ORIGINAL CHARACTER PROGRESSION GUIDE To be able to allow inter-village plots and interaction to run more smoothly, the moderators of the collection of villages will expect participants to adhere to the below guidelines, which will help you construct the abilities for your character. If everyone keeps these guidelines in mind, we are able to ensure a level playing field between individual players, groups of players, and the villages themselves. We intend for this system to be as invisible as possible, because the more rules and regulations we put down, the less fun we're all going to have. We hope that this system will make things simultaneously fun AND fair for characters to use. The purpose of this thread is to help you understand what it is your character should be able to do, and so if you have any questions on the matter, contact Kakashi or Temari anytime. There are separate guidelines specific to your rank. Each rank higher will permit you to use stronger jutsu, and have a larger array of what you're able to accomplish. In the next section we'll tell you what those ranks are, and a few things you'll need to consider before you make your character.

NINJA RANKINGS
Academy Student
Genin
Chuunin
Jounin
Kage
Legendary It is required that all new players begin at the GENIN level. If you're playing a child character under (about) the age of ten, you'd probably like to consider being an Academy Student. While you are constructing moves for your character, keep in mind that techniques known from the Genin level are the most BASIC of your attacks. As you ascend in rank, we intend for you to continue taking those moves with you, but EVOLVING them to suit the new responsibility that comes with achieving a higher rank. THEME While not all ninja have a Kekkei Genkai, some ninja as seen in the Naruto-verse have common THEMES, such as: Shadows (Shikamaru) Insects (Shino) Dogs (Kiba) Puppets (Kankuro) This "theme" or "specialty" deviates from their main element, but adds essential aspects to their character, and contributes to the kind of jutsu they use. Quote: For an example, we’ll use Jagura. Jagura is a Genin, and a recent graduate of the ninja academy. He is a frail boy who was often left out of the popular cliques in the academy because of his small stature and odd personality. He likes to juggle, though, and attempts to show his skill at juggling to people, hoping it can bring as much joy to them as it does to him. This has only ever gotten him mocked, though he seems calm and oblivious to it. Jagura’s family is has always received mixed reception from the general population of Konoha. They have a myriad of secret techniques (Not Kekkai Genkai) involving their family element (Earth) and most have an odd fascination with the occult (Ghosts and similar paranormal things). Jagura, like many of his clansmen, has found that he is excellent at molding chakra, and below average in his physical skills. Though Jagura never so much chooses his theme (As it’s more of a way of life, not something a character decides one day) his player, K, decided a proper theme for him was Ghosts, since he felt that earth element could go well with the occult theme of Jagura’s family. And so, for his starting Genin jutsu (See below in the Genin section for details) K chose for Jagura Dark Dust: Dark Dust Level: Genin Type: Genjutsu The user creates a lazy spiral of dust that extends 20 feet in each direction around himself for a short time (5 turns). The user can see perfectly in the dust, however anyone else inside of the dust can only see as far as their arms can reach naturally. Though harmless, the dust sometimes comes together to form shapes in the distance, making it difficult to discern where anyone around them is. These shapes never take a concrete form, and are always vague and hazy.As we can see, this Genjutsu is easily something that fits into the “ghost” theme and at the same time embraces Jagura’s Earth element. We will permit a character to make as many jutsu on his or her own as he likes. ALL techniques made by a character must relate to his or her focus and element. So, if you want to learn something outside your focus and element, you'll have to find someone who can teach what it is you want to know. When creating a character, think over two other things than his or her Theme: ELEMENT, and STATS. Don’t worry, there is no number crunching (Except with how many jutsu you can learn, and we’ve done it all for you in the appropriate rank posts below).
ELEMENT
There are five elements for you to choose from, listed below.
EARTH
WIND
WATER
FIRE
LIGHTNING ACADEMY STUDENTS have not yet developed their element, and are limited to the neutral-type jutsu that are learned in the classroom at the Ninja Academy, listed in the post below. When you start as a GENIN and continuing on to CHUUNIN, you're only allowed to attribute to your Primary Element, so choose which one fits your character best. ALL THE TECHNIQUES YOU CREATE MUST REVOLVE AROUND THIS ELEMENT. (This does not apply to techniques TAUGHT to you by another character IC-ly in a village.) Upon reaching the JOUNIN level, he or she may pick a Secondary Element, and make new Jutsu with that elemental property.
