I cant express how much i hate when people say "Thats so retarded!" or "Thats so gay!"
People get defensive saying they dont care about being politically correct, but its a matter of feelings and the message those words in that context send. As if being gay or mentally challenged is something to be ashamed of :/

In reguards to "Thats so gay" Has anyone seen those adverts now by the Ad Council?? Where they have GLBT celebrities, correcting teenagers/young adults when they say 'thats so gay!'

2 commericals with Hillary Duff & Wanda Sykes

Another one but i dont know who this white lady is.

In reguards to "Thats so retarded" There is a website where people take a pledge not to say it, and generally want to get a movement stirred, where maybe they can make an ad too!

Said website: http://www.r-word.org/

Do you say these things? Why or why not?
Do you think it's to be politically correct? Do you think it actually impacts how people feel? Do you think other?

I must admit I use the words 'that's so gay' but only in the context to which they were originally intended, my noticing something is rather happy or joyus, and never with derision in my tone. Which is, despite what some numpties may think what the word means. I've never claimed something was retarded...the word doesn't sound right to me, and so I don't use it, unless describing a medical condition.
I've been called a f*****t before, which I think rather odd, as though I'm thin I'd never think I resembled a bundle of sticks used to light a fire, my breasts are too large for me to dissapear in profile after all.

While I think political correctness is turning into more of a hindrance to society than a help, as a white middle class female, I've come to learn that I have very little in the way of rights, and I feel truely sorry for my partner, a white middle class male, who has no rights in this world whatsoever. It has it's place, but it's become so inextricably linked into every day life that one must watch what they say so very carefully.
I doubt that the youth of today will stop saying these things because they're not politically correct, but to inflame things, and as an act of rebellion, as all youth tend to do. Trying to correct them may only make things worse (I speak from experience here).

Oh, and contrary to popular opinion (or so I'm told), I'm not in my middling years...I'm only 22, but being a natural-born cynic, and having been something other than human in a previous incarnation, I tend not to hide my feelings as much as some. In short, I'm sick of seperation based on profile, whether it's race, sexual preference, or religion. It makes me even more furious when I must cow-tow to someone else's ideals, and bite my tongue, just because they hold my future in thier hands.

Wow...I must be under more stress than I had surmised...sorry about that. It seems all is not paradise downunder sweatdrop

heh. no, i don't say these things, i am very particular about my word use. for example, when i say i hate something, i realy mean it. otherwise i will say i dislike it.

Do you think it's to be politically correct? Do you think it actually impacts how people feel? Do you think other?
i have to say, i honestly find it to vary from person to person. my sister has a boyfriend, who says these things all the time, becuse he just finds it normal. he doesn't care. he knows that he doesn't mean anything hurtful by it. a friend of ours had gotten very angry about it, and it caused a HUGE argument. now, my sister's boyfriend continues to do it as much as possible, just to spite her. it's all realy very sad. confused i personally have just decided to drop the topic for a while. but i don't mind discussing it here.

Keep in mind that a lot of gay people say "that's so gay" so why should it be offensive?

And the words retard/retards/retarded are used in different ways than most people think:

re·tard 1 (rĭ-tärd')
v. re·tard·ed, re·tard·ing, re·tards

v. tr.
To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede.
v. intr.
To be delayed.
n.

1.

A slowing down or hindering of progress; a delay.
2.

Music A slackening of tempo.

(dictionary.com)

Why is it that persons get so offended by it? People need to stop taking offense to small things and live life. Its not like either of these words are a slur in any way.

Edit: Hillary Guff is as dumb as a stick of dog crap anyway.

Edit #2: Of all the things in the world to be worried about, why is THIS one of them. Again, their not slurs, so whats the point if getting offended?

Depends on the situation whether I say anything or just walk away. I dont say anything is retarded however, that to me sems to be complete rubbish. However, I will say something is ghay. Which is a different word all together. Personally, I dont care about political correctness. I will say what I please on my off time. This is a great topic though.

heh... this is a very strong hatred of the topic now isn't it? =w= might i ask why you find it so upsetting or wrong for people to think that it isn't an appropriate way to express negetivity about something? yeah, some people get offended by it, but other than taking offence there is the simple fact that the misuse of words makes it easy to fforget what the words in question realy mean, and therefore lose their grammatical value.

I say both of them.

And if someones going to get so easily offended by a word that isnt even used in that context, then they need to go live under a rock. Worse things will be said in life.. get over it.
