*sigh* "It's no use today, Penners..." With her back to the nearest tree, Cab slid down to a sitting position and tilted her head back until it made contact with the bark. Beside her a pale brown Rattata reached out and patted her knee with a concerned look on her face.
"Tatta?"
"Don't worry, sweety," Cab smiled down at Penners. "I'm not giving up forever." She stretched and slid into a more comfortable position. "Just for today. How 'bout we take a nap?" She set her hand out for Penners who jumped onto it and ran up to Cab's shoulder where she nestled against Cab's bushy, red hair. Penners was able to fall asleep quite easily, but Cab just let her mind wander.

Nerezza the Gastly floated along on one of her personal constitutionals. She liked to go on her own once in a while to think about things in privacy and silence. Unfortunately, the silence was broken by a screeching Pidgey above Nerezza's head. Growling, she shouted to the Tiny Bird Pokemon, "Gastly! Gast-gastly!" "Hey! You certainly don't have to yell like that!" The Gastly frowned and shook her head. Really, of all the nerve that some Pokemon have... Thinking spiteful thoughts, the Pokemon continued on her way.
Out of the corner of her eye, Nerezza could see what she assumed to be a human with her Rattata. Although why was the Rattata such an odd color?... The Gastly shook her thoughts aside and decided that she could have a bit of fun with these two. Snickering quietly to herself, she quickly made herself intangible and moved into the tree that the human was sitting against. Trying to be as quiet as possible, Nerezza made herself invisible and moved herself right in front of the human's face. After a second or two, she became visible again. "GAST." "BOO."

In the meantime Cab's eyes had drifted shut, though she did tweak one eye open when she heard the distant shreek of a Pidgey. Or maybe it was Pidgeotto. She wasn't quite sure. She reached up to stroke Penners, sighed, and considered drifting back off to sleep.
"Wyaaa!" Cab's shoes scuffed the grass when she tried to scoot back but couldn't because of the tree. "Raaata!" Penners too was startled into a fully awakened state and did what she did best - attack! But without Cab's direction she simply flung herself through the air toward the ghost pokémon. She had no real attack in mind and didn't even consider whether or not the ghost was currently corporeal or just visible smoke.

The Gastly doubled over in laughter. The reaction from the two was so much better than she expected! The look on the human's face... priceless! Nerezza wiped away a tear with a tendril-like wisp of her gaseous body when she felt the Rattata plunge right through her. Sure, she was a ghost, and therefore Normal attacks couldn't hurt her, but she felt it all the same. "Gast! Gastly gast-gastly?!" "Ow! Geez, what was that for?!" Growling and attempting to ignore the Rattata, Nerezza returned her attention to the human.
As sweet as you like, she sidled right up to the human and gave her a big smile, being sure to display all of her sharp pointed teeth. "Gast gast.... Gastly gastly?" "So, did I scare you?" Giggling like a small school child that placed a tack on the teacher's chair, Nerezza gave the human a big paralyzing lick and floated backwards, still grinning. This day may be better then I hoped!

Cab wasn't sure if this pokémon was actually out for her, or just playing around. Sure, it had licked her, and now she felt a bit stiff, but likely it could have done more if it really had wanted to. She was internally berating herself for dropping her guard this far from town. Cab brought a sluggish hand to her cheek to rub at where the Gastly had licked her and waited.
Nothing.
"Well... I guess you could have done worse..." She still felt very jittery. Penners on the other hand...
"Ratttatttattta! Ra rata taaaa!" 'What's the big idea, you want someone sneaking up on you while you sleep!?' She was less than amused.

Nerezza waited impatiently for the human's response, and it was rather... lacking in her eyes. Maybe I should have done worse... It may have gotten a bigger reaction... Shaking away her thoughts, the Gastly floated around the human, inspecting her. Well, she doesn't look too bad... But her thoughts were interrupted by the annoying chirp of the light brown Rattata.
"Gastly gast-gast! Gastly gastly gast!" "Oh, shut it, half-pint! It was just a bit of fun!" She looked away, shaking her head and growling. Really... Of all the nerve! Nerezza turned back to the human once again. She seemed nice enough, but Nerezza wasn't exactly the trusting type. The Gastly then smiled without the teeth at the human. "Gastly, gast-gast gastly" "I swear, if I smell any funny business, you're going down."

