I had the same problem a while ago. I've started using other words instead of swearing, or just making a sound.
"fffffffff" is still pretty common for me. wink

Same here...
oh and is "damn it" swearing?? You could be meaning damn this desk that is so dirty, or damn this test, i failed, or damn that loud sound that is bothering my ears... would that still be considered swearing?? I say that word quite often and my mom gets all mad.. so I'm trying to get in the habit of saying "darn it"
(if it is swearing, i apologise for saying it so many times xd )

It's a shorter version of "God damn it." There's a reason she's getting mad.

But if you're buddhist, it shouldn't hurt right?? as long as you don't say it in public right?? by the way, I never swear out in public. and I'm not trying to give anyone a hard time either.. I really am asking this so I can be sure. If it's not fine, I'll just learn darn it lol

What I think the issue with this for Buddhists is that it isn't the words, it's the anger - the reason for saying them - that is the problem.
Generally, people swear when they feel they have a reason to: Something broke, something went wrong, something 'made them mad'. Once those conditions are met, they let loose with a 'damn it' or a 'aw hell' - or one of the bigger four letter deals. You say them when you're angry, other people interpret them as anger or a sign of a rough personality they don't want to be near...the cycle perpetuates. Ever see people get into an F-YOU shouting match? xd
The key here is dealing with the anger in a constructive way, rather than verbally or physically lashing out, and that's the hard part. 3nodding I still haven't found a really effective way to do this myself, so if anyone has suggestions.. ninja

Oh, and it only truly hurts those around you that care whether or not you swear. I personally don't care, but others do. And I agree with Byaggha; it's not so much the word as the anger behind it that matters.

@ Manguusu - Yeah it would offend other people around me. My mom is buddhist too, and I think she was just trying to limit my use of the word because if Im allowed to say that at home then I'm sure I'll slip and say it out in public.
@ Byaggha - I never thought of dealing with anger that way. @.@ I should consider that!! Normally, if I got really mad I just bottle it up then do something that would cheer me up considerably then I'd be happy all over again XD But yeah I need to change my habit of swearing. >.< So um, if you're one to bottle up then that might work for you..
