Hm.

I went to right the first line in the fanfiction I suddenly had random, don't ask, inspiration for - ...and I realized. Those little "sama" "chan" things.

=| If they're speaking English, since I'm typing in English - should I do without them and translate like in the dub? (Yeah, I'm mainly thinking about Koenma, here xD) But I noticed people use them a lot in fics, and I dunno if I think that makes sense - but if that's how people feel comfortable reading it...

BASICALLY.

Is it something generally expected? (I've been reading a lot of Fanfiction for things other than anime, so I haven't really been...around that kind of problem?)

I feel stupid for asking. xD But I'm horrible about little details. It's probably why I don't get far. I have no one to check with, and I'm horrible about needing more reassurance than I should. xD

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable. With Koenma, I tend to use "sir," but there isn't necessarily an English equivalent for "san" or "chan." For me, I find it annoying to see random Japanese words thrown into an English fanfiction (with obvious exceptions, such as "makai," or things like that) but when there isn't another way to get the point across, I'm good with that.

And don't worry about needing reassurance. Most fanfiction authors (myself included) need it all the time. XD

I was thinking the same thing. xD Random Japanese words like...baka. D: I never really knew why we needed to mix and match, it always confused me. Especially when a word I had NEVER heard of was used. xD

Sir it is then! I'm used to it - since I followed only the dub. xD

Thaaaank you. heart mrgreen

It all depends on personal preference, in my opinion, and if you're knowledgeable on what you'll be using, i.e., if you don't want to and have no clue what the annotations mean, don't use them! I personally use them here and there and have a few Japanese words in my own fanfiction because I believe it adds to the experience, but that's just my own preference. : )
