Day was ending and the night was well on its way. The sun could only just barely be seen over the horizon with its small dim flicker of light. The stars were getting stronger as the moon settled in its rightful place.

The little black widow Jackal had been hard at work catching a meal for her and her sister to share all day. This time her efforts had been fruitful and she now was dragging the hind quarters of a zebra back towards her den. Bura hadn't caught the zebra her self, but she had successfully managed to scavenge it away from a small pack of hyena's. That was something to be proud of. The two wouldn't go hungry with such a large chunk of meat to share.

Bura dragged the remains of the zebra with ease despite her thin narrow frame. She was a strong willed jackal though and didn't have time to worry about her build.

Though she was stopped when her dragging was snagged by a rock. The jackal dropped the leg out of her mouth to go inspect what had snagged her zebra.

User ImageLike an agent of the night, another black jackal stepped into the view of the horizon within moments of the sun’s descent. Ears raised and nose positioned straight in the air, as if he were searching for something. Time was able to lapse by quickly during the day, as he was most active at night, when he could be night's companion itself. The moments of distinguishing sun were always the moments he looked forward to, and the duration more or less stayed the same each day before he greeted night in the usual routine. The only thing bothersome was the actual wait--the long stretch of time that seemed to linger in the air as the sun slowly but surely dipped down, until it was completely out of sight.

It was beginning, and a sigh released as he began the wait. The land seemed empty, and his lonely figure quivered as the first few breezes of night swept by his body. He muttered something about the day taking too long to go away, and quickly ran through the tall grasses without fear of any natural danger. It didn't take too long for him to notice that soon, he wasn't alone anymore - but this company wasn't the company he expected. Eyes gleamed in curiosity, however, still unafraid despite the possibility the new presence could pose danger, and he walked towards the subtle sounds he heard.

"Who's there?" he spoke audibly into the air; the male jackal scented a light tinge of blood, but that didn't stop his query. He was confident that he was well protected at this time, anyways.

The females ears flicked hearing anothers voice. She had truthfully thought her self to be alone. It was only natural that she stood over her steal with fur razored straight up. A hungry look in her eye was clear, she was not about to let these stolen goods go.

Course Bura wasn't stupid either , if the owner of the voice was a lion or something just as big, the jackal would high tail it out of there.

But she could try and seem like she was serious right? The female thought so.

"Might I ask the same question?" There was no hint of a growl in her throat, but the words were sharp edged and warning enough. She could only hope that if it was a bigger predator they'd mistake her for something bigger and loose interest.

Little did the jackal know was the owner of the voice was another of her kind.

Through the thick grasses he went, and the black male jackal smelled... blood. He paused; was that a good or bad thing? Through his frozen stance, he heard the small voice of a response to his query. It was female, and not the sound of a bigger predator. However, the speech seemed rather threatening, or perhaps cautious?

"Uhm..." he began, paws beginning to take their steps once more towards the owner of the other voice, "I'm Inpu."

As he rounded a boulder, he couldn't help but notice a trail of blood, though it didn't seem to be the stranger's blood, as she didn't sound weakened or in distress. With a few more steps, he recognized the owner of the voice was a small, black canine... She was a jackal just like him - black, just like him, with a curious red mark on her back.

When he observed the defensive stance she was in, he stopped and offered a small smile. He didn't mean to disturb or frighten the female, or even look like a common thief to her prize.

"Ah, sorry there. I'm not going to try and do anything. You're safe," he stated sincerely.

Paw steps.. the creature was getting closer. She didn't really see the owner of the far away voice until he spoke. Another jackal and a black one at that. She only had memories of black jackals from her mothers pack way back when before it had been destroyed. For just one split second the female had to wonder if this jackal had any connection. Bura quickly hushed such hopeful thinking though. They were all dead now except her sister.

"Safe." She still sounded a little on the gruff side but her shoulders had relaxed and her fur had flattened. Still she kept her self in front of her goods. It wasn't anything personal, just a survival habit. Couldn't full trust anyone you just met after all.

"Its kinda rare to see another jackal now a days. Are you from a pack or traveling?" Small talk didn't seem like such a bad idea. After all she was in the clear from those she had stolen from. What was a few minutes of small talk. Honestly she was a little excited to see one of her kind be the owner of the voice and not something bigger. Bura was thankful she didn't have to run with her legs between her tail this time.

"I'm Bura."

