User ImageA freshly stripped carcass laid at the base of the tree, standing tall and looming over the settling darkened distance. Night was rolling in, but that was how some liked it. A dark blue, but brightly accented figure sitting against the tree had no doubt in his mind that dark times simply meant a better time for more things of interest to occur. It was when it wasn't so hot to waste away in heated lethargy, when the day really came to life, and when unseen fun could be had. The sun's dismissal along with the lit skies that accompanied it were truly a blessing gone unrecognized.

But this male lion chose to notice its glory.

There were many things to choose from in which to occupy oneself with the rest of the night. He had already hunted, filling a now content belly... But that also meant he lost the only other company he had for the moment. But it wasn't that much of a matter; he always found more friends and faces to indulge the day away. A small rest was in order, after the meal, and then he promised himself he would walk out from the tree that marked his place.

"Ahh, the life," he told the tree, thinking that no one would hear him other than his bark-covered companion, "You're pretty comfortable, my tree."

And with that, he lowered himself more onto the tree's roots, lowering his gold and silver eyes to a half-lidded gaze across the horizon. His streaked tail twitched unnoticed by the owner, draping itself at a stretch across the ground. Time always flew by in quietness of thought; he would, however, always surely move on once boredom made itself known.

It was magic hour; time caught somewhere between day and night, when the moon and the stars declared themselves rulers of the sky, and victors over the ageless, cyclical war against the light and heat of the sun. Asmidiske moved like water across the savannah. She was sleek and smooth; simple, yet lovely and entranced by the world that swirled around her as night wrapped its silky fingers around the land.

She'd just awoken from a nap, after a particularly good day. It had been peaceful and quiet; she'd bathed, and hunted and ate until she was full, and then slept until she couldn't sleep any longer. Such was life for the young lioness, who was as much in love with herself as it was possible to be. It was days, followed by nights, like these that made her confident in goodness and the indisputable reality that the world must love her. Happiness was too easy for it to be otherwise.

It was with a sweet little smile on her face that Asmidiske, absently contemplating the possibility and properties of fate, happened upon a lion speaking to a tree. First, it occured to her that he was probably insane. Then, she noticed exactly how handsome (his fur practically shimmered in the dieing light of the sun!) he was and promptly changed her mind. Beautiful things weren't crazy; it just wouldn't be right. She paused, mid-stride, and continued to watch him with a half-curious, half-perplexed expression on her pretty face.

Quiet by nature, but friendly at heart, Asmidiske sighed and took a couple of inquisitive steps towards the male. The pads at the bottom of her paws made soft sounds as they connected with the earth. She'd reasoned that he must be kind, if he enjoyed the company of trees, but remained hesitant to get very close. Just in case. The world had surprised her before. There was still a chance his mind might not be all there.

"Hello," she greeted him. Her voice was soft. "Are you asleep?"

In his undeniably comforting rest against the tree, it wasn't surprising to see the dark blue lion rendered blinder to any signs of oncoming life. Sighs were lost to him, as well as the fact that a female had been watching, staring at him, and then tiny steps made his ear twitch in alertness as the earth vaguely gave away its walker.

A golden eye flickered forward to watch something blue and beautiful coming towards him. That was something he liked very much. Her meek appearance coupled with her soft-spoken introduction signaled to the male that he had a sweet, gentle girl on his paws here, and he appreciated those types very much--they were like shining, brilliant jewels in a mass of jagged, crooked stones. He smiled in enthusiasm, then, and lifted a paw to motion for her to come closer, next to him. Even though it may not have been comfortable for many to trust him in a matter of seconds to acquiesce to a request that left them more vulnerable than they could have been standing at a safer distance, he was sure his friendly and confident air was enough to at the very least tempt the lioness into being his company.

"Just introspecting," he replied, "Join me, will you? This tree's strong enough to hold both of our thoughts. And comfy, as a bonus. What brings someone as cute as you around here and alone at night?"

His slender tail moved away from the ground it had been resting on, as if to clear an open spot for the lioness. It swayed peacefully, then, creating a long, moving shadow in the wake of the moon's rays.

Oh, joy! He was friendly, and very handsome, and he thought she was cute, so clearly he couldn't be crazy. The tentative smile on her face widened in delight, and made the corners of her eyes crinkle. Asmidiske, enamoured by the male's open, tree-speaking disposition (she wondered if he was a spiritual lion) was only too eager to oblige his request.

"I'd love to join you," her heart did a little flip-flop as she took the place previously occupied by his tail. It was not wise, she knew, to accept such offers from relative strangers, but therein lay the thrill. The whole situation, from the listening tree to this male's nonchalant demeanour and golden eye, seemed almost magical. How could a girl possibly resist?

"I was simply walking. Though, I suppose I should look for a place to sleep before the moon is too high." She spoke modestly; never one to share too much too soon, and far more interested in what he had to say anyways. It did occur to her flirt a little, to keep him interested, and she glanced coyly over shoulder; "I wonder- how this tree, though it is very pretty and certainly an excellent listener, could be so lucky as to be your confidant."