STATISTICS
Stats are simply your estimation of your character's Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu proficiency. When you ascend rank, you will be given points to divide to your choosing to each of those three areas, and any area cannot exceed seven points. All ninja must have AT LEAST one point in each area to be a Genin. On your profile, it will appear as follows: Stats: Ninjutsu: _/7 Genjutsu: _/7 Taijutsu: _/7 And you fill out, for your Genin, 5 points worth between Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu until it looks like this: Ninjutsu: 2/7 Genjutsu: 1/7 Taijutsu: 2/7 These will serve as a reminder to you of what skills your character is good at, and which area they're least proficient at. Just as critical as your character’s strengths are, his or her weaknesses will also affect him over the course of his or her life. Being perfect at everything is boring, and makes for uninteresting characters.
JUTSU
To prevent people from going crazy with the amount of jutsu they create or learn, we have to put certain caps on the number of jutsu you can have in your arsenal. This keeps all members of the same rank on an even playing field, and promotes storyline between teachers and students. Each rank of ninja will have a certain amount of fillable slots to assign certain jutsu to. Think of this as memory. You don't start with knowledge, but you do start with the memory to store that knowledge. The jutsu slots are just that- space to fill with jutsu when you create or learn them. Quote: NOTE: Jutsu that all ninja learned in the Academy DO NOT count as a jutsu that takes up a slot. These jutsus include: Kawarimi no Jutsu (Substitution Jutsu) Bunshin no Jutsu (Clone Jutsu) [NOT Shadow Clones] Henge no Jutsu (Transformation Jutsu) The amount of Jutsu you're able to create and learn at each level will be mentioned in the appropriate rank post below.
KEKKEI GENKAI
Kekkai Genkai (Bloodline Trait) represent a concentration of power in an individual. Because of this, those who have a Kekkai Genkai would be vastly superior to those who do not. Steps must be taken to assure that those with Kekkai Genkai do not simply outclass those who do not just because of their power. Due to a Bloodline trait being naturally stronger than most regular techniques, ninja with a Kekkei Genkai will have a slightly smaller amount of slots for jutsu, to compensate for the immense amount of time the user would've had to spend learning their clan's Kekkei Genkai. The amount of slots you may have if your character has a Bloodline Trait will be noted in the appropriate rank posts below. The next section will cover the progression a character will go through on his path to becoming the best ninja he can be. For most, this path ends at Chuunin, and for a select few, Jounin. Each rank has different levels of power and the ability to use specific skills. All people of each rank must conform to this system for fair play.

ACADEMY STUDENTS Academy Students are generally young children anywhere from the ages of 5-13. They are taught ninja skills and basic subjects early on, and earn a ninja headband that symbolizes their contribution to their village as a Genin when they graduate. In the Academy, students are taught proper use of their equipment, and control of three basic techniques: Kawarimi no Jutsu (Substitution) Bunshin no Jutsu (Clone) Henge no Jutsu (Transformation) Quote: All Ninja who have graduated from the Academy of any village are able to have these three techniques in their arsenal WITHOUT it taking up a spot in their available jutsu slots. Kawarimi No Jutsu
Level: Special
Type: Ninjustu
Where a ninja appears to be, they are not. When attacked, the ruse is revealed and the image of the ninja turns into its true form, that of a block of wood, with the real ninja somewhere within 30 feet. The user cannot attack after using Kawarimi No Jutsu until their next turn.Bunshin No Jutsu
Level: Special
Type: Genjutsu
The ninja performs this technique to create an illusory copy of themselves to suit as a distraction. It requires concentration and a constant feed of chakra to keep the illusion going.Henge No Jutsu
Level: Special
Type: Ninjutsu
Ninja can use this technique to transform themselves into the appearance of another person or object. The user must remain in concentration, or their true appearance will be revealed. Special Rules for Academy Students:Students will graduate from the Academy when they can perform all three of those techniques, and display all twelve HAND SIGNS correctly in front of a teacher or tutor.
