The sun was out, though the air carried the chill of fall. Nevertheless, Cailean was on the beach staring intently at a ragged piece of paper. It was supposed to be a map. A map to a buried treasure. The unfortunate truth of the matter was that Cailean had buried the treasure herself and then made the map. That had been last week. Now, she couldn't remember where she had buried it and she couldn't even read her own map. Note to self: Learn how to write.
A little ways off a small band of pirates were sitting around a driftwood fire, roasting meat and toasting bread and singing in suprisingly fine harmony. They only occasionally glanced up and out to make sure their youngest crew member wasn't getting into too much trouble.

Devin was snugly bundled in a turquiose knitted jacket that clashed with his skin tone, sunshine yellow wellington boots, and pumpkin orange gloves. It was clear neither of his parents had helped him get dressed; both of them had a strong sense for style. Maybe this was the start of his new found independence.
He wasn't color coordinated, but at least he'd gotten the boots on the right feet this time. He'd finally convinced his father to take him to the beach. He'd been pestering him about it for a week; to see the big blue. Which...Now, that he was looking at it, didn't seem that blue. Though people were right in saying that it was big.
The little blue-skinned toddler had caught sight of Cailean. He bounded over to her, having trouble running in the loose sand. "Hi!" He waved as he made his way to her. "Whatcha doing?" He'd made it to her side, and gave a cute tilt of his head as he looked over the piece of paper she was looking at. It wasn't in Elvish, or in any language he knew, so... "What'th that?" In his eagerness to know what she was doing, he didn't introduce himself.
Zee wasn't exactly happy to be at the beach; but unlike his son, he was wonderfully dressed, and well disguised. He looked much more like a teenager than the prince he might have been. If only he hadn't been navy, he would have been able to pull it off. He sat against a large piece of drift wood; it wouldn't be long before Devin wanted to go home anyway.

Cailean's first thought about the boy who approached her was blue. She'd never seen anybody that color who hadn't been dead from drowning, and even then they were usually more of a bloaty white. The little kitsune frowned slightly, pulling her treasure map close to her chest when he tried to read it and gauged her options.
After a moment's suspicion, though, Cailean shrugged and offered up a small smile that transformed her face from muddy ruffian into radiance. "S'a treasure map." She informed him in a low voice, looking over their shoulders to make sure nobody was listening in. "I'm lookin' fer treasure." She added. And then in a gesture of goodwill, "wanna help?"

Devin had never gone on a treasure hunt before, but he'd heard of them from his older cousin. Pirates went on them, and sometimes when they found treasure, they would hide it again so no one found it. Did that make this girl a pirate? "Treathure? Thure, I help," he said with a nod and a smile. Now he was remembering his manners. "I Devi," said Devin. "What your name?"
Daddy had always told him not to talk to strangers, but if he knew her name, she wasn't stranger...Was she? "Where your treathure?" He asked, before frowning slightly. He'd realized too late that he'd just asked a bad question. If she knew where the treasure was, she wouldn't have been looking for it. "What'th your treathure like?" That was a better question. If he knew what it looked like, it'd be easier to find. Or so he thought; he still hadn't quite grasped the concept of not being able to see what was under the ground.

"Cailean the Terrible." Cai said, rather pleased with herself for coming up with the nickname. All pirates had nicknames and while she'd attempted 'Cailean the Most Murderous Scourge of the World' for awhile, in the end it had proven too much of a mouthful. "You can call me Cai, though." She added. Most people, or at least most of the crew, laughed when she insisted on being called Cailean the Terrible. Even Murderhole, whose real name was Elijah.
"An' the treasure is all golden and delicious!" Cailean shivered with pleasure at the thought of the wonderous things she had buried the other day. "'Cept I canna read the map." Her face transformed into a little pout. "I think it must have gotten wet." That was patently untrue. The map had never gotten wet. Cailean just had no artistic skills whatsoever.

"Okay, Cai," Devin said cheerfully. Cailean the Terrible sounded like a mean name, anyway; and he'd always been told to be polite. "Golden and deliciouth?" Devin repeated with a slight frown. Treasure could be eaten now? Or did she mean another kind of delicious? The only kind of golden delicious he knew of were golden apples. "What ith your treathure?" He asked, with a cute tilt of his head and a smile.
He paused, and craned his neck to take another look at the map. "I thure we find it," he told her. "We jutht look for..." he leaned in to whisper, as if he thought other people might be listening, "A big X. X markth the thpot!" At least, that was what Josh had told him. "X thouldn't be hard to find. We find and thare, right?" He was apparently oblivious to the fact that pirates normally didn't share.

