I was good when I hatched, wasn't I Ayishiamine? Not angry or mean like that brown and bronze...is this why I'm coming along? To show we aren't all mean? Ptoth plodded along at Ayi's heels, head turned to watch his bonded more than where they were going, eyes whirling a brilliant blue against his softer blue cheeks. Is it a mission? I like missions....just like I'll like flying us to places when I'm allowed. We'll always be busy...

"Oh you silly dragon," she said with a soft sigh, her brain awash in further babble from her blue that she wasn't fully paying attention to. "It's a mission alright. A mission to make sure that poor boy I helped before you nearly knocked me over in excitement didn't die from careless dragon claws. Also, it's to make sure you don't run off in search of something to do while I'm away. You know you mean well, but I'm pretty sure the Weyrlingmaster said that you shouldn't be trying to carry things around the Weyr just yet."

Ptoth hummed pleasantly, not taking offense but only because it was his mine who said that. It's good to help the Weyr. His tone carried no inflection, just stating the truth. I suppose we can wait a few days.

Ayi reached down to caress her dragonet's cheek as they walked through the corridor towards where she was told the injured boy...Panata, right?...from the hatching was to be found. She knew the Weyr well enough, but to actually be looking for a relative stranger was kind of odd. Very few in the Weyr actually cared to talk to her for longer than ten minutes.

The click of talons accented the muffled thump of her shoes on the stone as they turned a corner and she found herself met with a door. She paused, unsure, but Ptoth did not wait. Using his muzzle, he parted the door from the frame and stood with half his head in the room and half out.

It stinks in there.

She groaned inwardly at her dragon's lack of inhibition. If he thought this was a mission, he was determined to get it over and done. No subtly here.

"Uh...Panata? Is this Panata's room?" She let her voice raise so it might carry better, but cringed when she thought that he might be sleeping.

He felt idle, so very idle, not to mention a little sore and in want of a good walking around. Panata had never been the type to lay around more than he needed too even when allowed, so the fact that he'd been restricted to the bed for a while longer by a rather bossy healer left him irritated and bored. His sides ached when he breathed in too deeply and it was hard to get into a comfortable laying position, Faranth knows how hard he'd tried to find a way to take a nap to pass the time.

He had just about given up trying to lay down when a creaking at the door brought his attention away from the bed and how uncomfortable he was, and for a moment Panata thought it may have been someone in passing until he saw a Blue head poke itself through. Almost right away his blood ran cold in his veins and his fingers tightened against themselves inside a fist. This most certainly wasn't the same Blue, right? It had impressed and wouldn't come after him, right?

Such deadglow thoughts haunted him until a female voice rang in the air, his name the subject of the question. Panata didn't recognize it, but still he answered anyway. It would have been rude not to.

"Yes? Can I help you?"

At the confirmation, Ayishia dared to push the door open further and push her head in as well, which was quite the feat considering a large hunk of dragon was already doing the same. Before turning her gaze around the room, she awaited an exclamation along the lines of "Privacy please!" or something to prevent possible embarrassment for herself or Panata.

"I don't know if you remember me, given the circumstances at the time, but I was just coming to check to see that my hasty wraps of robe hem didn't make things worse for the healers when they went about putting you back together." Not always one for verbal tact, she didn't know if he'd take what she said rudely or not, and she didn't care all that much as -she- knew she wasn't trying to offend, just stating the truth.

It still smells funny, Ptoth complained openly for both his rider and for Panata to hear, whuffing heavily as the stench of numbweed wafted up his sensitive nose. Must be a boy in here...girls never have such a weird smell.

The female snorted a little at that but quickly grew somber. "We can leave if now's not a good time. Really. I mean, you're obviously still alive..."

But the mission!

"Hm, no, you're more than welcome to come in and stay a while. I could use the company, actually, since I can't seem to fall asleep."

Panata smiled warmly at the girl and her dragon, his feelings still a little wishy-washy towards the Blue that had wandered in, though whent he girl spoke again about wrapping his side, he placed her face a little better.

"OH, I! I meant to actually thank you for that! You did your best to help me at the time, and I didn't even say thank you. You impressed so quickly after, and then I was told I was in another accident with the final egg, so I couldn't even go to the Feast afterwards to find and greet you."

At the words in his mind about the smell, Panata turned his focus down towards the dragon and chuckled a little, his mood still wavering but a bit lighter.

"I don't think I smell so bad, but maybe you're just not used to all the different smells of the Weyr? I could stink though, since I haven't been able to properly shower in a few days."

She allowed herself to turn her head now and actually focus on the boy's form, not surprised to see him in bed, but feeling sorry that he was. The whole ordeal was just dreadful.

"The last dragon was confused and worried about not finding their bonded, I guess....that's all I could gather at the time anyway. It happened so fast." She frowned and brushed her bangs away from her eyes as she pushed the door open and scooted around Ptoth, who was making an odd face and sniffing the air pensively. "I'm not sure if that dragon is to be so spastic all the time or if this was a one time occurrence. Frankly, I could go for a little less drama from ALL of them...but anyway, I see the Healers have you settled alright. I'm not much of a medic myself, but I learned enough from the older folk to know basics. I'm glad I could help."

Ptoth finally gave up playing reluctant dragon and finally also entered the room, promptly taking up position at her heels and lightly pressing his side to her leg for contact comfort.

It's not a bad stinky smell like dead wherry...but it's a weird smell. Makes my nose tingle funny. Ptoth experimentally sniffed in close proximity to the boy's arm, since that's all he could reach.

