There was a cool fog on the down that morning. It chilled Dogsbane's fur, even from inside the burrow, against his dad and brother and mom. He woke to it, shaking. "Brrr..." was all he managed before getting to his feet. He stepped over to his father and nudged him with his head. "Da...Da..." he muttered, pawing his dad's ear. "Da...I'm hungee...will you get flay for me?"

He was used to his dad getting a little whippit of grass or dandilion greens when he was feeding off his Marli. But he was becoming spoiled, having eaten three meals inside the saftey of his burrow now. "Da..." he repeated.

Hallowfell shifted slightly, his rest jarred by the sound of one of his sons. The tattered buck didn't stay with the marli of his sons on a daily basis, but he did drop by often to help her rear the two little buggers.

They had gotten off lightly. From what he heard, many of the does had up to six!

His mismatched eyes parted slowly and he set about grooming his chest, then his ears.

"Dogsbane... I think 'et be 'igh time you 'n I 'ave a wee bit o' adventure, what y'say? Instead o' me bringin' th' flay t' you, yer gonna be a big rabbit 'n go with me t' get it."

His hind leg thumped and he went up and down erect at his words. He wiggled his fluffy tail and bounded around the burrow once, nearly crushing his brother under his hind feet. "Yeah! I lub going ousside!" he exclaimed. He'd been out three times. Once with his Marli, on a tiny tour of the down outside the burrow...and twice on his own, when he'd slunk away while they slept and darted outside for the breifest of seconds. Now he'd be allowed to go with his pa! And flay- no, silflay all on his own! He was very excited. "Can we go now?!" he asked in his chipper little voice. He was so fond of his Da. So fond of his scars and tattered body...so fond of the tag in his ear.

He didn't have one, but he wanted one. He hadn't seen another rabbit with one. His Da was a special rabbit. He wanted to be special too. And he knew his dad was very brave and strong and not-afraid of anything. He wanted to prove to his dad he was the same by going for hi silflay.

"O' course, kit." The buck nodded and chuckled as he nosed the eager and energetic little bundle of personality.

"Y'come with me, but y'gotta stay near and do as I say, 'kay Dogsbane?" He shifted himself carefully, as to not wake Dogstooth or Foxglove. He was eager to fill his own gut and to take in the rays of the morning sun, but he was more eager to take this little rabbit out and about, to experience the thrill of the outer world. It was always dangerous, but he had to learn sometime.

"Follah me."

He slipped from the burrow and into the main runs of the warren, leading the kitten towards the surface.

"It'll be dang'rous, s'do as I say."

He followed eagerly after his pa. "Oh, i promise!" he said eagerly. "I'll listen with both paws and a mouth in my ear!" He had heard a visiting doe say that to his Marli once...he thought. It sounded right.

He scurried up behind his dad, almost crashing into his rump twice. "Oooh, I ain't afraid of any danger, Da! Danger's...uh...danger's like..Marli!" he didn't know anything less dangerous, but a better one would have been a dandilion puff.

He felt the blast of cold morning air rush in, the sun just beginning to rise in the east. He shuddered. "brrr...its cold, da..." he didn't like the cold, but he was still eager to go outside.

"Et's both paws in yer mouth, kiddo, an yer ears open." The buck chuckled as he neared the entrance of the warren. Already, his nose was busily working to pick up what scents had managed to drift this far in.

Yes, it was chilly, but otherwise nothing seemed out of the normal. No rains had visited, and neither had anything else.

"Y'best be 'fraid of Elil, Baney, they'll snatch ya right up 'n eat ya fer dinner. Doubt yer marli'll be to kind t' 'ear you call 'er elil, either." He belted out laughter, then pushed his head out from the safety of the warren. His mismatched eyes searched their surroundings and his tattered ears swiveled to take in all the sounds the Down had to offer.

Once content, he pushed through and took a few paces out into the chilly morning.

"Seems safe, but y'stick close."

He looked at his paws, then stuffed them into his mouth and lifted his ears. He squeaked as he bit his own paw. "Ow..." he muttered. He shook himself, then listened.

"I am afraid of elil, da." he said. "Elil....elil is like a homba, or a lendri, right?" he had only heard of such beasts. "Da...how do you know which animals are elil and which ones aren't? What animals are in the thousand?"

He clambered out, almost pushing into his Da's side, snuffling the cold air.

He didn't stray far from the entrance, it was far too dangerous for that what with Dogsbane out with him. The grass here wasn't the most delectable, but it was certainly better than nothing.

"Yeah, jest like those. Both 're dangerous to us, as well as the pfeffa. And dogs. A good way t' decide if the creature is in th' thousand, is t' consider all creatures in th' thousand. There is far too many fer us t' count. Anything bigger than you can eat you, from the snake to the hawk to the bear. All are scary creatures...

And you need to avoid the humans just as much. Those two-legs are nothing but trouble. Here, eat up m'lad! Yer a growin' kitten, s'you need plenty!"

He looked at the cropped, limp grass and made a face. The flay his father always brought was cool and green, but he watched his father for a moment, then began to nibble at the tips of the grass, not going for the bases.

"Would another rabbit eat me, da?"

He then paused and went erect. The wind rushed across the down and he trembled. "ELIL!?" He shouted, never having heard such a wind. it...it howled.

"I w'ud 'ope not!" The buck chuckled at his son's question and pressed his nose to Dogbane's dusty fur to calm him. Of course, he wouldn't know the strange noises nature made on a regular basis. It would take some time for him to learn completely.

Ah, to be that young again!

"That was jest th' wind, son, nothin' more. Good to be wary o' sounds y'ain't 'eard before, though. And naw, a rabbit ain't goin' t' eat ya. Maybe rough y' up a bit if'n you get on 'is bad side, but he ain't goin' t' eat ya like the elil."

He relaxed a bit as he went back to his flay. His dad knew everything. His dad was smart and fast and brave. If he said there was nothing to fear, there wasn't.

But he was always curious about that tag. He had been told not to speak of it by his Marli, but the question popped out.

"Da...where did you get the stubby in your ear?"

Hallowfell's mismatched eyes rested on his runty youngster and his bosom swelled with pride as he watched him nibble on what remained of the fresh grasses near the warren's entrance. He ran his paws over his chest as he groomed himself. He wasn't hungry yet, though he would be later. He would come up and siflay himself, once his young son was safe within the warren. He wanted to try and keep the closest watch possible on the little one.

"Well, y'know, s' a scary story. I c'n tell ya, but y'might 'ave nightmares. Doubt yer marli would be too pleased wi' me."

He raised his head and stopped chewing, eyes wide for a second with fear, then relaxing and becoming sharp again. "I ain't afraid! I ain't even a'scared of the general!" he boasted. In his mind, he was lying- he had nightmares about the General sometimes, though he could only imagine from the tales what he looked like.

He slid a little closer to his Da. "Pleaseee?" he asked.

"Don't be a fibber, boy, no 'ne likes a fibber, y'know." Hallowfell chuckled softly as he chided the young kitten. He sat up on his haunches and peered about them both for a moment, double checking for elil that might be in the area.

"I good 'n well know yer 'fraid of ol' Gen'ral Woundwort. Y'gotta be, 'e's the frightenin' sort an y'know 'e comes to steal away bad little kittens!" His tattered ears swiveled and his nose twitched. Everything seemed clear for now.

"Well, aw'right, I guess I'll tell ya, but don't ya get scared or nothin' and don't tell yer Marli. Y'see, a long, long time ago, I lived in a differn't warren wi' lots o' other rabbits. It was pretty big 'n all, an I was in th' Owsla as an officer. I was a young rabbit then, y'see."
