She had almost forgotten her past sadness, having had it replaced by the attention of a doting male named Lesu. Not that he was..overly doting, but he was attentive, and so much more kind than Timur had been. But she hadn't minded Timur's gruff attitude. She had thought him to just be a grump. She had to admit though, Lesu's attention seemed, better. She was happier lately, and even had taken to traveling with the male.
They had stopped under the shade of a tree, since the heat of the day was quite upon them. Though she looked at Lesu, her eyes looking excited and gleaming. She knew he'd likely not go far from the Watering hole. Not yet, and she didnt blame him. But a few hour journey would not hurt him, and in fact he had been enjoying it. Or at least she thought he did.
"So how long you wanna rest for?" She asked, her smile wide.

While Lesu had company at the watering holes, he could not recall having company while traveling since the time he was a pup. Alone, he didn’t even have the comfort of the water, and he felt detached and uncertain of where he was at. The only reassurance he had was that he was following the water and would, hopefully, come across it. There was also that inner panic that he would not spot the watering hole and be left uncertain of where he would get water or if he would see it again. The watering holes were the only reliable places in his life, and it was all he had in the end. It had been there when his family left, and he felt it would always be there.
But Esper was a great distraction to keep his mind from worrying about his surroundings or looking here and there for any signs of the glistening water. He talked with her, and also enjoyed her there, silent, beside him. When the sun finally rose to it’s peak and the burden of the sun was on them, they sought shelter under a tree. Feeling relaxed and now relieved at finding water, he turned to flop down and then rolled onto his back, scooting this way and that to rub his back before simply going still, tongue out and eyes looking at the female. When near water, Lesu was a very easy going hyena.
“I do not mind how long we stay. I could nap and I could play right now. I feel a bit of both. It’s very odd.” he said with a large grin. He rolled onto his stomach, tail wagging and back now light brown from the dirt. “What do you want, Esper? Let’s say today is your day? Do you want to do something? Anything! Bark the first thing that comes to mind.”

She knew he had felt someone alone and she had been doing her best at keeping him busy and happy. She smiled when he spoke of her having her own day.. She had never felt so special before, and she could not believe that she had gotten lucky enough to be around such a pleasant character.
"Today is my day? Oh goodness I could do a great many things. We could..We could.." She knew what she wanted, but she wasnt sure if it was too early in their friendship to ask of such things. She wanted nothing more than to sit here in the shade, and just have him cuddle next to her. She wanted that connection, and she sought for it within him.
"Uhm, oh nevermind." She chuckled, and smiled a wide grin.
"We could maybe look for pretty beetles, or something.. You could tell me a story.." She sighed with a content happiness.

He tilted his head, wondering what she had been first thinking, but she seemed to have changed her mind, Going with it, he gave a toothy grin. “A story? Well then, a story it is. Let me see….let me see….ah ha!” He yipped as he got to his feet and shook before standing tall. “Once upon a time….there was ..an unbearable sun! ” Lesuk looked up to show the sun above that was high in the sky and made going out hard. “And it had caused many months of drought. The animals were dying and heat. Pleading, they assembled and called up to the great pack above. You seen, in those days, there was a pack of cloud walkers. A pack of hyena that walked about the sky and herded the clouds, chasing them this way and that to form bigger clouds just like pushing herds together on the ground below. The Cloud walkers were a pack of gods and goddesses. Hyena gods and goddesses, and their king heard the mortals below and he asked, “Why should I help those who are on the ground.”” Lesuk puffed to show off how a hyena king might look and gave a very deep voice, looking down at a ant as if it was the little mortals on the ground.
“Now….” Lesuk let his eyes wander until he noticed his back and perked up. “Yes. This is when the Dirt Walkers came. The Dirt walkers were the pride of mortals on the ground. They herded the animals who fed off the ground and needed the water from the Cloud Walkers. They were lead by a prince.” He puffed up, grinned. Clearly, Lesuk was the prince. “The prince came out and called up to the king of the Cloud Walkers. “Sir. If you give us water, I will give you a favor when the time comes.” Of course the Cloud King laughed, but he was amused and asked his sons to herd some clouds. The King was greedy you see, and he liked favors. And so the water came and the earth was fresh.” He turned about and grinned at Esper.
padding over, he nudged her. “But you see, there was a princess of the Cloud Walkers and one day, she was in danger. Come on now, Esper. Up. Up. You need to be the princess. I can’t play all the parts!” He laughed and nudged her to get her up.

