Jack could have gone anywhere he wanted. He could have gone to Gambino. He could have gone to Aekea. Hell, he could have even stayed in Barton if he'd wanted to. But instead he stood in a grocery store, one hand supporting a shopping trolley and the other boredly inspecting a box of cereal. Nowhere felt like home anymore. He wasn't entirely sure why he'd even stayed here; this place of all places was full of ghosts. They were everywhere, hiding in coffee shops and on street corners and in cereal boxes. Places he'd been. Places they'd been.

And Damon just stood there, blinking owlishly behind his glasses, wanting. Wanting what, Jack wondered. Attention? Acceptance? Praise? Something he just couldn't give? Throwing the cereal box down, Jack placed his hands under Damon's arms and lifted him tediously onto the side of the trolley, each of the boy's hands grasping at the side for balance. It wasn't even a fatherly gesture, he just wasn't ready for Damon to keep staring at him like that.

He just wasn't ready for Damon, period.

She was running a little ahead of her guardian who was carrying a handheld shopping basket. Nell's arms were extended to either side of her as she ran, her converse sneakers squeaking softly against the linoleum floor. Her body swerved toward the side just barely brushing a hand against the man's side as she made her way down the cereal aisle. She skidded to a stop and twirled around on a toe to gaze at the man and his son with wide eyes, her wings spread open to either side as if to add to her shocked expression, "Oh! I'm so sorry, mister!" she exclaimed in an effort to be polite by apologizing straight away. Her gaze then fell unto the boy on the side of the trolley and she had suddenly decided that that particular boy was going to be her friend, now if only she could make this fact known to him.

Onuris had watched his charge run past the man and flinched a little when she brushed him he quickened his pace a bit to be nearby in case something happened that was too much for his 'daughter' to handle.

Jack only shifted a little, his balance barely compromised as the small girl brushed against him. He turned to give her a comforting (if maybe a little sad) smile and shook a dismissing hand.

"Don't worry," he replied with a shrug. "You hardly touched me at all."

Damon watched the exchange from his place on the trolley, his legs swinging and his face falling into a small frown. In mere seconds of meeting his father this girl had received more attention from the man than he had all day. Tightening his grip on the cold metal support, Damon turned away from the steadily growing crowd and to at the array of colourful cereal boxes in pseudo-interest. Maybe if he ignored them, they'd go away and leave him and his dad alone.

Nell stared at the man for a long moment with curious blue eyes. Something about the smile made her feel sorry for him though she couldn't quite tell why. Well, not sorry for him, but she seemed to sense something about it though she seemed to drop the subject entirely before it even became one and suddenly pointed at the boy and said, "I want him to be my friend, may I play with him?"

It was almost as if she was casually asking the man if she could have his jacket or borrow his pen.

Onuris chuckled a bit and shook his head, "Nell, don't be rude now," he chided lightly.

She flicked her gaze over at her father and shook her head, "I'm not! I said 'may' ... Oh, I forgot 'please' again..." Nell said sheepishly as her cheeks flushed a faint pink.

Damon turned his head to stare incredulously at the, for all intents and purposes, exuberant girl whose name seemed to be "Nell". His frown lessened slightly, his expression shifting from more curious than annoyed, but the frown still remained; she was asking this man if he could play with him? Surely that was a decision that he himself should make, considering it involved his person and not this unknown man's (who was probably connected to the girl someway, possibly her father)? Was this some sort of strange etiquette he hadn't heard of?

He wouldn't be surprised if it was and he just didn't know about it; Jack hardly ever taught him anything.

Proportionately confused, Damon looked over to his father, who seemed to be engrossed in picking between muesli-based and oat-based breakfast bars, and then back at Nell once more.

Nell shifted impatiently for a moment before she moved a bit closer to the boy and reached out her hand to him. Forget permissions she was just going to claim her playmate and they would play! That is what she has decided, "Hi! I am Nell and you are gonna be my friend, I decided this. Your name isn't Steve is it? I don't like the name Steve it sounds funny."

Onuris sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. This wasn't proper but he was just going to let it fly for now. He glanced over at Jack, "Excuse me, sir? Is it alright if my daughter plays with your son? She seems pretty insistent on it," he was trying to get the other man's attention at least a small bit of it before something awful happened.

Surely this person cared about what happened to the boy...?