Since students are young, inexperienced, and have not yet perfected any of their jutsu or combat skills, Academy Students are FORBIDDEN from fighting any characters or each other until they graduate. Statistics: Academy students are issued THREE POINTS* for their statistics, but placing one of their points in each score is MANDATORY. (Ninjutsu, Taijutsu and Genjutsu) All Academy Students will have stats that look like this: Ninjutsu: 1/7 Genjutsu: 1/7 Taijutsu: 1/7 Since the Academy's purpose is teaching all-around techniques, Academy Students usually have a rounded and equal level of skill in each of the three areas. *NOTE: If you choose to start as an Academy Student, you will only receive TWO additional points for your statistics when you graduate to Genin. Number of Learnable Jutsu: (Academy Students should only know the three basic Jutsu listed above: Kawarimi, Bunshin, and Henge. Therefore, they can't learn any other techinques until their graduation.)Genin Jutsu: 0Chuunin Jutsu: 0Jounin Jutsu: 0Kage Jutsu: 0

GENIN Physical Attributes:The guiding principle of a Genin is that they should be not much more physically able than a regular human. Each will have his or her respective strengths and weaknesses, but a Genin is fairly weak in the global scale. An average Genin should have the approximate strength and stamina of a well-trained teenager. Because the ability to jump very high is one that is augmented by chakra, it doesn’t factor in to this estimation of how physically strong a Genin is. Thus, without chakra, a Genin cannot jump much higher than a regular teenager. Chakra Attributes:Depending on how experienced a Genin is, he or she can range from incapable of even doing something so basic as augmenting a leap with chakra to being skillful enough able to walk on water, or run up walls using chakra. The better with chakra a Genin is, the easier he or she will be able to do things that have to do with controlling chakra. Jumping is so easy because all it is doing is releasing a burst of chakra from the bottom of the feet, and needs little control. It is well known as being the easiest thing to do with chakra. Similarly, Genin who are bad with chakra will likely know more techniques that have to do with releasing chakra in violent forms rather than honing chakra into technical ones. To give you all better ideas of what Genin techniques will look like, there are two examples below: Quote: An example of a jutsu used by a character who ISN’T quite good with chakra is the Rock Gun. Rock Gun
Level: Genin
Type: Ninjtusu
Holding an object the size of a baseball in hand, the user can release a spike of Chakra from his palm that sends the object flying at high speeds. Even though the user can only force chakra out of his or her body in a crude way, this jutsu shows that they can still do things with that power. It may be just as easy to throw a kunai, but ninja are skilled in finding extra uses for their talents. Some variations of the same technique could be: If, instead of a single baseball sized object, the user holds ten marble sized objects. The single shot becomes a spread shot without ever changing the fundamentals of the attack. Or, how about firing something from your hand when you’re bound? If you can’t pull back your arm because you’re tied up with rope, just use the Rock Gun. Or, in combat, hold a rock in your hand and, instead of using just punches, just fire rocks and baseballs into people’s stomachs. It hurts. Quote: An example of a jutsu used by a character who IS good with chakra is the Fire Hand. Fire Hand
Level: Genin
Type: Ninjutsu
The user’s hands cover in flames. These flames are harmless to the user, but are otherwise regular flames. The Fire Hand is the perfect jutsu for a chakra-proficient Genin. The technique is used by constantly releasing a slow trickle of chakra from the hands to feed the fire. While using it for hours may prove draining, for short to medium length fights it’s an effective way to augment Taijutsu combat. The flames have no magical properties, they just burn anything they touch. This technique is especially good for a grappler who holds on and lets the fire really burn someone, but even quick punches with the fire hand will do some extra damage. The best quality about either of these techniques is their ability to GROW and EVOLVE with the user. As the Genin turns into a Chuunin, he can evolve his techniques into more formidable attacking jutsu which have more diverse uses. This is not some magical transformation, and usually a Chuunin will seek aid from a more experienced Chuunin or a Jounin to help them come up with ideas and learn the chakra control to UPGRADE the jutsu they originally created. Quote: A chuunin could use the Rock Gun’s evolution, the Rock Cannon, to place his hand on the ground and send a spray of earth flying away from him at the enemy. This can cause things like heavy dust, large rock projectiles, as well as destroy/shape the terrain to the chuunin’s advantage.
