Back in the early days of firearms Chine much preferred catapult launched bombs over cannons. The reason for this is China's lack of farm animals compared to the West. Animal manuer is needed to make saltpetre, a main ingredient of black powder, the gunpowder used in that era. Less manuer meant less gunpowder (This is part of the reason why Europe was able to kick China's a** in the 19th century, coincidentially.). A good way to conserve gunpowder was to use said bombs in place of cannons. Although they still required gunpowder to explode, the requirement was less than with cannons.
For some reason, the Chinese gave the bombs some wierd a** names, such as Dropping from Heaven Bomb and Bandit Burning Vison Confusing Magic Fireball.
(The source for this information is The Greatest War Stories Never Told by Rick Beyer)
Now, is it just me, or is that just plain wierd? Who gives a lethal weapon a name that sounds like something out of a third rate fairy tale?
Okay, now that I've shared this innformation, does anybody else have some wierd a** weapon names to share?