She would indulge her thoughts one day, maybe. She was still much to frightened of him leaving her like Timur had done only months ago. She was growing to be so fond of this male.. She would prefer just to leave it as it was going for the moment. Time would tell if anything would happen between the two, though she hoped and hoped with all her might that it would...That it could..
When he began his story, she settled against him, though still a friendly touch that she gave. She was not good with intimate, but she was a touchy hyena. He had grown used to that, or so she assumed, as he had yet to say anything against her actions.
'Oh no!" She gasped when he told her of the animals dying of the heat. It was possible, she was sure. The sun could be so cruel sometimes! But she liked to think it was just the way the circle of life worked.
When she was fully into the story, she jumped up at his command. She would love to play the part of the princess! Having never been one before, she was unsure what to do. So she stood, and blushed a bit, with a little smile on her maw.
"Okay!" She said with a nod, letting her blonde mane bob up and down.
"What did the princess do?" She asked, her voice obviously entranced by the story he was telling.

He shook with enjoyment, his tail wagging and his chest puffed out at his new role as storyteller. “Oh, be frightened princess. You, the most beautiful in the Cloud Pack, have caught the eye of the King of the Wind Pack. He had threatened your family by creating great tornadoes that have ripped up the earth and moved the clouds all about. Your father fears for your life, and has to hide you, but knows that he cannot with all the clouds being swept in by the Wind Pack. It’s only time that you are discovered and taken by force to be his mate!”
He hoped over and stood firm on all fours. “But there is hope! The King of the Clouds has remembered what the Mud Pack offered, and has come to him in his hour of need. He has to hide the Princess here in the ground. She must not leap into the air and fly off if she is to be discovered, and must stay with this new prince for a time. She must be so heartbroken to leave hier family, but it is best. ”
Lesu shook himself and then pranced to brush up against Esper’s side. “My Princess. I will make sure that the Wind King does not find you. Here. We will hide below these trees and those up above cannot spot you. Look. I’ll show you ALL there is here that you do not see up from the sky. We have trees full of fruit and birds of rainbow plumage. Our grass is plush and sweeps with the breeze. Our animals dance and play to the night and day, and the world smells sweet with flowers. Do you like all these new things you see, Princess?” He grinned and nudged her.

She feigned fear, and made a gasp as she kind of swayed a bit. "Oh dear! We must save my family. But what is a little princess like myself supposed to do? After all, he is the King of the Wind Pack." She nodded, and looked up at him to expect him to continue with the story. She was really beginning to see it in her mind, and the fact that she played the part made her smile inside. She loved what they were doing..Though she wasnt sure what it really was.
She thought of her own father, and gave a little grunt as she listened on. She perked up a bit, and cocked her head. "She must remain locked in the earth? Oh no! That could not be any fun at all!" She cried out, her eyes looking a bit worried for the princess in the story now.
She blushed as he brushed against her, and leaned into him and nudged his cheek with her nose. She gave a little smile, and batted her eyelashes. Though she was so unsure on how to actually get anyone interested in her.
She listened to his description, and her mouth formed an O as she thought of all the things to see. She loved bright colors, and dancing too? She loved to do those little things, and the prince was going to save the princess!
For a moment, she forgot she was actually in a Role of the story, and that he was not talking directly to her. Her eyes closed dreamily and she spoke softly.
"Oh I love them all, My prince."

