The world Qhismet comes from is a place where all the mortal species are based somehow on animals. The world is based off a series of novels I was planning a long while back, and is called, in general, Featherbind. All mortals, if they do not have animal ears, have pointed ears. All mortals have some sort of animal features, though they are not anthros. Their basic body structure is humanoid. Mammals tend to have animal characteristics such as tails, some fur, and sometimes animal-like ears or patterning on the skin.
There are several gods and goddesses in Featherbind, as well as the Servants, which are the equivalent of angels. There are two main deities, Vaiden and Morgiane. The gods/goddesses are mostly human in appearance except for pointed ears, and their Servants tend to be based on various mythical creatures. Servants are separated into three categories, males who serve the god Vaiden, females who serve the goddess Morgiane, and Neutrals, who serve both deities. Neutral Servants are generally Neutrals because they are being punished for misdeeds in a previous life. Most Neutrals strive to do anything they can to get into the good graces of one deity or the other so that they can be reborn with a gender in their next life.
Tech-level in this world is mostly medieval, though a very few of the more intelligent/forward thinking species have started to experiment with steam power. Magic is not widely spread or known about and the only beings with any real power are the Servants. Any mortal who shows magical abilities is assumed to have been given these powers by a Servant - or to have stolen them. The blood of the Servants is what makes them magical, for each Servant's blood is the liquefied form of a particular gemstone - and whatever magical abilities they possess relates back to that gemstone in some way. For example, a Servant might have Amber blood. Amber is said to enhance the beauty of the wearer, it is used to tap into the power of the Sun, and is good for success, abundance, healing, vitality and joy. So, the Servant with Amber blood might have magic relating to any one or multiples of these things. If a mortal manages to harm or kill a Servant and harvest some of their blood, the blood will crystallize into the gemstone and give the bearer some measure of the Servant's power - but usually these stones will also curse the bearer in some way. The blood or tears of a Servant can also voluntarily be given to a mortal and would allow them the same measure of power without the curse.