Cab was beginning to sweat with the combined stress and fear. She tried to keep a friendly smile whenever the Ghastly looked at her, but those teeth were unnerving. And despite a small voice saying that now might not be the time, when Nerezza turned to address Penners, Cab slowly slid one hand into her bag and pulled out her camera. Before she could turn it on, she was faced again with the questionable Ghastly.
Penners, seeing her 'attack' had no affect and that the Ghastly wasn't swayed by words, felt for now all she could do was be supportive of Cab. She jumped onto Cab's knee - further startling the woman so that she almost screamed again - and gave her a gently pat. "Tata..." 'I'm sure it'll be alright..."
When Cab's heart stopped trying to break out of her chest she smiled to Penners and gave the Ghastly a wary look. "So.. out to make new friends?" she asked, apparently oblivious to what had happened between the two.

Nerezza's attitude took a turn for the better when she saw the fear in the human's eyes. Good, so the plan did work... She decided to at least be sort of friendly, and so she floated to the human's side. She gave a slightly less intimidating smile when she eyed the Rattata on the human's knee. Smirking, Nerezza stuck out her large tongue at it. "Gastly, gast-gast gastly." "So, what's with that grubby coat color you have?" The Pokemon grimaced and chided herself for being distracted by the Rattata and, once again, focused on the human.
Nerezza, however, was startled by the human's question to her. Had she not seen the two of them fighting? Rolling her eyes, she sidled right up to the human. "Gastly, gast-gast gastly. Gastly gastly gast." "Well, I suppose you could say that I'm making friends, but in reality I'm just going along my merry way." Nerezza didn't care that the human couldn't understand her. In fact, she couldn't care less. Just so long as she gets her point across. But out of the corner of her eye, the Gastly could see a small rectangle in the human's bag. What is that?...

Until Cab, no one had ever said a nice thing about her coloring, all those years Penners had thought she was somehow deficient. Somehow less than her vibranty lilac counterparts. But Cab made her feel special. She made her feel loved. And Penners was sure Cab would love her, tan coat or not. "Ra-ra-rata rataa ratatta!" 'There's nothing at all wrong with my coat, it's better than being purple!'
Cab gave a nervous chuckle, the Ghastly seemed to be a bit friendlier for now... but what did that mean? She reached a hand out to Penners, "It'll be OK. Don't worry, Pen-Pen." When she noticed the Ghastly's gaze she instinctively tried to scoot the camera behind her back, between herself and the tree. Heaven knew she'd never want her camera to come to harm.

Nerezza was a tad startled at the Rattata's sudden ferocious attitude. What's the matter with 'im? Although almost instantaneously, the Gastly could hear her Opal's chiding words in her memory. "Nezz, you shouldn't be so surprised when people bite back at you. After all, you do tend to frighten them out of their skins. They're bound to have some negative reaction." The Gastly shook her thoughts away. Her trainer was like a best friend, a mother, and a guidance counselor all rolled up into one. "Gastly, gastly gast-gast, gastly gast!" "Calm down, calm down. I merely thought it different than what I've usually seen. And purple is a lovely color, thank you."
As she was addressing the Rattata, out of the corner of her eye Nerezza could see the human push the bag with the mysterious rectangle in it behinf her. The Gastly lost all interest in the Rattata and floated over to the human. "Gastly gastly! Gast-gast gastly! Gast?" "Hey, hey! Don't take that away! What's in it anyway?" Curiosity getting the best of the Ghost Pokemon, she wedged herself between the tree and human and gently pulled the rectangle out of the bag.