Nodding more than happily at the female's repetition, Inpu wasn't this unguarded with no reason. While he still sensed the tension coming from the stranger, he guessed it was only normal for creatures of their size and status in the circle of life. Still, he chanced an attempt to get closer to her out of curiosity, especially now that he saw what she had been carrying in a hurry.

"Hmm, no pack," he answered, "But traveling... That is hard to say. If you mean whether I stay in the same place all the time, then no to that. Are you?"

Inpu was glad the other wasn't put off too much to be his company during his wait. It didn't hurt that her primarily black coat made her quite a looker, too. He was biased in his preference for black coats, as he and his companion sported them - it did help to conceal oneself at night, too.

"Bura is a cute name," he voiced, suddenly settling himself down on his haunches.

His eyes wandered over to the rising moon, getting up there as they slowly spoke, and he asked, "Are you scared of something? We really are safe, you know. I'm not just saying that."

The female lifted a brow as the male approached closer. She wasn't sure how to react to the boldness but at the same time, that black coat put her at ease. Call it a weakness, but it made her think of loved ones long ago. It made her think of her pack, home.

"No pack?" Her crimson eyes widened, "Yet you travel?" Jackals size seemed to put them at a disadvantage on the whole food chain of things. Bura struggled getting what she could with just her and her sister. The fact this male traveled with out a pack intrigued her.

Though, she supposed her and her sister were just two jackals. Not much but a ghost of a memory of what their pack had once been.

Wait, he thought Bura was a cute name? The females guard slipped a little allowing the male to get closer. Before she realized it he had slipped in real close.

"Afraid? Of you?" She snorted putting up a bit of tough airs on, "Im not afraid of you, just can't be to careful when ones traveling with a meal." She motioned her head toward her goods.

His nods became more fervent as Bura echoed his statements skeptically. While it was not in his nature to be as brave as he seemed to be, he understood that other jackals not in his position were by far circumstantially poorer.

But Inpu waited before explaining as he sat at what he thought was a comfortable distance to the female, though his distance had to be closer than what some thought due to his experiences. He admired her practicality and assertion in her declaration, and once more he offered a nod to her nearby prize.

"Yes, I suppose so. If something came now, though, I would find it hard for them to even take something of yours, much less get near us with ill intentions," he began, an ear flicking out lazily as he felt a yawn coming, "I'm always grateful for the luck I've been born with - it's not hard for me to find something to eat or prevent being eaten myself. I was born and raised to fill a role to a lioness goddess, you see. However, I get more protection at night than I do during the day, but there's less of a chance of being pursued and surprised during the day."

Inpu waved his tail across the ground contentedly and stretched, indicating his relaxation, "And as night is drawing near, and you're with me, you'll be alright. So don't worry so much."

The female lifted a brow at that. She'd come across a god before. Or so he had claimed. The jackal was still a bit of a skeptic about if the lion really had been a god or not. Though, he had been the first mammal other then a bat she'd seen with wings.

Still. She wasn't about to start an open debate with this jackal here. He seemed like a fine enough fellow.

"Safe huh," She almost snorted but controlled her self. "Your dead when you assume your safe. Can't be to careful ever," Her face grew serious. At one point in time she'd lived a carefree life with her sister in a huge jackal pack. Now the two were the only ones left in that blood line. Safe was just an easy way to get killed out here.

"Why are you safer at night then day?" The female took a seat and opened her ears to listen. Truly, Bura was curious.

Inpu knew too well the signs that indicated skepticism at his character. Out of all the jackals on the plains, one thing made him unique to everyone else. Or rather, his family, but he was the only one still living in the savanna - there had always been just one, he had been told. He wasn't mad that Bura didn't believe him, as he had developed a lot of patience for his duty, and so he would have a lot of patience in interacting with everyone as well.

He had to admit, she was very realistic, and he knew that. She did not know the life and history he did. He took her blunt and harsh remarks in stride and even nodded in agreement - that one couldn't be too careful.

"Of course, that is a good thought to follow!" he chipped in, his meek smile a stark contrast to Bura's serious expression.

But when offered, he was glad, despite her skepticism towards his position, that she was willing to listen.

"I'm safer at night because I serve Bast, the Goddess of Night," he simply stated, his smile growing wider to indicate his pride at his title.

"I'm from a long line of jackals that served under her, for she would have no other familiar. I am very honored and humbled by her. If you stay long enough, I can introduce you to her, if you'd like," he offered.