A chuunin could use the flame hand as a step towards an ability that allows him to throw flames from his hands, or ones that let him create smoke for cover, create magma from rock by thrusting his hands into the ground, create flaming katar…etc. In the bottom of the post of each ninja rank, it states how many jutsu a character can learn. If a character chooses to upgrade his jutsu, it takes the place of one of his “create” slots. That is to say that, instead of creating a brand new jutsu, one of his creatable jutsu for Chuunin level becomes the advanced version of his original Genin jutsu creation. The original Genin jutsu remains, and he can use the lesser version as well as the advanced one. Remember that no technique at genin level should be stronger than these given techniques. Weak abilities that have many uses are good to start with because they train players to use their minds to win battles rather than just spamming strong jutsu. Special Rules for Genin:All Genin can use Kawarimi no Jutsu ONLY ONCE PER BATTLE. This does not count on their list of jutsu, as all ninja can use it, regardless of rank or ability.
Genin CANNOT make Shadow Clones. All clones must be either elemental, or illusion (Bunshin no Jutsu). Genin can make NO MORE THAN TWO CLONES AT A TIME without special permission from a mod. While elemental clones DO take a slot to learn, illusion clones DO NOT, as they are one of the special jutsu all character start with from the academy.
Genin can create or learn up to THREE Genin level jutsu other than the one they start with. A Genin can also learn one Chuunin level jutsu from a teacher. Unlike the one jutsu the Genin starts with, these must be developed in-game. This is all represented on the chart below: Statistics: Genin are issued FIVE POINTS for their statistics, but must have AT LEAST a single point in each score. (Ninjutsu, Taijutsu and Genjutsu) Number of Learnable Jutsu: Genin Jutsu: 4 (One that you start with, and three slots after that) Chuunin Jutsu: 1Jounin Jutsu: 0Kage Jutsu: 0If your character has a Kekkei Genkai...Since characters with Kekkei Genkai will have a slightly less jutsu slots to compensate for their advanced attack strength, Genin with Bloodline Traits will adhere to the following limitations for learnable jutsu:Genin Jutsu: 3Chuunin Jutsu: 1Jounin Jutsu: 0Kage Jutsu: 0

CHUUNIN Physical Attributes:A Chuunin should be slightly stronger than a well-trained adult. An average Chuunin should outclass most of the top physical Genin in raw physical ability. As always, variations exist, and very physically weak people can potentially be Chuunin, though it is rare. Chakra Attributes:Chuunin are expected to at least be able to manipulate chakra to form mid-level techniques. The standard Chuunin can perform techniques like the Chakra Razor and maintain it for around a minute under duress. Quote: Chakra Razor
Level: Chuunin
Type: Ninjutsu
The edge of the user’s hand glows from concentrated chakra. The chakra around the hand becomes sharp, like the blade of a sword. The hand cannot bend its fingers, or the jutsu is broken. The Chakra Razor is a jutsu that shows concentration of chakra into a useful form. This demonstrates the level of ability with chakra that all Chuunin should possess. Special Rules for Chuunin:Chuunin can use Kawarimi No Jutsu ONLY TWICE PER BATTLE. This does not count on their list of jutsu, as all ninja can use it, regardless of rank or ability.
Chuunin may create up to FOUR illusion clones at once. (Genjutsu) Since it is an Academy Technique, it DOES NOT take up one of your available jutsu slots.
Chuunin can learn to use Shadow Clones if they find the proper teacher. A Chuunin can only summon one shadow clone at a time. A Chuunin can summon up to four elemental clones at once. Elemental and Shadow Clones (Ninjutsu) DO take up a space in your available jutsu slots.