Cailean, true to her greedy nature, didn't deign to tell him what the treasure was or confirm wether or not she would be sharing it. The truth was, judgement was still out on this kid. And it was true, pirates didn't share. Although the crew of the Tail O' Nine was marginally better about that than most. But only marginally.
The little girl let out a big sigh. "Aye, X markes the spot." She frowned, peering across the beach. "I canna remember where I put the X, though. An' I canna find it." This was said rather grumpily. She gestured vaguely to a rocky patch of sand. "I thought it was there..." Sadly, the patch she gestured to was well within range of the sea's changing tides and it would have been clear to anyone old enough to understand such things that her marker had most likely been washed away.

"Maybe the water made the X go away," Devin said with a slight frown. "It made my thand cathtle go away. Rain wathh it away, in thandbox." He'd worked so hard on that sand castle, too. Not that you would have been able to tell what it was by just looking at it. "Wanna look there, anyway?" He asked, with a slight tilt of his head. He liked the idea of taking home treasure, maybe he could give some to Mommy when he saw her next.
Devin slowly, and rather clumsily made his way to the patch she'd gestured to. He wasn't used to walking on sand. It sunk down beneath him, and made him feel like he was going to fall each time. "Where you think you put it?" He asked, looking towards his new friend.

Cai scrambled after Devin, her short little legs making it a bit of a struggle. Nevertheless, she persevered. "The water?" Thinking on this, Cai frowned. It made sense, which meant she had thought out the whole treasure-hiding thing poorly. That was not a good thing for a pirate to do. Then again, she thought to herself, it had been her first time. Nobody was ever perfect the first time around. There were probably millions of lost treasures on this very beach. The thought perked her up as she came to stand near Devin.
"Hmmm..." Silver tail flicked and her ears did a complicated dance of perking forward and then laying back against her skull and then swiveling around like little radars. Her nose twitched. "I think it was by those two stones." She pointed, then nodded. "Aye, that seems right." She gave Devin a little grin. "Feel like diggin'?"

Devin nodded towards his new friend. "Thure," he said, before he frowned slightly. Pirates, especially captains, were known for putting off the work on someone else. "Hey, you gotta dig too." It was only fair, right? He didn't even know if he'd be getting a share of this treasure, why should he do all the work?
Devin moved over to where she pointed, and carefully took off the gloves he'd been wearing. He put a hand to the sand and shivered. It was cold! The sand had absorbed water and in the fall weather, it made it seem even colder. "Are you thure you put it here?" he asked, with a slight plead in his voice. He hoped she hadn't. Though, there was a brightside. At least his hands wouldn't be going blue in the cold.

It was a good thing Cailean wasn't averse to getting dirty and wet. She went down on her hands and knees and started pawing at the sand. "Nay, not sure." She said cheerily. Did it matter wether she was sure or not? She wanted the treasure back. "We'll just have to dig an' see!" She added gleefully.

Devin kneeled down into the sand, rather unhappily. He for one, was not used to getting dirty. He might not have minded it so much if she was sure where she'd put the treasure, or if she'd promised to share... Still. He used one hand to scoop the sand, keeping one safely in his pocket. The sand felt grity and almost painful under his fingernails. He didn't like that at all. He kept scooping up sand, and putting it into a pile near the hole.
He was too young to understand that if you placed sand too close to a hole, it would fall back in and you'd have to dig it out again. But luckily, the sand was wet, and stood in the pile rather well.

Cailean burrowed helpfully into the sand, throwing two handfuls for each one of Devin's. Unfortunately, she was digging faster because she wasn't neatly piling her sand, and it was getting everywhere. Especially on the two children. Cai didn't seem to either notice or mind.
"Oy!" She finally shouted with a grin. "I think I got 'er!" And indeed, what looked like the edge of a plastic baggie was peering out from under the sand. Cailean let out a whoop of excitement.

Devin frowned as sand came down on him. He apparently did mind getting dirty. Though his frown was quickly replaced with a look of confusion when he saw what looked like a plastic bag in the sand. He stared. Wasn't treasure supposed to be in treasure chests? That was what Joshua had told him. But then Cailean was a very little pirate.
Did that mean she didn't have a chest? He wondered. He continued to dig, uncovering the bag with each handful. "What is it?"

The little fox pulled the rest of the baggie out and brushed off the sand, peering inside to make sure nothing was damaged. Then she turned to Devin with an ear-to-ear grin.
"Sandwiches!" She crowed proudly. Cailean, being a very food driven child, relished the thought of a sandwich. Especially one she had worked so hard to obtain. Nevermind that it had spent a day or two underground at the beach. She looked at Devin expectantly, clearly waiting for him to share her boundless glee.