Lesu tail puffed at the touch, as he had not been with anyone in a long time, and hadn’t been brushed against, nuzzled, or even pawed at since he was young. It brought fire to his spirit and he was even more fueled to tell his story, taking the part of the prince easily as he pranced about. “They are hard to complement your beauty, princess.” He pranced about as a noble might and then stopped, back to the part as of the storyteller. “As they lived together, the prince started to fall in love with the princess, and was even more protective of her. At the same time, the King of the Wind Pack grew even more furious with each day, and he took the cloud pack prisoner. He found from one of them that the Earth Prince took the princess, and he sent all the howling winds down. He beat the eat, tearing up the trees, sweeping up the animals, and blowing it down until it began to look like a wasteland. Without clouds, the sun came out and burned the grass and made great fires.”
“The people of the Earth wanted to turn in the Princess, but the Earth King refused. To save her, he took her away and hid her in a ground, telling her to stay safe before going off to help his people.” Lesu looked about and found a large, palm leaf and taking it, set it upon Esper’s head to show she was hidden. It made a lovely cap. “ It was while he was away that the Wind King found the prince and took him prisoner. He swept him up into a tornado that spun and spun, keeping the Earth Prince in the air and unable to touch the ground to save himself.”
“From the ground, the Princess heard of all of this, but had promised not to leave. So she cried. She cried for her family. She cried for the Sky. She cried for the Earth, and most of all, for the Prince who tried to save her. As she did, the water rose and went up into the ground, and created a great river. It sparkled like the moon and brought back life around it’s banks. The Wind King was furious to see life in where he wanted to create death, and went down to tear up this river, but the wind only rippled it and made waved. He pounded it with wind, but it did nothing, and still the Princess cried, and still the river grew. Tired, the King of the Wind looked down and saw himself in the reflection of the river. He saw himself, angry and cruel, and was afraid. He saw what he became. ”
“And so the King of Wind returned the cloud people, who created the clouds and brought new rain for the people of earth to live again. The Earth Prince was lowered back to earth, and he rushed off to free the Princess.” He took the leaf off her head and nuzzled her. “You’re free Princess!”
“ It was then that the father of the Clouds came and seeing them together, married them both. Together, they became fog, clouds of the earth that roamed the ground, and on cool nights, they would rise from the river and the grass fields and walk together for all eternity.”
He jumped about, wagging his tail, before he walked over and plucked a feather, going back and setting it upon her head like a blossom crown. “Queen of Fog. ”

If Esper had known it had been so long that he had been touched or loved on, she likely would have given him the respect of his space. But she was having far too much fun with the story, and the talk of princes and princesses. Could she really be a princess? She supposed not. Hyenas were not princesses.. Though some lions thought they could be. Which, who knew, maybe they were. She thought of her adopted sister Val, and how that lioness had grown to be quite prestigeous. She gave a little smile. Yes, some lions could be royalty. She could just feel it.
She watched his prancing with great fascination. He had so much energy, that she felt she was part of the story. She was in it, and so was Lesu. It was so real to her, that it gave her great excitement. She wagged her fluffy little tail, and continued on.
When the large leaf was placed over her head, she giggled, and did her best to look at him from under it. Though the darned thing kept blocking her eyes! She could only imagine what would happen if she was truly hidden in the ground!
"Oh thats absolutely dreadful Lesu.. Who wants to be buried in the ground?"
She thought of the princess crying, and it brought a tightened feeling to her chest. Married? Love? Happy? She wasnt used to such things.
But she looked up and made eye contact with Lesu once the story ended, and she gave a soft smile, though a rose colored blush hit her cheeks.
"That was amazing Lesu. You're a great story teller." She beamed.
She was sure now..Lesu, was her Earth Prince, and she longed to be his Queen of fog.

He was very proud of his story, and even more excited that he got to tell it. “Thank you. I felt a bit rusty back there, but I manage. I use to tell my siblings stories all the time, and they told me stories too. We spent a lot of time keeping each other company and talking and sharing the fables that were from our parents and we heard on the way. Then we even made some of our own, but I think that if we thought them, the gods must have put them in our heads to know. They wouldn’t be in our heads without them after all. Sometimes…” he moved closer, as if it was a secret. “…I’ll sleep by the river and swear I hear it whispering. I think it’s telling me things when I sleep, since only dreaming can you hear the world, and it will tell me these stories. It had been around much longer than I have been and must have learned everything.”
He paused, looking out at the river. This patch was going to dry up and move on. It all dried up and moved on, and if he never followed, he’d be lost and alone. “I wish it would just stay in place…….” His energy was draining before her very eyes, and he sat his tail down beside her, feeling somber. He missed his siblings who had left to make their own lives, forgetting their lives by the river. Forgetting him.
He smiled again, and looked at her. “When you find what you are looking for, will you come visit me sometime?”