"It's numbweed, my dear. The stuff they will make you use someday after you go and hurt yourself, as I hear dragons tend to do. Especially adventurous ones like yourself." She reached out for the jar of the salve that she spied nearby and swooped it low to the blue's nose so he could make the connect. Ptoth, not being the brightest, jammed his muzzle into the paste. The smell made him make a funny squawk and he lifted his head up and away, snorting repeatedly, nearly hitting the side of his jaw on the bed that Panata lay upon. Ayi chuckled, then offered the jar to Panata.

"Need any, or are you doing alright?"

My nose feels...nothing. A childlike tone of curiousity colored the words, as if he didn't quite get the concept of what numbweed did vs. it's very name.

"I...don't really think I can blame the dragon for what happened to me, if that's what you're wondering about too. I've been asked by a few of the healers since they want to know if I'm planning on staying at the Weyr, and I've decided that I'd rather stay here than go home. Next time on the sands I'll just learn to move quicker, right?"

Panata laughed a little nervously, though the smile never fell from his face. In truth he still felt a little afraid around dragons, around Blues probably more than any other color, but he wouldn't let that drag him down. He couldn't let anyone know what else he was feeling, at least not for a while.

As Ptoth moved around and Ayi gave him a snoutfull of numbweed, the boy watched with amusement at the interactions the pair shared. It was great to have company, he'd been lonely, even better that they made him laugh. When her questions turned towards him, he politely shook his head.

"I'm fine thank you,. I'm not in any pain. They take very good care of me since I was hurt the worst."

She sealed the jar after rolling her eyes at Ptoth's confusion and set it back so that it could be found once it was needed, then allowed herself to lean against the bed casually.

"That's good that you'll try again. I guess accidents are pretty common during Hatchings, but I'm sure you'll be fine next time...besides, maybe next time you'll Impress right away and get to be off to the side. Takes care of that problem quite nicely, don't you think? Ptoth took his time, but I'm kind of glad he did. I'm glad I was there to help."

The dragonet wriggled his nose a few more times, growing resigned about the lasting numbness, and instead set his head on the bed next to his bonded with eyes whirling a contented blue.

I knew you were there Ayishiamine, but I wanted things to calm down before I came to get you. You were busy and doing good things, even though I really just wanted you to feed me and be mine.

"Maybe. I was wondering for a while if I would be allowed to stand at the next hatching since I got hurt badly during this one, but isn't the only thing that stops us from continuing on our age? I heard several people in here talk about how many of those who stood this time won't be able to stand again."

Panata was half right on what he thought, though the healers had been talking about the Candidates who had been killed when the last dragon ran through the terrified crowds. He had not been awake to see any of that, so it was natural for him to assume something else.

"If I do Impress next time, I hope its to a pretty Blue like Ptoth, he seems so friendly and nice. I like Brown dragons too, but the ones we had this time were very different from what I had expected."

She pursed her lips thoughtfully at the question and thought through other hatchings she'd watched. She did remember some faces returning time and time again, but she couldn't recall any not being allowed to stand again because of an injury.

"No," she started, still thinking. "I think you are right about the age thing. I remember a lot of kids going to hatchings for turn after turn until they aged out. I heard some of 'em talking about how they couldn't stand again and I'm pretty sure it's because they were going to be too old the next time there's a clutch...they looked pretty old to me anyway. Besides, I think that's kind of unfair to not be able to stand because of something that might not be your fault. Accidents happen all the time." She patted his arm in sympathy. "Though, I can ask the weyrlin...D'astel about it if you want." She had forgotten that the Weyrlingmaster was currently MIA, but she was curious on this topic now it had been brought up. Shells, she might even ask him anyway, if not for Panata 's sake, but her own.

Ptoth looked exceedingly pleased with the praise he was receiving and took it upon himself to sit a little straighter and lift his head off the bed, allowing a prideful aura overtake him.

I don't think many of them were very nice...but it's hard to know what will happen at a Hatching. It is never the same, I have heard, so expectations will always be off. He shrugged, as though it were a fact of life that Panata should just accept. I am a good dragon though and Mine is a good rider. You will be good with Yours, as all dragons are with their rider. You just know better than most what to do if another crazy one heads your way.

Ayi grinned some. "I hear some dragons like the rough and tumble, scarred type. In the meantime, you've got a good story to tell anyone who wasn't there."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 08, 2009 4:43 pm

"The rough and tumble type? Me?"

Panata pointed to himself, a little incredulous to what Ayi was saying, and he did his best not to laugh loudly. There was nothing rough about him, he was small and mousy, but he certainly was scarred. Did dragons really go for appearances, or was it all just personality like he'd been lead to believe? He didn't know and could always ask, but that seemed like a waste of time right now. The next hatching was a long time away, the Queen or Jr. Queen probably wouldn't ride for another Turn or so.

At the Blue's words in his head Panata felt a little shiver of fear go down his spine, not used to it despite thinking it was still something of an honor to be bespoken to by a dragon that wasn't his. It sounded like Ptoth was trying to make him feel better by saying he now knew better, but wasn't that also a way of pointing out that he'd been a deadglow in the first place to try things? Being reminded didn't necessarily make him feel better, though he smiled politely.

"You're both right though, in a way. I suppose at the next Hatching I'll just have to stand near the back, or listen to the older Candidates instead of rushing ahead. I didn't think I could be so impulsive, it was hardly like me at all. I guess the Hatching just makes us all into different people, don't you think?"
