When I saw greatest band of the 70's my first thought was Led Zeppelin. Which is a pretty good thought...been dazed and confused for so long it's not true...

If by best you mean 'well-known', I'll have to say the Beatles. Definetely. I'm not such a big fan of the Eagles. Thought of them as a good band with some really good songs. Beatles songs are unforgettable.

Yesh, Captain! *salutes*
Personally, I believe that it's Led Zeppelin. But we all know that a lot of people know The Beatles more. Ang I guess that's what makes them immortal. Unlike Led Zepp, no doubt they're immortal to us.. but 'we' are so few.. I think?
Anyway, both bands are great in all aspects of music. Composition, mixing and all that..

I have a difficult time naming people who steal songs from others (Dazed and Confused among them) as the best band, so Led Zeppelin is already out.
I'd have to draw the line somewhere between Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, The Allman Brothers Band, the Grateful Dead, and King Crimson.
The Beatles only released one album in the '70s, which was considered one of the low points of their later career, so I couldn't include them.

Abbey road was a fairly good album, methinks.

I would say either Deep Purple or Black Sabbath. They sort of started the Hard Rock movement.