She smiled, and wondered what it was like to be told stories and to tell stories all the time. This was the first story she had ever heard, as her family had never really been a family of storytellers. She felt a bit saddened that she never had that, but she smiled, and nodded. At least he had been close to his family. That was important to her.
"Oh thats wonderful! You should tell me every story it whispers." She said, nodding and her eyes gleaming with excitement. She really liked this male. She always had since she met him. She was entirely too happy to be in his presence, and since Timur had left her, she hadnt wanted to be attached.. But.. in her heart, her dreams, her future included children and happiness.. Children and a mate and a family like her mother and father.
When he asked if she would come to visit, she paused and cocked her head. Was it wrong to not want to leave anymore? He could come with her! Or.. she could stay here. Any way he would be happy, she was sure she would be.
She blushed a little, stammering her words. "I-Uh..What if.. What if I didnt want to leave." She said quickly, her voice rushed to make sure she actually said it.

Lesu's face broke into a sad smile as she enjoyed his story, but he felt somewhat deflated now. He used up all his spirit in the story that he was now left nostalgic and thinking of the past, something that always made him unnaturally gloomy. Maybe he was being childish to live in the past and to be telling stories. He was getting older after all.
Before he could think too much down that dark alley of thought, he turned his head at what Esper said. He was almost thinking he heard things, being hopeful and making his wishes vocal. "Stay here..with me? What do you mean? Aren't you looking for something?" It probably was important if she was out here on her own. She was probably feeling bad for him and saying this. "You don't have to feel bad for me to stay. I want you to find what you want to find and be happy. I've been here by the river for a long time. It's nothing new to me. I've ..use to it." It was his choice in life after all, but it was essentially all he ever knew. What else could he possibly do?

She flicked her ears back but only for a moment before she gave a soft smile. She looked at him softly, eyes looking at him as if he was silly, but still she loved him. Wait. She what? She gasped when she realized what it was she felt and then another blush tainted her cheeks. She.. she couldnt tell him that yet, right? Wasnt it too early? She almost didnt care..
"But, being with you makes me happy. In fact.. I think Ive found what it was I was searching for." She answered, eyes looking deep into his, but then looking down at her paws, as she shuffled them in the grassy lands of the riverbank.
"I mean, unless you dont want me to?"

"OH. Nonononono. No. Noo! That's not it. You're very nice and pretty and - But I thought you had something to do - I don't want to keep you here if you don't want to - and it's awfully boring and tedious to follow a river with me - I'm not much or anything like that - I mean looking at me - you must have other offers from much more handsome fellows and - I ..." Lesu had never been wanted by anyone other than his parents, and the fact that Esper was looking at him in that way, a way that said she was serious about being with him NOT as a traveling companion solely, but as something more, made his heart jump into his throat. It was clear he was very inexperienced in matters of females.
He stood there, frozen to the spot, watching her. The soft shuffle of her small, delicate paws, to the way her hair fell before her eyes. Then, just now, the subtle rose-color of her cheeks. She...she liked him? REALLY?!
"You really like me?" Was he being too hopeful, and what then? Did he - Did he like her back? The heart thudding in his throat said Yes. Yes! YES! with every beat. He wished it would have told him sooner than now to throw that surprise there, but he was so sure that Esper would leave that thinking she would stay didn't even enter his head.
The look of shock melted into unsure, nervous, affection. He moved in, and just slowly, touched his nose against her cheek. "...I want you - I want you to stay with me....if you don't mind staying with me."

Her heart pounded in her chest when he started stammering about why he wasnt much. But she wanted to grab ahold of him and shake him if she could. Why couldnt he see how amazing he was, or how happy he had made her. Her last mate had left her for..whatever it was he was seeking in life. She knew what she wanted, and her heart had felt like it would never heal again. But now, here she was, standing with Lesu and feeling that feeling all over again. Except this time.. This time it felt more right.
Her heart was pounding so hard in her chest she almost swore it would break out from her chest and cause her to just die right then and there.
"Lesu, I think youre amazing! Youre everything Ive ever wanted, and you should never doubt yourself. Just being around you, has made me more happy than I ever have been.. Your stories are amazing, and.. And I want to always hear them, and I want to be the princess in that story." She said, conviction in her voice. Oh she hoped he believed her because she meant every word she said.
When he touched his nose to her cheek, she blushed again, and she couldnt help but let out a little giggle of excitement. "Do you really? I.. Id love to." She said, leaning in to give his cheek a little lick of affection.. She had found love, she knew it.. and Lesu, it seemed he felt the same.
