, a man who was never found and eventually just stopped killing. Riv felt a cold shiver, having a sneaking suspicion that he might know who this Durem Death Dealer was...

Just as Riv was about to close the website, he came across the reference to their home. It seems one of the serial killer's victims had lived in that house... Could it have been Fletcher? Now reading raptly, Rivener slowly scrolled through all the information.