Penners watched the Ghastly cautiously. She wasn't ready to trust so quickly, the Ghastly hadn't even properly apologized, but she had no retort.
"Ahh!" Cab was startled by the Ghastly's sudden interest in her, thinking perhaps it and Penners were still getting to know each other. "What? Nonono, don't go back there!" But in twisting to shoo the ghastly away, Cab exposed her whole bag and camera practically giving the device away. She thought about all the photos on it, sure there were no rare pokémon but a lot of the scenes were pretty. Quickly reacting, Cab's hand shot back into her bag and closed around a small, hard candy. Penners liked to sit and chew the little hard candies for ages strengthening her teeth on them. Maybe she could tempt her camera back with one?
"W-wouldn't you like a candy instead?" It was round, wrapped in clear plastic, and a bright red color. Cab tried not to place her palm too far out, she wanted to be able to hold onto the candy until she got her camera back. It wouldn't do for the Ghastly to scoop it up and keep the camera. "It's tasty!"
"Tata... ratata tatta ra..." 'Sure... steal the box get a reward. I'f I'd have known that...' Penners crossed her tiny arms and sniffed indignantly. She didn't know what the box was, but it was important to Cab! Why would she offer a reward for stealing it?

Nerezza carefully took the rectangle out of her mouth with a gaseous tendril and examined it. It didn't seem like the greatest thing in the world, and it had a little hole in it for whatever reason. But the Gastly was baffled at the human's reaction. Surely something so insignificant and small and utterly useless wouldn't be considered precious to the girl. But what really took the cake was that the human was holding out a candy to Nerezza for the return of the box. Nerezza was shocked, to say the least. "Gastly! Gast-gastly gast gast gastly!" "A simple candy? You've got to be joking! I mean sure, I like sweets and it is kind of tempting, but I need to know what this is! As if I could be bought for such a low price!"
The Gastly then turned to the Rattata. "Gastly? Gast gast-gastly gast?" "What? What do you know about it that makes it so special?" Nerezza shifted her gaze back on the rectangle and turned it over in her "hand." What was so special about this little box?

Penners gave a stiff shrug, still a bit miffed that she wasn't being offered a candy. "Ratatta rata ra-ratatta tatta rata. Rata-rata-tatta ratatta." 'She likes to hide her face behind it, sometimes for a really long time. I have to look at her, I donno, maybe to see it's working. It doesn't really hide all of her face.' Penners quirked an eyebrow at Cab and sniffed toward the candy. Maybe if she showed more interest... she'd get the candy?
But Cab wasn't detered yet. Maybe it doesn't understand... She used her other hand to point to the candy. "Yours..." she said slowly, then pointing to the camera, "...if you give me mine...". Ah yes, the folly of those who think talking slower will make everyone understand everything perfectly.

Nerezza floated a bit closer to the odd colored Rattata. "Gastly?... Gast-gast gast gastly gast gast gastly gastly gast-gast..." "Really?... That is odd, although I did see that the box had a hole in it that maybe your human sees through..." The Gastly raised an eyebrow at the Rattata, who looked like she was begging for candy. Nerezza rolled her eyes. "Gastly, gastly, gastly... Gast gast gastly gast gast? Gastly gast-gast gast." "Honey, honey, honey... Why are you begging for that? It doesn't even look tasty." This statement was a lie, of course, for Nerezza was, in a way, a sucker for sweets. The treat was indeed tempting, and the Gastly's mouth was almost watering. But she restrained herself.
Nerezza looked to the human and grimaced. Did this human think she was stupid or something? That she was a run-of-the-mill, country bumpkin, idiotic, wild Pokemon? What cheek! What nerve! All appetite gone, the Gastly rudely shot the candy away (coincidentally, in the Rattata's direction.) and pointed to the mystery box with a gaseous "hand." "Gastly. Gastly... gast... gastly?" "Okay. What... is this thing?..." Nerezza did her best to the way the human talked to her, just to show her how ridiculous she sounded... And also to unveil the mystery of the rectangle.

Zooom! Penners was on that candy before it hit the ground and Cab gave an annoyed sigh. "She'll be up all night now and that's your fault, I'll have you kn-know..." She remembered who, or rather what, she was talking to about midway through her short tirade and stammered to a stop. She watched, still worried the ghastly would drop her camera, but didn't quite connect her own slowed speech to the ghastly's.
Try as she might, Cab couldn't think of anything a ghastly might want or need. So she tried a different tactic. She reached into the bag and pulled out another candy, this one happened to be bright yellow. "Have a freebie then," she said, giving it a toss. She waited for it to be within her own perception of the ghastly's reach and then lunged forward. Maybe she'd just pass through the ghastly but still be able to get her camera. How strong of a grip could a barely corporeal being have anyway?