Chuunin can create up to THREE GENIN LEVEL JUTSU and teach them.. Chuunin can create up to TWO CHUUNIN LEVEL JUTSU, and may learn ONE JOUNIN LEVEL JUTSU from a teacher. Statistics: Chuunin add FOUR POINTS to their previous statistics, but must have AT LEAST 2 points in each score. (Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and Genjutsu) Number of Learnable Jutsu:Genin Jutsu: 7Chuunin Jutsu: 3Jounin Jutsu: 1Kage Jutsu: 0 If your character has a Kekkei Genkai...Since characters with Kekkei Genkai will have a slightly less jutsu slots to compensate for their advanced attack strength, Chuunin with Bloodline Traits will adhere to the following limitations for learnable jutsu:Genin Jutsu: 5Chuunin Jutsu: 2Jounin Jutsu: 1Kage Jutsu: 0

JOUNIN Physical Attributes:Jounin are the elite of the ninja world, and physically reflect this. Jounin are on average more athletic than Olympian level athletes, able to naturally perform feats of strength and speed that some Chuunin still require Chakra to do. Though this is not the case widely, some Jounin choose to concentrate on other skills than physical. Count on such Jounin to be devastatingly strong in other areas to make up for whatever they lack physically. Regardless, no Jounin is a “bad” fighter. Chakra Attributes:An average Jounin’s level of Chakra control is usually very good (even for the worst). Not just anyone can become a Jounin, and those who do must be able to adequately conduct attacks and defenses in all areas of jutsu. An example of a Jounin level technique is the Explosive Mark. Quote: Explosive Mark
Type: Ninjutsu
Level: Jounin
The user forms a thick concentration of chakra into the knuckles of his/her fist or the palm of his/her hand and maintains the explosive power. When the user’s knuckles or palm touch his desired target, the Explosive Mark is transferred from the user to the target. This can be delivered by any touch, be it a gentle tap or a heavy punch. Once transferred, the Jounin must will the mark to stay contained, or it explodes outwards in all directions with massive force. This jutsu shows Jounin chakra skill because it contains multiple layers of chakra control: First, summoning large amounts of Chakra and suppressing it into a specific area. Second, transferring that power onto a target. Lastly, continuing to suppress one’s own chakra even after it has left the body, a skill only usable by capable Jounin. Special Rules for Jounin:Jounin can use Kawarimi No Jutsu THREE TIMES PER BATTLE. This does not count on their list of jutsu, as all ninja can use it, regardless of rank or ability.
Jounin may create up to SIX illusion clones at once. (Genjutsu) Since it is an Academy Technique, it DOES NOT take up one of your available jutsu slots.
Jounin can learn to use Shadow Clones if they find the proper teacher. A Jounin performing utilizing Shadow Clones can only summon TWO at a time. A Jounin can summon up to six elemental clones at once. Elemental and Shadow Clones (Ninjutsu) DO take up a space in your available jutsu slots.
Jounin can create up to SIX GENIN LEVEL JUTSU for themselves and can teach them. Jounin can create up to FOUR CHUUNIN LEVEL JUTSU and can teach them, and may create TWO JOUNIN LEVEL JUTSU as well. If a Jounin can find such a teacher, he can learn ONE KAGE LEVEL JUTSU along with the rest. Statistics: Jounin add FOUR POINTS to their previous statistics, but must have AT LEAST 3 points in each score. (Ninjutsu, Taijutsu, and Genjutsu) Number of Learnable Jutsu:Genin Jutsu: 13Chuunin Jutsu: 7Jounin Jutsu: 3Kage Jutsu: 1 If your character has a Kekkei Genkai...Since characters with Kekkei Genkai will have a slightly less jutsu slots to compensate for their advanced attack strength, Jounin with Bloodline Traits will adhere to the following limitations for learnable jutsu:Genin Jutsu: 10Chuunin Jutsu: 5Jounin Jutsu: 2Kage Jutsu: 1