The female didn't even need to speak of her acceptance to his request - he saw it in her eyes right before she pronounced it. He was pleased to hopefully and properly conclude then, that this lioness was immediate in her honesty and truthfulness. He was also glad that she held no hesitance when she came next to him--the lack of wait was something he could equally match.

But there were some things that had to wait, as he respected the female's space as she drew up; he did not even bother to shift his body towards hers, and instead stayed firm and composed, simply tilting his head over to listen to the lioness. He was amused by her words, and aware of the perhaps hidden implications in them. Regardless, he gave in, appreciating the ego boost he was sure she consciously chose to give.

"Walking is good," he commented plainly at first, just a hint of a smile on his muzzle, "It often leads to great things. Favorable experiences sometimes too, I would say. I hope you aren't too weary from your travels?"

He then added a second later, "And I also hope you would give me the pleasure of knowing your name?"

Usually, he would have stopped then, being the type to favor answers right after his questions, but he regarded the last words of the lioness good enough to elicit a response. He did like it when females, rare as they did, also returned the confidence males would normally display in this specific type of interaction.

"And this tree sure knows how to pick alright; I am sure it is not just by luck or accident that you are here with me now, don't you think?" he winked, liking this game the two started, "You did say you were looking for a place to rest for the night, and I also happen to be on friendly terms with this den nearby, and a quaint pond right in front of it. A bit aways, but I did say that walking is good."

"Oh, yes, I agree," she smiled up at him through her eyelashes, expression purposefully shy and designed to be endearing, "Walking is very good, and I have had only favourable experiences so far."

Asmidiske left it up to him to find the second implication not-so-subtly hidden in her sweet voice. She was a very good flirt, if a little bit of a tease, and positively adored games of this nature. A whimsy and a romantic, it pleased her to have so much of this charming male's attention.

"I am not too tired," she informed him graciously, but never revealed more than he was asking for, "My name is Asmidiske and, you are?"

His next statement and the way he winked made her heart flip-flop once more, and heat rose in her cheeks. Oh, this was such fun. It was nice to meet a man who knew how to play as well as she did and, so far, he had been nothing but gentle. He was handsome and witty, and he liked her. She was certain of his goodness.

"I could use a drink, and I might like to be on friendly terms with that den, as well," she murmured, "Do you think it will like me?"

Oh, he loved coy females. But at the same time, they put him in conflicting plights. While the nature of the introverted allowed the individual to be more calculating, careful, but clever in the words and actions that do come out, they still came with... problems that had to be solved without knowledge of what the problem exactly is. Due to their reserve, it was harder to perceive their thoughts and predictability. And despite the fact that the male trained himself at a young age to do exactly that to others, it still was a love-hate relationship; he liked the game and challenge, but hated the impatience that came had he wanted to stick around long enough to figure someone out.

"So far, hmm?" he repeated after her last words thoughtfully, and smiling as he finished the thought with, "I'm not the type to break traditions, so no need to worry. They call me 'Dude'. Asmidiske is a mouthful, isn't it? Cute name. Suits its owner."

If he didn't know better, Asmidiske's face had gotten rosier over the brief few moments of their encounter. He refrained from slyly smiling at the sight, and instead nodded fervently at her question.

"Might?" he emphasized the one evil word in the statement prior to the question, "I don't think it would appreciate you being very picky like that; how would you like it if you were a form of shelter and someone passed you by, thinking you're too dirty, or not good enough for their soft skin?"

"...But it'll probably like you. One of those 'any friend of Dude's is a friend of mine' thing. Shall we?"

With that, he gestured for Asmidiske to go in the direction of the mentioned place; it was a "ladies first" thing for him.

The delighted flush under her cheeks darkened further at his compliment, but there was nothing else about her appearance or her posture that might have signalled her surprise at being called cute. It was not that she did not think herself attractive. No, Asmidiske was strong enough in her convictions and her sense of self to think herself rather beautiful. But it was one thing to sit at the edge of a pond, admiring your own reflection, and another thing entirely to hear from the lips of a handsome lion.

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Dude,” the lioness bobbed her head in a sweet little nod, and then laughed at his question. It was a tinkling, flirtatious sound; genuine, but flighty and fragile. Asmidiske was a good humoured girl, but she was also quiet. She did not laugh often.

“It is fortunate for me, then, that I am a woman and not a form of shelter.”

She was also impeccably groomed, with fur that was smooth to the touch. It looked very healthy. Asmidiske made a point of looking after herself.

“I am glad to know you, Dude, and I am curious about this friend of yours. I hope it likes me, like you say that it will.”

And then she was up on her feet in one fluid, graceful movement and heading in the direction that he had gestured. She was moving with a purpose; showing off in front of him, and flashed a smile over her shoulder every once in awhile— to make sure that he was there, and that she was headed in the right direction.

A wiser girl would have thought twice about being so familiar with a stranger, but Asmidiske wasn’t worried. Dude was a good man. She could tell.
