Anson McCormick watched the strange lad with blue hair plop a pansy down in the hole he'd just dug. The man didn't quite understand why Lee had one of the servants from her parents' house living here with her and Rory, but he guessed it was out of pity. Lauss was quite smart, he could tell that, but the boy lacked any sort of sense at all. At least he was eager to learn and, so, Anson had put him to work helping finish the flowerbeds and garden for his son's cottage. Later, he might even attempt teaching Lauss some basic duties at the stables.

"Mr. McCormick, am I doing this correctly? Is it perfectly straight?" Lauss kept tilting the flower at different angles, wanting the plant to be at a ninety degree angle from the flower bed. For reasons only known to Lauss, he figured it would get the best sunlight that way. "I still feel we should have used all the same color flowers. It would look more organized that way." He frowned as his eyes viewed all the multicolored pansies in front of the house, feeling the cottage looked messy now.

"It looks fine, lad," Anson chuckled. "Rory an' Lee will like th' different colors. It makes th' place look brighter. Besides, this is what th' boy bought, so this'll be what w're plantin'."

"Yessir..." Lauss planted another pansy, his focus on the work before him, taking the job much more seriously than he should have. It was anything but calming, like such a task would be for most, when he seemed to consider the angle at which the flower sprouted from the ground a life or death matter. The essentic sat back and looked over his worked, gently giving the flower another tilt before nodding with satisfaction. "Mister McCormick, do you think Rory would be displeased if I gave one of these flowers to Rhi?" He wasn't allowed to see her, true, but that didn't mean he couldn't still give her gifts. He figured she'd like one of the red ones, considering it was the closest thing to pink they had.

"Nae, I donnae think he'd mind at all, lad," Anson said, smiling. He finished planting the last of the pansies he'd been working with and sat back, wiping his brow with the back of his arm. "I think tha' about does it. W' should gae in an' see t' some lemonade. What d'you think, eh?"

Lauss nodded, grinning a bit. "Miss Lee will be proud of us, won't she?" He stood, agreeing to the lemonade. He thought a moment as he headed inside, fetching cups and the lemonade. He still didn't know what to make of this "wedding" thing, still not sure what even went into getting married. Perhaps Anson knew...

"I'm sure she will," Anson said, smiling. He had taken a liking to the simple lad during the week of checking in on him. Siting at the table, he watched the boy move around the kitchen. "How're you takin' t' Lee's upcomin' marriage?"

Lauss turned his head around as he poured their drinks, somehow not spilling a single drop or having the cups overflow. He had odd talents, it seemed. "I don't particularly mind it. I don't know much about marriage, aside from the legal commitments one makes with another. I suppose, for some, it is binding religiously, as well. But that is the extent of my understanding." Setting down the jug of lemonade, he brought both cups to the table and sat with the man, not having anything else to keep him busy at the moment.

"I take it you an' Lee got a special bond or you wouldnae be here now," Anson said, picking up his glass to take a sip. "You understand tha' she an' Rory are in love, reet? Tha' they'll eventually be haen children some day?"

Lauss nodded, a smile on his face at the thought. "I was under that impression, yes. I rather look forward to their children being born. I'll have someone to tutor, even after Lee is finished with school." That was the only way he'd be able to continue his purpose, it seemed. "But, sir... I know they're 'in love', but I know even less about that than marriage."

Anson smiled at the boy. "Lad, I been married nearly twenty years an' sired four children, an' e'en I still donnae really understand love. Not sure it's really somethin' t' understand. You just experience it." He took another sip of his drink. "Hae you thought about tutorin' some o' th' children? You seem like a bright enough lad an' you're patient. You should ask th' school if you can help wi' educatin' th' weans."

"I want to experience it, then. So I can know." How else would he understand what his master was going through if he didn't try this whole "love" thing out for himself? Lauss' face perked up as the mention of tutoring came up, his eyes lighting up with excitement. "Would they let me? That would be..." indescribably wonderful. Still, that might not fulfill his purpose in the same way. He was meant to tutor Lee, not random people. While he very much enjoyed studying with Rhian and his classmates, it didn't give him the same satisfaction, didn't help clear away that feeling of worthlessness he seemed to be getting lately. He figured Lee's children would at least help half as much as tutoring Lee would, considering they were half Lee. He could ignore the half Rory part.

"I'm sure they would if you asked. I can e'en gi' a recommendation if you want," Anson offered. "W' do value wor education here, contrary t' belief, an' you seem rather interested in teachin'."

"I am, sir, yes." The essentic nodded, frowning a moment at a thought. "Would anyone want my help, though? Everyone I try to tutor doesn't want me around afterward. Aside from Rhi, but she still doesn't like studying, either."
