Detective Conan Movie 13 — The Raven Chaser — has been released. There are two editions: XviD (two parts @ 700mb each) and an H264 MKV at 1400mb. These releases differ in no way other than the codec used, so take your pick. The first thing some of you must be thinking: “Why no Blu-ray release?” That’s simply because the retail Blu-ray will not be released until next month. When it is, the team will acquire it and get another release out the door in full 1080p.
Still, despite the movie only coming out two weeks ago, it seems like much longer than that. It has actually felt like eternity since this movie was announced to the time we could get our hands on the DVD. But, of course—expectations are high for it. Not since Movie 5 (Countdown to Heaven) have we had the Black Org. involved in the core of the movie, so I’m sure this one will draw comparisons to that before anything (Movie 5 also happens to be my favorite movie).
Like Movie 12, The Raven Chaser has a running time of over 1 hour and 50 minutes--previous movies didn’t dare to approach actual film runtimes. Personally, I thought Full Score of Fear held the time very well, but again, how that manages to fair against this one is on the rest of you.
So, why all the comparisons? I’ve worked on the Conan movies for a very long time now. Before I started working on the episodes, there had been only a few vis-à-vis “group” releases for any of the movies. The original DCTP had released a stellar version of Movie 6 (of which I modelled much of my future work on, especially at Neg), Anime-Conan had begun work on Movie 1, KnKF was right on the verge of releasing Movie 8, and the rest were all a collection of HK-DVD and ages-old VHS fansub rips.
Within my first year of fansubbing, it was decided that my group at the time—Neg—would forge ahead with subtitling Movie 3. We tried very hard, and all of my jobs were repeated several times after raw changes and such. The next year, Movie 5. After smaller roles in Movies 7 and 9 at KnKF, it came down to Movie 4. After I moved onto Kaizou, Movie 10. After skipping over the atrocity that was Movie 11, returned for M12 while putting the best DCTP had to offer into it. Later, I would have a hand in producing all of the OVAs along with nearly/over 200 episodes? I’ve completely lost count…
…And I never really regretted any of it. The movies require more time than absolutely anything. In fact, the number of lines in Movie 13 amounted to practically six episodes of dialogue. Throw in added expectations for the overall production value of it, and it’s quite a trying experience. The reward always makes it better and then some, of course—there’s never the amount of support for the episodes or OVAs as there are for the movies. Non-fans that can’t be bothered to spend enough time keeping up with 500 episodes and 700 manga files come out of the woodwork for the movies, and of course we always want to showcase our best work when they do. We wouldn’t want them to think the Conan community has turned to rubbish, would we? (These occasions also lead to my longest release posts, so take the good with the bad, amirite?)
Long before it came out, I had already set Movie 13 as the marker. Few were kept in-the-know about it, but I had decided to give it everything I had. I did the editing, the timing, the typesetting, the styling, the encoding and other odd ends on the release because I knew it would be a special one—and my last.
I called in every resulting favor from the past five years that I’ve worked on this series. I had to be sure that Conan fans were getting the absolute best version of this movie that we could muster. Current allies and colleagues, ones that have since retired—many people came back to help give you this movie. Usually, we do not include staff credits in our releases, but so many others have contributed that I thought it unfair to not give them credit within our release and thus decided to include them. Jmaeshawn from Kienai; Kaytokid, Creative, and Autem from MCT; Teppei, who had retired from our group and Conan some time ago—they all pitched in and produced top-quality work that anyone would be proud to include in a release of their own. My deepest thanks goes out to all of you.
But, ‘he who has put a good finish to his undertaking’ and all of that is the goal. I did my absolute best on this release and left nothing to chance. We could have very easily pushed this out in a week, but DCTP has never been a speed group. We do the series the way we do so that you don’t have to complain about low-quality releases and how you’re waiting for a better one—we want to always aim for the top, no matter what that takes.
Sadly, and I do use that word sincerely, I will no longer be a part of that. As of this release, all future DCTP releases will be handled by other DCTP staffers. 549-550 were both produced by them with minimal involvement from me, so there’s absolutely no need for worry—these people are the best at what they do and I think there is no other team for the job.
I won’t be completely disappearing, at least not anytime soon. I’ll still post mumblings on the forums and help advise the new team when necessary, but that will be the extent of it. Keep supporting DCTP, and AZFS, and Kienai, and Atavus, and MCT—if these people are doing Conan for the right reasons, they are more than worthy of your support. Fansubbing is a very draining experience (especially in Conan’s case) and one of the very few things that makes it all worth it is to read that there were people who enjoyed all of the time you put into it.
With that, I’ll officially be hanging up my DCTP Leader hat and retiring for good. To those of you that have played an active part in the community—especially since the merger that brought on DCTP—over the years, you all have really been great. To those that have supported us in our various teams and forms for the past five years, I sincerely, sincerely thank you all. Even to those that set out to do direct harm to the group and Conan in general for reasons solely beneficial to themselves, I can only say you shouldn’t take dedicated groups of people for granted. You’ll learn something about life and others as you mature—hopefully, anyway!
Last thing to note is that an international version of Movie 13 is planned, but progress won’t commence just yet. Stay tuned to the forums for that; GinRei will let you know how it’s going. And yes, I will see through ConanTV, just because I love you all. For those that this title is new to, feel free to check out the old preview here.
I’ll be looking forward to reading what you thought about the release on the forums, and thanks to everyone for the support for so long!
